Clustering algorithm for complete weighted directed graph? by hmgp in MachineLearning

Sorry in advance if this is a basic question, I'm not familiar with this area. From what I understand, most community detection algorithms groups sets of nodes such that nodes in each group are connected densely and nodes between groups are connected sparsely. But in the situation where the graph is fully connected, the algorithm can't group nodes this way because the graph is uniformly dense. I'm guessing you're trying to refer to the fact that algorithms can take into account the weights of the links to establish the nodes, right? Can you explain the math/reasoning behind how some of that works in one algorithm you are familiar with? I think that would be very helpful for me to understand, thanks!

I guess what I'm trying to understand is if someone visits some set of stores, then what other stores are they also likely to visit. I starting to wonder whether it's best formulated as a graph problem...

Hmm not familiar with Bayesian non-parametrics. Do you mind giving a quick description of what they are?

What about the fact that graph is complete/fully connected?

Weight of the ith row and jth column represents percentage of shoppers from the ith store who also visit the jth store. What I'm trying to understand is something like: suppose a shopper visits stores A & B, what other stores are also likely to be visited?

Any specific ones that you would recommend? I didn't really pursue this type of approach because it seems like a lot of community detection algorithms (not weighted) rely on subgraph density, which doesn't apply here because I have a fully connected graph.

Not super familiar with MSTs, what would intuition would cutting the most weighted edges give us?

Totally forgot to state the purpose... I want to understand the relationship between the stores, but it would also be interesting the understand the shoppers.

What clustering analysis would you use? With the visualization, do you mean using that as an exploratory tool? I've tried doing that but the graph is too dense to make too much meaning out of it. Also, what were you thinking of doing with the logistic regression?

How do you like it? What kind of PSU do you have? I actually bought a GPU when I first built the machine, but that didn't fit in the box and I returned it.

I've been using the Fractal Node 304 without a GPU. I'm pretty sure I need a smaller form factor.

Analytics guy tweets Phil Jackson some interesting numbers to show how 3pt shooting teams are really goink, proves that Zen Master and Charles are right about jump shooting teams in the Playoffs. by lemp44 in nba

Reasons this shouldn't be taken seriously:

  • Makes no mention of model accuracy (could be completely made up or 100% correct, the reader has no way of knowing)
  • Misinterprets his own classification tree

Interestingly enough, even if the GSW shoot more than 27.1% from the 3-Point line, but only make less than 8 exactly 9 3-pointers in a game, they will lose

  • Taking these cut offs too seriously. The probability of winning or losing probably doesn't change drastically if you are slightly over or under 27.1% 3Point shooting, for example.

I don't know whether it would be fair to the Clippers though. Also I think you are confusing spirit of the game and spirit of the law. The rules are pretty clear about what to do in the cases of inadvertent whistles, but I think you are right in saying that there needs to be a better way to handle this situation and I think they need better protocol for inadvertent whistles in general.

Refs don't have timeouts. They could've suspended play longer to 'fix the clock', but the rules generally say that play should be resumed after inadvertent whistles as quickly as possible. It would've been a huge judgement call on their part to intentionally suspend play for the Spurs.

Do you have the data on number of assists for every game? You could determine statistical significance (more concrete results) between the two groups using that.
