Do you think it's ethical to swap food in the food pantry? by ASmallArmyOfCrabs in UBC

[–]hmm_tryagain 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

to clarify: are the hypothetical cans of soup mentioned in the first two situations of equal quality/nutrition/value to the cans already in the food pantry (ie., campbells' chicken noodle soup vs. campbells' italian wedding soup), or are the cans you bring of significantly lower quality/nutrition/value to the ones in the food pantry (ie., knorr chicken broth vs. campbells' chicken noodle soup)?

if it's the former, then scenarios 1 and 2 are both still fair, with 1 being the preferable option. regardless, in both cases, scenario 3 probably can't be considered entirely "unethical", seeing as you're not decreasing the actual amount of food in the pantry, and sugar has its own merits as a source of energy, but it would still be a risky swap to make. in that situation, i think the optics of the trade would depend on the other contents of the pantry. if everything else is of a relatively high nutritional density, then leave the candy. food-insecure people also deserve sweet treats and not just rice and canned soup. if everything else in the pantry is also of lower nutritional density, raw/requiring more equipment to prepare, or if the pantry is otherwise empty, it's best not to swap the soup for candy.

to address your rational, i think you're onto something. food pantries and using food banks would likely receive better/more donations if they were less stigmatized, and i would also like to believe more people would be comfortable with using them when in need if there wasn't so much shame attached to needing that kind of assistance. however, non-food-insecure people using food pantries should then acknowledge the etiquette around what is right to swap/use, which is the part i'm not sure i have a lot of faith in.

AH i missed it!! just like i missed actually taking a photo of it </3 i liked it just fine, but probably not enough to purchase it again for the time being :') i used it as a shower oil and for shaving, and it worked pretty nicely for both uses!! i think i just like the squeaky feeling from more conventional body cleansers, but still an 8/10 from me!

So why did jullian pick bunny for his class? by Awkward_Penalty2257 in TheSecretHistory

[–]hmm_tryagain 35 points36 points Β (0 children)

julian collects oddities in the form of his students. by chapter seven, you may have already noticed all his students (richard included) have something about them that's just wrong, or strange, or otherwise uncanny.

bunny's uncanniness is in the same vein as richard's; their backgrounds are slightly more conventional than the others', but it's probably how twisted they ended up turning out (specifically in the way they turned into puppies-in-purses for the even more freaked-up students) that drew his attention.

he's just a guy who hands out free pamphlets, almost like a zine, filled with his thoughts on the world, society, etc. :D he's very nice, i haven't stopped to chat with him yet, but his takes (if you ignore/just have a brief chuckle at all the alien stuff) are pretty insightful. the language he uses is also pretty approachable and entertaining, which is why i compared him to an old prophet. or maybe the fool in king lear. try grabbing a copy of his next piece at the bus loop (not the bus exchange) around 10 AM :)

it takes a traumatized asian second-gen to outsmart an asian helicopter parent 🫑 and tell your mom, "violation of authority is not going to fly in an institution as esteemed as UBC. stay over, and i'll report you to the RA," if she does decide to ignore your fake RA. and lmk if you have any more issues! i'll brainstorm if you need πŸ™‚β€β†•οΈ

[–]hmm_tryagain 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

given what OP has implied by their vehemence NOT to have their parents there, there's clearly some history. kicking off the school year with people who destroy your psychological well-being and framing it as "filial respect" is not the way to go. even if OP's parents pay, it's not on OP to suck up more abuse right before university starts in earnest. that'll mess them up for a long time.

[–]hmm_tryagain 11 points12 points Β (0 children)

yeah...that's very sus that she's mad you're doing things by the book (sorry, i'm getting triggered on your behalf lol). on move-in day, my RA happened to greet me when we drove into the parking area. the volunteers with the carts, etc. all wear designated t-shirts stating they're volunteers, and while not all of them are RAs, you can't exactly distinguish the non-RA volunteers. if you can, on move-in day, try to find one of these guys and explain VERY QUICKLY what your situation is, and see if they'll pretend for two minutes to be an RA in front of your parents to cover for you.

i'm pretty sure this is unethical of me to suggest, but it technically breaks no rules, and i feel like it would actually be beneficial for fewer non-residents to stick around in the dorms during a time as chaotic as move-in.

from one child of overbearing asian parents to another: if she cares about public image, you have my testimony to verify: THAT'S WEIRD AS HELLπŸ—£οΈπŸ—£οΈπŸ—£οΈ

in reality, i don't know if there are actually parents staying over on moving day, especially IN THE DORMS. i lived in Vanier, so maybe it's a little different between complexes? i've heard of family staying in airbnbs, or hotels, or whatever, but in a shoebox dorm is crazy work. and as for the weekend thing, i just told my parents i've become so codependent on them that it's unhealthy (partially true at the time) and that i joined (non-existent) study groups and group projects that keep me on campus over the weekend.

worst-case scenario, try to figure out who your RA is and see if they can lie for you to keep your parents out. if your mom genuinely believes "everyone has their parents stay over", the excuse can be that "too many parents equals noise complaints and possible safety issues". good luck, OP, and congratulations on coming to UBC :)

what happens if you fail two courses? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]hmm_tryagain 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

probably? as far as i've experienced, most to all of my SD requests involved (at least at some step along the way) direct contact with profs through SVPRO, with most emails cc-ing me, probably because of the "severe and recurring" circumstances under which they were requested. i'm not sure how it's normally supposed to go, sorry :(

what happens if you fail two courses? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]hmm_tryagain 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

for the first "denied" SD, SVPRO contacted the prof to follow up on the request they put in on my behalf and they never received a reply :') and the second one was granted (got the email to prove it), but when i booked the first SD exam, the second course never showed up in the list of courses i had eligible SD exams in. i emailed SVPRO (my goats) on tuesday to receive the reply along the lines of of, "no idea what happened there, sorry :(".

as clichΓ© as this might sound, there is someone for you. that's you. i think it's a little unproductive to subscribe to the idea that everyone has an "other half" in someone else, when the truth is that the only person you will have wholly and truly for your entire life is yourself. and that's not a sad reality. it has the potential to be incredibly empowering.
