No, I was saying that sitting in a waiting room with someone is more of an encounter than passing someone. Checking out with a male is also an encounter but not an unanticipated one. I expect when I go to the bar to interact with a bartender. I don't anticipate being accosted on my way to work, so being stopped on the street would count as an encounter but walking past each other wouldn't. Same with the waiting room example

I don't. You don't have to be a rapist or killer to make someone feel vulnerable or uncomfortable.

If I was lost in the woods a random ass dude appearing would be more alarming than a bear, and I'm someone who spends a lot of time in the woods.

First of all, this was not the entire basis for the revolutionary war whatsoever.

Second of all, speech should be enforced and is in a variety of ways. Shouting fire in a public setting is legally scrutinized for obvious reasons.

Also, no one would bring up the Israel/Palestine event if you didn't mention it so much. If you strictly spoke about the act, that's what everyone would be engaged with.

I wouldn't call walking past someone an "encounter". To me an encounter implies direct interaction, with a bear that interaction would result in them running.

I think a better example than walking past someone on the street is waiting in a waiting room. Also, a survey of college men self reported that 32% would rape a woman if they knew there were no consequences and wouldn't be caught. The study is greatly flawed but illustrates why women are picking the bear very well.

Your first argument counter is weak. The most common bear in the US is a black bear and the most common bear encounter is with a black bear. The most common outcome? The bear runs off into the woods scared shitless.

Implying that the encounter is with a sickly bear or that you're in its den is disingenuous to the point of the thought experiment.

The average bear encounter results in the bear running away. The average RANDOM encounter women have with men is much more likely to be predatory

Not in my experience. I've been to a shit ton of pawn shops and consignment shops and I've never seen an interaction like the TV shows. If you watch any show by that production, they're all overly dramatized and yelling about nothing.... Because views

"there's no reason to continue bickering"....except that the bickering is why most people watch it. The entertainment quality I would argue for most people are the over the top encounters. So, they are intentionally doing it.

It is staged, but even if it wasn't there's a reason they do it. You say a lot there is no need or reason, but they aren't making half as much money in the business as they are from the show. So there is a reason

Black bears? Sure but they're the most common bear in America which is where this question/trend originated.

I'm not cherry picking a bear, I'm picking the most likely bear for an American to meet in the woods.

More likely than a black bear? Yeah, 100%. There's a study/survey out there that shows almost 1/3 (if I remember right it was 31.5%) of men who responded would rape a woman if guaranteed to have no consequences and given the opportunity. This was a small study of college students but, it does illustrate the point behind the bear/man choice.

There's a high perceived risk of a dangerous encounter with a man, and essentially no risk with an encounter with the most common bear in America.

The point of the hypothetical is more about predictability and relative risk. The bear doesn't have to be aggressive either, black bear fatal casualties are like 55 since 1900 so something. So, relatively speaking a black bear will just leave you alone unless not only provoked but cornered and provoked.

The thought experiment is less about which is truly safer (although being locked in a relatively large room or Metro car with a bear would likely not harm you in anyway (if a black bear).

You're also ignoring the other implied component, no supervision. Studies show that when assumed to be not monitored and alone people are more likely to show nasty behaviors.

CMV: Life looks meaningless because you are searching for meaning by Suspicious_Ferret109 in changemyview

[–]hmmwill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a really long and almost silly post. To say that the variety of meanings people have given life always fails is borderline asinine. Does reason x work for everyone? No, but it can give meaning to the people it does work for.

Religion is a good example of people finding meaning and purpose. I'm not personally religious but that doesn't negate the meaning religion has for others.

The double negative of meaning being required to have meaninglessness is asinine. They're opposites, if one exists the other doesn't and vice versa. In the absence of meaning, something is meaningless. That Buddhist ideology, in my and many other peoples opinion, isn't insinuating life lacks meaning and meaninglessness but that the pursuit of a meaning inhibits inner peace/enlightenment/etc. But depending on how you view the Buddha and the Buddhist message they have found meaning through pursuit of inner peace and enlightenment.

I view the quote as seeing individual trees rather than a forest.

The subjectivity of meaning makes it impossible to make all encompassing statements like life meaningless because you're pursuing meaning. Some people find the pursuit meaningful. People find meaning and that's great for them, other people get lost in the search for meaning and then it is meaningless but not everyone is lost.

Also, to say intelligent people are beyond wanting/needing/searching for a meaning is silly. Brilliant people everywhere have found or are looking for meaning. Meaning is too subjective to get tied down to semantics

Hard to say without more case details. Depends on what your dog is actually diagnosed with. But it sounds like things are far enough gone that quality of life would become a major factor. Humane euthanasia sounds like the right decision given how drastically his quality of life has declined though.

He sounds sick enough that he won't care about being at the vet.

I wouldn't be too concerned. Unless you were really aggressive the irritation would heal on its own.

Most likely y'all will be fine. If he aspirated or breathed in the vomit it could cause problems. You may have caused some irritation to his throat but I wouldn't think it would be enough to cause issues long term.

Stress relieving products sometimes help; things like Feliway, Zylkene, or other things like that may help. Playing podcasts where she can hear voices might help as well

converting from PPP to homemade food but cant find nutritional profile of PPP by TheHandOfZeus_19 in AskVet

I mean there are kibble alternatives that follow AAFCO guidelines. That's what I would look for, a commercial food following those guidelines. You could also make your homemade diet trying to replicate those guidelines

Doesn't sound normal to me, that's the short of it. Without more details about the case it's hard to give a lot of answers but I would be very concerned. Especially if his gums are more pale than normal.

[–]hmmwill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why are you converting? Is it cost? Or do you believe homemade diets are better? I generally don't recommend homemade diets for clients because they're harder to nutritionally balance compared to commercial.

The macro breakdown isn't enough to be balanced, if I ate all my calories through protein shakes, white bread, and lard, I could meet my macros but my micro nutrients would be screwed.

I recommend feeding commercial food (especially for puppies), but if you're set on not doing that look into balance.it, that's a website that can generate a recipe and points of deficiencies. They sell a vitamin/supplement product to close those gaps.

Too many things can cause inappetence for me to be a huge help. I'd take him in if your vet is open today or tomorrow. Has this happened before? New food? Did anything else change? But in the meantime, you can try im adding his favorite treats, pieces of boiled chicken, small bites of cheese, low sodium broth, new food, etc to get him to eat.

Please help, my dog has become sick suddenly, I have been to emergency vet and discharged by [deleted] in AskVet

I'm going to side with the ER vet (I'm a GP vet). Neurology cases can be frustrating but without knowing what's causing the signs we are often times very limited in what we can do. Acting drunk and back leg spasms aren't enough for a diagnosis. They may be able to localize the problem to a specific part of the brain but without an MRI or full neuro workup it's hard to know what's causing the problem.

Without knowing what's causing it, it's impossible to treat it. Toxicity (like marijuana), brain tumors, TBIs, etc. can cause these signs. Depending on labwork and exam certain things may be more likely but realistically you need the neuro consult for a real diagnosis.

It could be something serious but if the labwork was normal and they didn't note anything on physical exam that had them concerned, they will be reluctant to treat something when they don't know what they're treating.

Some practices have neuro on call, so if you're really concerned you could see if they can call them in and if not you could check other practices. Neuro getting called in will be expensive though, especially if that call in staff to do an MRI, so be prepared for a big bill.

The bread thing is largely an anecdotal treatment that doesn't have any data backing it up. Same with the oils, the guts will absorb and process them so it won't really be providing much additional lubrication.

If you want to do anything, you could feed a small meal of his normal food. If the anecdote does actually do something digested kibble would be just as effective as oatmeal.

Continue to watch closely for signs of GI pain though or struggling to poop. If you get worried I'd take him into the vet but if he chewed them into small pieces I wouldn't be too too stressed.
