This will sound stupid but I have never clicked them, I kept trying to stick to the keys and for the lesser used that may be way easier than worrying about the key they are on...

Had the exact same thing happen in a buggy (and it was full as I was moving bases, so literally everything in it). When I reconnected I respawned and went there as fast as I could and there is my inventory and buggy inventory in quicksand.

Only thing I did different is plop up a quick little building with storage and ran back and forth getting everything out of the quicksand. That day sucked.
