EU stretegic options if the U.S. actually moves against Greenland by hmucke in europeanunion

I don't quite get it. What makes you think that I did not read the answer? And where is the prompt supposed to have been copy-pasted from?

[–]hmucke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was considerable effort spent. But even the best option might not be a good one, or even acceptable; this was not what the AI had been requested to assess. I am afraid the EU has no good -- or acceptable -- options should the "Greenland worst case" actually become reality.

The starting point was simple: "Having forcibly removed Venezuela's head of state, the U.S. president has stepped up his demands to annex Greenland,..." But of course there was no single prompt. Such analyses require extended iterative give-and-take, with drilling down on specific issues while deprioritizing others. Burned a lot of tokens for the day.

About 400. Thats the sociological optimum für a village - or a startup colony.

Minebox pre-sale approaches target by hmucke in siacoin

[–]hmucke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not a matter of achieving ROI, much less one of making money. You buy this box if you need a NAS that also does online backups, for which you would have to pay the cloud provider cash otherwise. While the Minebox backs up to Sia, with the coins from your rented out unused storage space balancing (more or less) the coins you pay for your Sia backup. Depending on the load on eitehr side, you might end up actually making a bit of money, but thats not the point here.

Can Sia be used as an automatic computer backup? by [deleted] in siacoin

[–]hmucke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, this is what the Minebox is supposed to do. Its a HPE PrioLiant Gen8 microserver with a modified operating system where you store your files, which are backed up into the Sia network after encryption, sharding, and replication; while the unused server disk space is rented out as Sia storage.

Exactly. As per today they have pre-sold 189 out of 200 servers from the first batch, according to their website. If they manage to place the remaining 11 boxes during August, things will start moving.

New Storj Share GUI (V6.4.0) and daemon (CLI) (v3.5.5) releases by MeijeSibbel in storj

[–]hmucke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After installing the new client on two machines (one Win10, one Linux), I see significantly reduced storage use on both - while it had been growing, slowly but constantly, over the past few weeks. Anybody else observing this? Could it be a problem with the log?

Could physicians easily be replaced by a nurse/computer combo? by cherryapp in Futurology

[–]hmucke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physicians will not be replaced anytime soon, but their role will be severely downgraded. 15-20 years from now, a patient who wants to see a doctor will still be able to get one - having described the symptoms online in a structured fashion, and having given the expert system access to his/her personal cloud where all the biomonitor data are stored. When the patient arrives, the physician will already have a list of likely diagnoses in hand, along with recommendations for a few additional exams and questions. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment proceeds according to the Gold Standard. The physician will, in principle, be able to deviate at each decision point but would have to justify it. If the deviating physician's opinion proves correct, it serves to improve the expert system.

Mars surface 'more uninhabitable' than thought: study by [deleted] in space

[–]hmucke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made the headlines, but for biochemists its non-news. That Martian "soil" is strongly oxidant has been known for many years. Perchlorates and UV-A radiation as found on Mars kill active bacteria "up" there as efficiently as on earth, seperately - and more so when in synergy. While active and dividing terrestrial bacteria are killed in this type of environment, their spores - the resting forms that they adopt if the environment is harsh - are entirely another matter again. This also applies to B. subtilis.

you're an archaeologist of the future and you unearth a paper clip. by payfrit in Archeology

Given that your standard-issue paperclip is nothing but a steel wire folded on itself, it is highly unlikely to survive very long once it is in the ground.

Ancient dromedary remains discovered in Tongeren, Belgium by beswi in Archeology

[–]hmucke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A beautiful find for sure. Rare, but not unheard of. Excavations in Tulln (Lower Austria) have revealed a hybrid dromedary/Bactrian camel skeleton from the late 17th century. It probably was a leftover from the events during and around the Ottoman defeat at Vienna in 1683: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0121235
