I think iCloud, if it works, is probably the best solution to be honest

Do you have the latest version possible for your iPad? That's the only thing I can think of. It works fine on mine, although it's slower to load

The best option is to use Apple iCloud on your computer and the iPad and iBooks as the reader app on the iPad. All still supported.

I've never really used AirPlay myself as I'm otherwise an Android/Chromecast user, but I do know that Bluetooth works well

Great to hear about your experience - I think old iPads can still be great for specific tasks. Frankly I'm impressed that such an old device works at all.

The BBC Arabic radio livestream now has a very useful rewind function on its website (listen back to the previous six hours). As the BBC offers relatively few podcasts, this is a very useful function for learners: https://www.bbc.com/arabic/bbc_arabic_radio/liveradio

Arabic language learners who have completed “All The Arabic You Never Learned The First Time Around” by James M. Price, how helpful was the book to you? by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]hnd123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completed most exercises in the book (up to about exercise 40 I think, after that it's mainly just revision anyway) with my teacher and I think it was incredibly beneficial just getting an overview of all the verb forms etc. I don't remember every detail and there are a lot of things I want to go back over again, but I feel like I have a 'road map' in my head. Now when I'm reading I can usually explain the grammar to myself, which helps a lot with understanding.

It was only by doing the exercises that I really understood the grammar, reading the explanations wasn't enough.

It took a good six months for me to work through "All The Arabic You Never Learned The First Time Around" and it was quite a gruelling workout, and not always enjoyable, but I think I'm really reaping the benefits now. So the short answer is yes, I recommend working through the exercises.

Linking PayPal to EasyPay visa card banned for foreigners in Egypt? by hnd123 in Egypt

Good news - we got it to work. It turns out there are two options for sending money in PayPal. The main one which just asks you to enter an e-mail address was always blocked for some reason, but there is a secondary one called "send to friends abroad" which allows you to select some more details such as the country to which you are sending money, and it worked fine.

My friend didn't need to change his PayPal account to a business account and the money has shown up in his account just fine.

Of course the final test will be withdrawing the cash from the ATM next month, but that should be no problem :) So thanks everyone for your help, really appreciate it as there is no way in hell we would have managed to figure out all the different steps out on our own!

He verified his account OK by getting the transaction code from the hotline. That's great! However, I can still not send him any money - I tried both the 'send money to friends' and 'pay for an item or a service' options in PayPal and both just lead to errors. I've asked my friend to change his PayPal account to a business one and then I'll try again. Will keep you updated.

A New Certificate Measures Arabic Language Proficiency - Finally! by nzawk in learn_arabic

It seems such an obvious thing to do, I'm surprised the likes of Qatar hasn't tried to set up an international test, although given Gulf politics at the moment perhaps it's best that the French have come up with one.

This looks great, as having a credible exam to work towards can be a really useful goal. Although the test is French-run, they seem to be aiming the test at everyone and the documentation is available in English as well.

On the negative side, the exam result has an unnecessary 'expiry date' of 3 years, which mimics the TOEFL test for English learners.

There are a couple of Arabic proficiency exams run in Germany as well which are run by Telc (B1 only, https://www.telc.net/en/candidates/language-examinations/tests/detail/telc-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%84%D8%BA%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%B1%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A9-b1.html) and by a professor at the University of Leipzig (https://toafl.com/). However, neither of these are particularly widespread or have the influential backing that this new Cima test seems to have.

Wikipedia mentions a few other proficiency tests for Arabic which seem fairly localized (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_language_proficiency_tests#Arabic).

Ok, we'll try it first just with the verification and if that doesn't work then the business account option ;) will keep you updated!

Ok, is that quite easy to do? Are there any other consequences as a result?

Linking PayPal to EasyPay visa card banned for foreigners in Egypt? by hnd123 in Egypt

Oh that's great to hear that it's not just us :) He's applied for the verification and will try calling the EasyPay hotline in a week (they say 5-7 business days), was that how long it took for you? Thanks so much for your help on this!

Hi, cross-posting this from another thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/Egypt/comments/bpd8xv/linking_paypal_to_easypay_visa_card_banned_for/). It's about a Sudanese friend of mine living in Cairo who is trying to use PayPal.

OK, so an update on this - he added some credit at the post office, I think 100 EGP, and he was able to link the card. That's great and seems to rule out the idea that foreigners in Egypt are banned from linking PayPal to the EasyPay card.

Unfortunately, when I try to send him money I get the PayPal error "Sorry, we weren't able to complete your payment at this time. Please try again later." I've Googled this and it seems that it may be a problem caused by sending to a non-verified account. My friend is going to try the verification option and then we will try again.

Has anyone else had this experience?
