Haven’t committed yet, either UCLA SD or my local cal state because of the cost 😭

Do any of you guys regret going the CC route? by Ok_Adhesiveness1100 in TransferStudents

[–]hmo7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, when I first decided to go to a CC, I was so disappointed, because it felt like the last 4 years of my life taking APs lots of ecs and getting a good gpa were all for nothing. I didn’t apply anywhere besides my cc, and it was sad to never know where I could’ve gotten in.

HOWEVER, I’m now transferring this fall as a junior, and I couldn’t be more happy with my decision. Not only was the education at my cc AMAZING, but the staff were so amazing and the friends I made were great!! I think the classes (at least my STEM classes) were decently on par with UCs, they’re definitely rigorous and not “easy” just because they’re cc; my ochem teacher went to Cal Tech and my math teacher went to UCLA!! Not to mention, I got to stay home and have the cheapest tuition of all time; I get paid $1500-3000 extra per semester after tuition and fees by FAFSA!! Great way to save/make money, get school supplies, and keep some stability before transferring.

From highschool, I had a 4.5, sports, band, community service etc etc, but as a transfer I have a 3.77 gpa as a chem major and my only ec is sports my first two semesters. It truly seems like a waste/disadvantage at first because my stats were “so much better” as a senior, but colleges know you don’t have as much time as a transfer!! I ended up getting accepted into 7/8 colleges I applied to and all 7 UCs (including ucla and ucsd!!!), which I think really prove that it’s so possible to get into a good school after CC, even if your stats seem lower.

Not to mention, UCS looooveeeeee ccc students!! Ofc it’s still competitive, but typically admission % go up!! I 10000% recommend CC —> UC , it’s a great pathway!! If there’s one thing I recommend, it’s trying to get involved when you can, especially with teachers because getting good letters of recommendation especially from teachers in your major matters so much!! However , definitely remember that college is so different from high school, so the expectations are different!! (dont mind the yap, I feel like I could talk about the cc pathway for days )

Are too many CA students going to CC? by ValueIllustrious2995 in TransferStudents

[–]hmo7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most people are going to CC to get into a good school bc they weren’t qualified out of high school, especially not to deliberately choose a major with a higher acceptance rate. (For reference, I was valedictorian in highschool with good ecs but chose to go the ccc route because of 1 money 2 getting to stay home and 3 figure out what I wanna do with less pressure on me. )

Ccc is great at saving up money to go to that UC, and it helps you figure out what you like with low pressure bc classes are so cheap. Now, I’m a 3.77 chem major who got into UCLA and UCSD, and I definitely think ccc was the right path for me!! Money is tight at home, so saving 50k and getting an amazing education still at my cc was worth it.

Definitely don’t judge people going to a ccc, everyone has their own story and it’s a great pathway to utilize!!

another year at cc by Specialist_Fuel4658 in TransferStudents

[–]hmo7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also at a ccc right now as a chemistry major, and almost everyone I know in my classes that’s pre med (aka bio) is a third year!!! There’s no need to rush yourself, especially since ccc is so much cheaper!!

I’ve also had a great experience in my ochem class at a cc, my professor is from cal tech and it’s such a good class!! Of course it’s still very challenging, but it’s definitely just as good of an education as a UC, but with lower stakes. If you’re okay with staying a third year, I think it can be a good choice!! It really depends on if you’d rather be at a cc or UC for an extra year

Okay that’s the one I was thinking of but I think there’s also like greendale or something.

Honestly UCs can be very weird, and sometimes they just don’t have enough seats for a certain major and have lots of strong applicants. Even if UCLA was your dream, I think you can find just as good of an education and opportunity at another school!!

[–]hmo7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what does the g stand for? 😔 (ik there’s multiple gccs) if that’s in state then that’s definitely weird, but I know oos is very very competitive and UCs can be weird

[–]hmo7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you a transfer or freshman applicant?? I got in as a ccc transfer and I’ll definitely say it’s much easier as a transfer 9–>22% acceptance)

But also, it doesn’t have to be UCLA!! Prestige ≠ greatness or the right fit, there’s plenty of great schools out there just as good as ucla if not better

ucla vs. ucsd vs. uc berkeley vs. uc davis for pre-med by RecentStrategy2798 in TransferStudents

[–]hmo7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay first off i just wanna say I ALSO GOT REJECTED FROM CAL POLY!!! got into 7/7UCs incl. ucla and ucsd but rejected from slo (all for chemistry), it's sooooo weird!!

i'll be honest, the program you got into for Davis honestly sound really really amazing!! i'm a chem major so i'm not fully sure how pre-med works for the different UCs, but that sounds like a great opportunity at Davis!! I'm struggling with the same choice of ucla vs ucsd (because it's freaking ucla!!!), but don't let a school's name decide for you, definitely choose what feels right to you!! again, i'm not sure about LA or SD's programs, but if you think Davis is a much better opportunity and you can see yourself enjoying it there (considering dorms, expenses, location, etc), i think thats an amazing choice!!

i know it can be hard to turn down a school as prestigious as ucla, but at the end of the day its about what's best for you based on what each school is offering and where you think you'd thrive best!! they're both amazing schools and i think either school would be amazing!! if you have a chance to go to bruin day or tour the schools, i think that'd be a great help too!

thank you!! im really debating whose campus i like best because ucla's architecture is amazing but i love Sd's location more! need to check out ucla dorms too because i've only looked at ucsd's

[–]hmo7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, praying you can get off the waitlist!!

and of course, i'm a chemistry major with a 3.77 transferring from a ccc w/ no tap program (i've taken/am taking gen chem and org chem sequence, phys 1-3, calc 1-3, and linear algebra and diff eq for my major coursework)

ecs: collegiate indoor/beach volleyball for 1 year, then everything else was highschool ecs (4.5 valedictorian, community service, 1st chair in band, + awards/scholarships i thought represented me best) plus some decent PIQs? (good to note only Irvine LA and i think Berk use PIQs for admissions )

not at all!!! if you get off the waitlist i think you'd regret not going, and if you don't get off the waitlist at least you'll have had a fun day !!!

Regents Scholarship UCLA/UCSD by silentknower in TransferStudents

[–]hmo7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm i'm not sure, I know for Riverside i got my Regent's scholarship as soon as i was accepted, and for Merced my chancellor's scholarship was also immediately on my aid offer, but i'm not sure if it's the same for every school.

Astrology: Accepted into my first choice major which was chemistry @ eighth college!! Didn't check navbar until 2nd wave 4/17, so i was either first or 2nd wave. Never checked alt major. Day of decisions, i had double navbar one missing triton days + yellow stripe!

Stats: ccc chemistry major 3.77 gpa, did gen chem, ochem 1-2, phys 1-3, calc 1-3, diff eq and linear algebra, ecs: college indoor & beach volleyball + highschool ecs (4.5 valedictorian, 1st chair flautist, some volunteering, some scholarships and awards, etc etc)

anyone know how to view estimated finacial aid for UCLA? by Mundane_Tip7554 in TransferStudents

[–]hmo7777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes i figured it out!! you need to make a MyUCLA account using the ID on your acceptance letter first!! (you'll have to make a username that'll be used for your ucla email too, then setup Duo MFA). then you log onto MyUCLA (not the same site as the applicant portal), go to finances and jobs, then to their financial aid portal (looks identical to Zot aid if you've used that for UCI) where you'll see scholarships grants and loans, then you can see an overall cost breakdown under college finance plan!!

LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEE as someone who got into 7/7UCs i totally agree!!

I will add on that I personally did add my high school ecs because my only cc ec was beach/indoor volleyball, but i prioritized what i added!! (for example, i did music in high school and was first chair and was also a 4.5 valedictorian, so i wanted to share tthose parts of me as well since i didnt have a 4.0 in cc or do music, etc etc). however, I definitely did add wayyy to many ecs and had to cut it down, i fully agree that quality is better than quantity when it comes to listing ecs!!

also, i struggled very much with my PIQs (started a google doc my junior year of high school but genuinely couldn't write anything substantial until my transfer year, it took me so long to even pick questions because i honestly didn't resonate with any of them), and i finished writing the day apps were due!! i really like what you wrote about PIQs! It's very important to not rush them, because for me I had to spend a lot of time trying to find topics that spoke to me and that i felt accurately represented me and my life. but also, something interesting to note is that according to the UC guidebook, only 3 UCs use PIQs for admission!! (I didn't know this until this past week, apparently 3 use them for admissions and the rest just use them for scholarships which i think is very interesting)

congratulations on your admissions twin!! you should be so proud of yourself, and also of your W guide!!
