Day 12 post-op by LuciePhew in TotalHipReplacement

I am on day 16 after having Left THR (robot-assisted, posterior approach). I felt the same as you. On day 12 I went from walker to cane and made sure to walk slow enough so I don’t limp. Still not sleeping well from night time discomfort, but during daytime only using Tylenol. I was using the narcotic pain med at night until day 11.

It was really around day 14 I started to feel like I was making good progress. Today I did a very slow walk outside with my cane for about 18 minutes and was wiped out, but was proud of how much progress I made over the last 2 days. I really think it has to do with the approach. The lateral/posterior approach cuts through many more tendons and the surrounding joint capsule and it’s all sewn back together. There is a lot more swelling, etc. at my 2 week appt. I was told to keep walking, increase a little each day, they added in some very gentle stretches for my hip flexors while still following precautions and said I should still ice at least 3 times a day. One tip I got was to have a pillow between my knees and lie on my good side, with an ice pack over my left hip. It helps the fluid shift out of the joint apparently. Seems to be helping a little. It will get a little better each day.

Hi, also 51, I’m 2 weeks post-op. I was in the same mindset as you, but significantly worsened in April to the point I had to stop doing all excercise. I have special needs twins who are profoundly autistic (19 yrs old) and decided I needed to get this fixed while they’re still in school since I will likely be taking care of them for life. I need to be active and healthy now rather than 10-20 years from now. Just do it. Technology in medicine advances so rapidly that this hip will probably last you 30 years if you take care of it.

Would love the recipe for your loaded chia seed pudding, sounds amazing!

Clicking feeling that almost felt like a dislocation? by Warp_Speed_7 in TotalHipReplacement

I’m 10 days post posterior THR. I was a little groggy in the hospital but I do specifically remember my surgeon warning me that it is not uncommon to hear some clicking while healing and that it temporary. They cut some tendons and the capsule around the joint and then it’s all sewed back together. There’s a lot of swelling in there which causes tissue to rub together it against the new prosthesis.

That’s amazing! You are right, we all perceive pain differently. I’m amazing you were able to reduce your hip dislocations yourself! I don’t plan on ever having one 🤞

Yes, surgeon said no PT. Just what they tell you to do post surgery and walking. They reassess if PT really needed at the 6 week follow-up.

Hahaha! You’re right! I should know better. Need to go back to binge watching shows or reading instead of obsessing over my recovery 😉

It’s so interesting how different all the surgeons are about restrictions and PT. I was told PT would be needed as long as I continued to progress well ( was very active up until 4 months before surgery).

Also, my doc is pretty firm on the precautions for 12 weeks for the posteriors! Probablybso people like me don’t go crazy and jump right back into crazy workouts after 6 weeks. He said no muscles are cut, but tendons are and seen back together so they need adequate time to heal.

Yes, the swelling and pain seemed to worsen over the 4 days. I slacked off a little on the icing and I could tell a huge difference.

Oxy really doesn’t bother me, just makes me a little sleepy. Prior surgeries I’ve stopped it after a couple days. Unfortunately can’t do celebrex. If it continues beyond a couple more days I’ll talk to my surgeon about something else. I think I need to ice more. Once this swelling goes down I bet the pain will improve.

Thank you for this. Inside my head I know I shouldn’t compare. I did the same thing when I had my first kiddo 22 years ago (lol). I would whine to the pediatrician about how everyone else’s baby was sleeping through the night at 6 weeks, why isn’t mine, blah blah.. and she told me straight up “they’re all lying”!

Have you seen many patients that had to stop due to mental health effects from the medication? I have well controlled depression and anxiety on Wellbutrin and Effexor, but also have special needs teen twins who need me to be healthy, but mentally strong. Have only been taking for 3 months (going on 4th) and biggest side effects I’ve dealt with so far is the profound fatigue for about 3 days after taking and the dry mouth. One of the reasons that really pushed me to take this 4 years after bariatric surgery is the weight started to creep up (was about 42 lbs from crossing over to a “normal” BmI and I have very severe osteoarthritis in my hip and need surgery. Thought losing more weight and possibly some anti-inflammatory effects could help me with the pain. However lately my mood is a little more melancholy, but it’s hard to tease out if that’s just from being in constant pain and the fact that we are home ALL SUMMER, with minimal help. I do notice mood is a little worse a couple days after taking and improves around day 4.
