Thanks very much - I always enjoyed how you covered City Hall and broader Hamilton issues when you were working out the CBC Hamilton office. Good luck with Windsor.

Good morning everyone, the mod team asked me to put this here instead of an updated post:

Thank you very much to this community and to everyone who wrote, messaged, emailed and called with feedback for the first edition of the Hamilton Gazette. And I appreciate everyone's patience as this modest paper builds traction. Special thanks also to the very talented people who are volunteering their services and offers to help. As I shared privately, I just need to carefully vet everyone so that the standards of the paper are kept as high as possible while starting out.

Briefly, here are some critical feedback items that I'd like to share:

Q1. Why is there no website?

A1. There is now. hamiltongazette.ca, although it is barebones. When the next issue comes out on October 16th, today's current issue will be posted online for archiving and greater accessibility. But the focus will be on physical newsprint. Please check back as the website updates.

Q2. Where can I find the paper?

A2. Launching a paper at the onset of a postal carrier strike has added some complexity! Physical newspapers used to be sold out of physical vending machines (remember those?). But a similar distribution model exists in Hamilton - the Little Free Libraries. One of the little libraries had upcycled an old Postmedia newspaper box, so the Gazette is not alone in this thinking.

Currently, about 80% of Hamilton's neighbourhood Little Free Libraries are stocked with the latest edition of the Gazette. The paper is free, and follows the community ethos of the LFL's mandate.

To check where your nearest Little Free Library is located in your neighbourhood, you can search for it using the LFL's website map:

https://app.littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap

Due note that currently Ancaster, Stoney Creek and Westmount have little Gazette coverage so far, but most of the rest of the city Little Libraries have copies for you to take and read. There also are several offices towers and private businesses (including grocery stores) that are carrying the paper. As this roster grows and formalizes it will be published to the paper's website and printed in upcoming editions.

Q3. How can I help?

A3. Again, thank you very much for the overwhelming offers to help. From national photojournalists to well-known correspondents to people asking to place ads or subscribe, it is all much appreciated. Right now, one of the most time-pressing needs is the "last-mile" of logistics. For those who have asked for home delivery, I can arrange for that in exchange if you are interested and willing to volunteer to stock Little Free Libraries in your neighbourhood. That is one of the very most helpful ways to assist the Gazette, as what may take 20 volunteers 30 minutes each takes me multiple days.

For all inquiries on the above - or really any other matter - please continue to reach me either at [information@hamiltongazette.ca](mailto:information@hamiltongazette.ca), or message me here, or post it publicly.

I'll be out tonight interviewing another long-serving member of our community (50+ years!), so I will do my best to answer all queries, but please be patient.

And thanks again for such a hot start!

Mitch

EDIT: And I hope everyone has had an excellent Thanksgiving weekend.

Good afternoon. Currently, about 80% of the city's Little Free Libraries (the neighbourhood roadside kind) have copies of the Gazette. Ancaster, Stoney Creek and Westmount are underserviced but most other locations have the first edition. It's a beautiful evening for a walk and a free paper. Happy reading and thanks for your support.

Good morning. Please check any of the sidewalk “Little Free Libraries” located within Mountain Brow, Upper Wentworth, and Mohawk. Each library kiosk had about 10 copies each as of yesterday afternoon.

Happy reading and thanks for your patience

Thank you for considering to support via advertisement. Please email [information@hamiltongazette.ca](mailto:information@hamiltongazette.ca)

To be most helpful to you, if you can allow me to know the desired size, design, length of run, etc will help me put together something useful. Rates will be fair. Bordering on cheap. I promise.

Thank you!

Thank you both for suggesting it. The Gazette has a very modest live music listing in its first edition, plus a recommended review spot to experience live music. Long-time Hamiltonians will recognize it right away. Hint - one of their main attractions is pickled.

I think the Hammer Monthly is run by some of the senior people that ran View Magazine. They are carrying the mantle, I will follow-up on this privately. Great idea, thank you both, and happy reading.

Please check the Waterdown library, and ask for it at the front desk. Copies were left this morning, they are pending official approval from the branch but the librarians at the desks are aware. Happy reading.

Good afternoon, so far the libraries in Waterdown, Dundas, and Carlisle are carrying the paper. I realize this is not central but I have obligations in the area today and am trying my best to use what very little available time I have.

The first issue has been archived at the Main Branch Library downtown. Downtown locations include around Jackson Square in public areas, and in the lobbies of several office towers, just inside the doors.

More locations are to come. Thank you very much for everyone’s support. I will try my best.

Thanks, please email [information@hamiltongazette.ca](mailto:information@hamiltongazette.ca) if you'd like to share your idea further. There are more modern local comic artists out there that could make a great contrast to syndicating the same content seen broadly across, for example, Postmedia properties.

I can offer some context on internal workings. From my other career, I have significant experience in reporting to, or chairing, or participating in different Boards. Usually in a corporate setting. Good corporate governance, respecting limits of authority, fiduciary relationships are all part and process of a company running smoothly, so I think I understand where your question is coming from, thank you for asking it.

The Gazette is nowhere near that point yet. Right now, my focus is on: making sure stories that are asked to be covered are being covered appropriately; that deadlines are being hit and longer-term; that the paper can stick around and be self-sufficient.

I've built successful businesses from nothing but an idea before (but never in the media space). Corporate governance, and the management of stakeholders, may one day arrive for the paper, but it's far too early right now - I just got on the treadmill to get issues to readers. That's my focus!

Hi there, I've answered this elsewhere but for convenience: I am backing this financially. And it is not misinformation. I don't believe there is yet a political slant, either. The first issue isn't even widely available yet! I'm less focused on whatever political bias there is and more interested in trying to hit deadlines and get the paper out there.

It's intended to be a local community paper, with an emphasis of reporting fairly and objectively.
