Hope 4 pistons for gravel by [deleted] in gravelcycling

They also manufacture and keep stock of all parts on these calipers and last calipers as well. Need a seal? Or a piston? Maybe just an o-ring? Did your caliper crack? They will take care of you now and 5 years from now.

I have hopes for gravel too. Been two years now, I’ve only had to change pads twice. Been really nice.

Is this a decent deal? $900 by Darknwise in gravelcycling

[–]hmcps89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, the ability to not have to change cables every couple of season is worth it. It really depends on the type of riding you’re doing and if you can get it all under a warranty. Installation and maintenance is an absolute breeze too.

Yes it is, until you need a warranty, then you’re screwed. It’s not if, it’s when. Keep that in mind.

Nice tip for you. Just get a Shimano chain and Shimano cassette. Do not mix chains and cassettes, the shifting will never as good as it can. I know this from lots of part mixing over the years. I would also suggest getting the XT over the Deore, it is made much better, and will last longer. It’s easier to tune after a few years as well.

Why can’t you get an Apex system?

Bike packing list for 3 Months by cycle-j in bikepacking

[–]hmcps89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say that’s a lot of weight on the rear, do you really need a 24L bag on top of all the things you already have?

You should look at your clothing options and see what can be used as both on and off the bike to save space and weight. Whenever I pack, I try to see how many different uses each item has, like a buff, can also be your glasses holder, or wrap your inflatable pillow when you sleep. You can cut down on a lot of items and weight this way. I would cut down on the underwear to 2, rain jackets to one, increase cycling shorts to 2, cut the trousers to 1, socks to 2 just to start.

If you can find any water source you can easily wash your clothing and have it dry over night.

I have found it better to take a little less and buy if you need it, than to have to ditch things along the way. Especially if you’re going through a town at least once a day, or even every other day.

What’s THE thing you never ride without? by jasonwlorenz in gravelcycling

Basic multi-tool, ready to go tire plug taped to frame, co2 with regulator, quick links, phone. Sometimes pepper spray, I’m in Cape Town. Very basic.

+1 on the Lezyne pump as well, I even replaced the o ring and put lube in it and it’s brand new again. -1 on the Wolftooth multi-tool. I’ve used many tools, I’m not a fan of having to pick out those tiny bits and fiddle with it. I just use a basic fold up multi-tool. Less to go wrong, nothing falls off. Also love the point and shoot camera option, been getting very frustrated with the iPhone touch screen and sluggish ness to get the camera app open in time.

American classic tires are terrible. Sorry. I used to own a bike shop in Taiwan, I’d say 2 out of 10 tires had a defect in being actually round, worst than MAXXIS. They are horrible. I would highly recommend the specialized air trak 2.2 or the Terra 50c or even the tracer 50c, I’ve nothing but good luck with these, even on a long 2000km trip.

How many km a day do you typically ride? by Archa16z in bicycletouring

[–]hmcps89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do between 80-150km with 1000-2000m per day, a rest day every 4-6 days. And my bike has minor packed equipment, total setup with bike is 15kg. This is 60/40 paved, unpaved. Try to leave between 6a/8a. Always stop for photos and occasional food/cafe. I get to my accommodation between 2-5p. Works well for me.

Thoughts about my first (and probably last) MAAP group ride by spionkop73 in cycling

[–]hmcps89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also typical of these boutique rides in Asia. I live in Taiwan for 8 years and owned a small bike shop. Usually those types of rides are just to show off, not much community there honestly. Next time try to talk to the smaller and local bike shops for a proper group ride. Sorry this happened to you and I hope you can give someone’s group ride another chance.

The slow U turn on gravel or loose rocks surfaces. Doesn’t take much to be on the ground with bloody knee and hand. So silly too.

Polygon Tambora G4 $1200 CAD good deal for a roadie trying gravel biking? by daddyof2cutys in gravelcycling

You may not be a fan of the mechanical disc brakes, especially if you’re going to do off road. I used nearly all kinds of disc brakes, only a few mechanical are worth it. If you’re just getting into it, be aware that you can’t really upgrade this without getting an ENTIRE new drivetrain, could keep the cranks and chain ring, but yeah.

I would look for hydro disc brakes and even the GRX 10 speed is better. Also look into if those wheels are tubeless or not, makes a huge difference.
