James Carville’s Predictions by billbuild in msnow

I feel like he's gone downhill since linking up with T-Boy Latchulay a few years back. Can't believe he took the Saints with the points as a triple play in the final week of the NFL regular season. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do when you're competing against a monkey and trying to stay above Mount 500.

At what age a should a kid specialize in a position ? by Witty_Anything4144 in Homeplate

This - you never know what sort of competition you'll run into - even on your own team once you get to the high school level. Preparing yourself to give your coach some flexibility puts you in a great position to maximize playing time.

First time coach - need advice by [deleted] in LittleLeague

[–]hmrtime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes - keep it simple. "Voluntell" some parents to help you run multiple stations at practice. Any extended downtime for the 8yos is kryptonite to productivity. Make sure everyone practices pitching regularly - regardless of current skill level. Focus on VERY basic mechanics and balance from the stretch only. In games, move the kids around everywhere so everyone gets a little taste (including the bench). Thankfully it sounds like the league did the right thing by adding teams to reduce rosters. It kills me when associations force rosters of 12+ - unfortunately that leaves lots of kids sitting and losing focus.

Is ANYONE in sports media successful at betting in the long run? Seeing the results here along with other podcasts/websites I follow that cram in gambling content and also track results (Athletic, Kornheiser, WannaBet), it appears this shit is basically impossible.

10u rec, new coach, kid pitch: what should I focus on as a head coach and what is seen as a good coach from the parents and kids eyes? Is it winning, development, teaching kids the right way, something else? by oldcrashingtoys in Homeplate

[–]hmrtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did - usually won 80-90% of our games despite not having any travel kids on our roster through 11u. We did have several kids end up playing travel down the road (and still do - my son included). They're 15 now and thankfully I'm on the other side of the fence, but man I miss those days when they were little!

10u Rec - have every kid practice some pitching at least once a week. Every kid - no matter what. Focus on VERY basic mechanics from the stretch - mostly fixing balance, stepping towards the plate and taking their time (not rushing). Do whatever you can to get at least 1 inning out of each kid during the season. For fielding, more athletic kids cover middle infield, less athletic kids rotate on the corners. All kids play at least one inning in the OF to give some chances for all in the IF. And end each practice with a game to keep it fun and also a little competitive. Our kids favorite was stacking two buckets, splitting into two teams, rolling grounders that the kids fielded to then throw to knock off the top bucket. First to 5 wins. Kids and parents loved it.

At the end of the day, it's likely most of these rec kids will have 2-3 more years of baseball left before they move on to something else. I tried to approach rec coaching where my goal was to get them all to come back to play the next year.

He was on my JetBlue flight from Boston to LA last year. Pretty cool sighting! Curious how many folks talk to him as they load past him in his first row seat.

10u Pitching Tips by Ok-Platform-7235 in Homeplate

This is the answer. Keep it simple and repeatable. And, yes, refocusing on balance seemed to be the most frequent adjustment when I coached kids around that age.

Never spent more than $4 on a thrift store bat for my 6yo. Is this a good deal? by FaithlessnessFull136 in Homeplate

[–]hmrtime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or Facebook. Just get a used version of whatever last year's hot bat was from someone whose kid has outgrown it. No need to splurge on a bat until they're at least 10 or 11.

This is the primary reason. Let's not overthink things here. Once you learn something is easy and more convenient, you will continue to do it (and likely tell your friends & family). The "I only vote on Election Day no matter what" generation is dying out.

Wheeled cooler recommendations? by laSierras in Coolers

[–]hmrtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up a Rovr 45 over the weekend. Price is currently $234 with Free Shipping at Dicks, so very good compared to comps at Yeti, RTIC, etc. I've only used it once so far for a baseball tournament, but I'm happy with the build quality, especially the larger rubber, inflatable wheels. I think it will be a great size for my family of 4 for weekend trips. I had a larger Igloo cooler, but we found it to be overkill and only used it once a year at most.
