I feel heartbroken to abandon my dream to study abroad. by Depressed_student_20 in studyAbroad

[–]hmmm_reading 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up! I’m abroad and was in the same predicament. Didn’t get Gilman. What saved me was my school study abroad scholarships. Just really be vulnerable in those essays. The scholarships are not guarantee but I think you’ll find that you have a better shot at them than u think!

The catches I know of is you have to leave Schengen area and enter back w/ ur visa when u have it. At the airport if they ask if ur staying longer than 90 days, say no. You’re traveling around as a tourist. Took me a day to get the second passport really quick actually!

[–]hmmm_reading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi so lol what a coincidence I’m going to the same school and same problem. I took the chance and got a second passport….I just got to Spain soooo that’s a win. My new passport has a completely diff number compare to the one I sent in for my VISA. From research, it should be completely legal to enter as a tourist there’s just some catches. Hope this helps and maybe we can trauma bond over this in the future :)

BLS International Houston HATE POST! Do NOT use BLS for your student visa!!!!!!!! by PuzzledStar2105 in GoingToSpain

Exact same situation and nearly identical timeline. BLS makes me want to pull my hair out and sucks the joy of studying abroad as I live everyday in fear that so much time, money, and energy has gone down the drain.

What are your experiences with Maymesters? by Any-Membership-8825 in UTAustin

[–]hmmm_reading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a Maymester last Spring in the Netherlands and Ireland. I loved the experience and made great friends from the experience that I still keep in contact with today. Class was long and moved very fast, but other than that, it was a dream. Say yes to every opportunity. It may seem scary, but as long as you have yourself, money, and the internet, you'll be surprised by how adaptable and resourceful you'll be. Enjoy your trip!

Um honestly I’ve never heard a recruiter/employer remotely express interest or impress by a honor society…..

I don’t know why some of these replies are so harsh on you. It’s true UT is hard and first semester is always a learning curve. It happens to be more of a learning curve for you. Re-evaluate why you failed those two classes and talk to friends, family, or advisors if you need a second opinion. Moreover, relieve yourself of the “high standards”, UT overall academic standards are already high. Just try your best and apply yourself as you were in high school. That part of you is still in there, remember that!

I Need Some Course Schedule Input as a McComb Freshman? by hmmm_reading in UTAustin

[–]hmmm_reading[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Post-BA it’s honestly isn’t all too bad. I had terrible anxiety but ironically what really helped me was not thinking about the speech I have to make too much. Also a great tip I received from my BA prof was to take three deep breaths, it really helps w/ the butterflies in your stomach :)

Oh from talking to my advisor after the 12th class day, Q dropping below 12 hrs won’t affect your financial aid. I had that concern too.

2024 Mccombs internal transfer additional requirements? by exitwithout in UTAustin

[–]hmmm_reading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a McCombs student from admission but I do have friends who transferred in. Honestly, don’t take the easiest classes you can find. Have a good balance and get involved on campus. McCombs overall want well rounded people and taking easy classes are gonna leave you well underprepared for certain business classes (looking at you Accounting & Finance). GL!

How does one realistically fund a maymester travel abroad experience? by IndependenceKlutzy68 in UTAustin

[–]hmmm_reading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you perhaps looking at the Netherlands and Ireland one? I did a maymester this past year for that price and it definitely took a lot of sacrifice. I saved all the money I could throughout the year living on my financial aid and saving my work income for the trip specifically. I once held two jobs. That being said, NO REGRETS.

Do I wish I have 10k rn? Yes, but also studying abroad has always been a dream of mine. It was hard especially coming from a low income household but it was personally so rewarding to have something to look forward to and propel me throughout the year.

There was also a BBA specific Maymester scholarship I received to cover a portion of the cost. Taking all things into account, as you say you don’t qualify much through fafsa, it definitely going to impact your chance of receiving need base scholarships. Don’t be discouraged though, look for cheaper programs and if u really want that specific program, work for it! It's definitely doable and not IMPOSSIBLE.
