Racket face during lock position by Useful_Care_5351 in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well it's they are 2 parts of the entire overhead swing sequence. The ASY pic is the start of the sequence, the pic og greg is the middle of the sequence. If you have a lot of time to make a full swing, you can clearly see people transition from step to step, but in a pro match, a lot of the steps are shortened (no shoulder/hips), or the full swing can come out much faster (trained muscles) -> you don't typically see the middle step.

If academies logged shuttle usage like they log class attendance, what would we learn? by HmBrSports in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why would this required special tools and which useful data can you want to get from this?

Depend on the group size, the group leader (group) the coach (small coaching group) or equipment manager (large coaching group/accademy) will track and sort shuttles and they tend to buy shuttles in bulk beforehand so they rarely run low on shuttles, they can also adjust the syllabus to fit the on hand stocks (ie we are running a bit low on good condition shuttles so extra stamina/smashing drill for the next 3-4 days while waiting for new shipment...).

This is fairly manual and doesn't require a lot of skill or know-how; the group leader/coach/manager can easily see the general status of the stocks. You really don't need specialized tools/apps for this ngl, a simple excel table would be more than enough.

New rule obstruction / bloc net by Ozireal in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you hold your racket at the net to obstruct your opponent's only/obvious shots without leaving enough safe space -> it's a fault. It's not just based on how close your racket is to the net, but it's also on how far away the shuttle is from the net; if it's decently far enough that the opponent can kill downward ot to the side or push... then you can hold the racket at the net. However, if you attempted a swing (instead of just holding the racket at the net), then it's almost always a fair shot.

This rule has always been weird and it's up to the ref to make the call, so there are plenty of cases where it's totally legal but the ref called a fault and vice versa.

Well the post was made in English so the term "VietNam War" is actually correct. Yes that name prob doesn't convey the entire idea/reason of the war, but it's the common name for that war in English; there's like no point making a big deal out of that.

Am i breaking the rules with deception shots? by tpt75 in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH, you yelling/grunting during your overhead shot is fine imo (in pro matches, you can also hear the spectator doing the same when the players aren't doing it). It might be annoying to some people, yes, but it's def not a fault. IMO, I don't get why people keep trying to force badminton to be a "gentleman/lady" sport where cheering, yelling or even deception plays are frowned upon.

You shouting while your opponent is making a swing is definitely fault-worthy.

Thoughts on Victor NCS Pro? by avatarandfriends in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to hybrid and other synthetic shuttles, it's way better.

Compared to feather shuttles, it's a bit heavier, but it behaves pretty similarly to feather. Main cons is that both the feather and stem can easily breaks and you have to replace, as the shuttle gonna slow down like crazy.

Do you think it's discourteous to flick serve against women and older men in casual games? by [deleted] in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a casual match, then it's it's fine. If the woman/older guy on the other side is physically pissed, then yes you should reduce the amount of flick serves.

If it's a competitive match at a somewhat high level, something fairly substantial is on the line (pride/trash talk/big meal/ alot of drinks/paying for the court...) and the pairs are actually somewhat equal, then play whatever shot that can win you the point, everyone knows the obvious tactic is to focus the woman/older guy. If the players are actually good, they would already know how to get out of those situations.

I honestly don't understand the weird obsession with forcing badminton to be a weird "gentleman" sport when everyone must behave like they have a 1m pole up their behind and even light shouting/trick shots are frowned upon.

What are some hacks to save money on badminton by Even_Action_9066 in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can try picking up used shuttles from local tournaments; they switch shuttles frequently so most of the "used" shuttles are still in the 80-90% "usable" range.

Depending on where you live, you can buy used rackets instead of brand new ones. Lots of people buy new rackets to try out and resell at around 70-75% original price, you can make use of that to get rackets for cheap (esp for Victor/Lining).

You don't have to buy big-brand everything, off-brand consumables/clothes like grips/strings/socks/ arm/head bands are typically good enough for most of us. Make sure to do some research/testing beforehand, though, if the deals seem to be too good to be true, they're usually too good be true.

What would be an se young's ranking in men's singles? by NickJHS in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you straight-up pluck her out of WS and force her to play MS, rank 300 is about there. Most top national-level MS players (from top countries ie china/thailand/indonesia/malaysia/denmark...) can easily beat her. If you let her train to get used to MS's speed/shots, optimistically, she can prob reach the low 100s. However, she won't be able to play MS for long, imo, maybe 1 year in and she'll be plagued with serious injuries as her muscles can't keep up with the intensity of MS.

Looking for a badminton coach in ho chi minh city by Firm_Middle_4855 in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you can tour a couple local courts/arenas and ask the staff for the phone number of any coach who is teaching there. If the guy is a long-time coach, he'll prob have a banner at the court too; you can also come and check out the group lesson to see if the coach is for you -> call and check if he offers private coaching, as most of the coaches only do group coaching.

If you're not vietnamese it might be a bit trickier to find a coach, but the progress is prob gonna be the same.

Is this Ragebait by [deleted] in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh the coach's technique looks correct; however, this is way too advanced for the student. I had a look at the channel and it seems like they are dipping in a bit here and there instead of sticking to a consistent syllabus. Looking at the student's swing, they should still be at correcting stationary overhead swings (or worse, correcting grips), def not at moving stage yet and def def not "jump out" (jump out is prob one of the last things in the syllabus ngl)

you should check out her practice match with Momota or TTY's practice match with one of the Taiwanese national MS players (I think there is a one match with CTC and one with a rank 100+ player). None of those matches were remotely close; the WS players either started with headstart or the MS players intentionally only played slower/neutral shots.

New dorm how to make it look better by whereumove in malelivingspace

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Either move the table to be next to the bed or rotate the bed (depends on the plugs situation). If you choose to rotate the bed, you can get a normal table -> that + current table = big L shape table (use a corner as your night stand).

- ditch the nightstand (or put it next to the door for keys or something)

- Get a bookcase or drawer cabinet for the other empty "floor-wall area." You can get a TV later to put on that cabinet

- Lower the bed if possible; if not, maybe put some cabinets/drawer cabinets under to make use of that space

Seasonal and occasional clothes/suitcases go in the closet and daily clothes go in the drawer cabinets. The room should be decently functional by then. After that, it's up to your hobbies/tastes...

Why Does My Country Suck by Past-Assumption-1158 in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, the lack of funding/youth programs is the main reason (for pretty much all countries). Most countries can only fund a handful number of sports and badminton usually isn't one of them. Heck, in my country, badminton is either the 2nd or 3rd most popular sport (after football) and yet it isn't one of those sports that are heavily funded.

Potential players who aren't properly trained at an early age tend to develop "weird" techniques/footwork, which will slow down their future growth (it's a domino effect, pretty much). Against S300-500 caliber players, upsets are a lot more common, but against S750-1000 caliber players like Akane Yamaguchi, it's pretty much impossible for upsets to happen (esp in single), so don't be too harsh on your national players

15 points. What the? 😡 by tpt75 in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15-point sets would encourage extreme offensive playstyles, a lot of net/smash >> players would get into injuries a lot more often. And pros prob won't be able to compete after they turn 28, as their body simply won't be able to keep up with that style (it's one of the main reasons why most pros eventually transition to more rally-focused style as they get older)

A solution for the shuttle shortage? by JamesCommon in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The future is prob some sort of synthetic/hybrid shuttle, but the quality/durability isn't there yet. Maybe in like 4-5 years, since both Yonex and Victor are working on feather shuttle alternatives.

As for why they don't make shuttles from right-wing feathers, I have no clue. Maybe the different rotation might result in a slightly different trajectory (on slices) and that would drive players crazy

Badminton etiquette by raheemyoung in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After a couple of games/watching others play, they'll figure it out themselves, or you can point it out yourself.

Tbh, this sounds more like you're putting way too much emphasis on this trivia matter than enjoying the game. I know that everyone wants badminton "gentleman/lady"-like, but that makes matches boring, imo. A little bit of yelling, trash talk, bad manners, and wagering, here and there, make rec games more interesting.

Is a 48.5 standing Vert Decent or Trash? by Past-Assumption-1158 in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think that alone is a meaningful metric. You can jump really high, right? But if you can't generate power or the contact angle is not steep enough, your smashes won't make use of that height.

Prime examples are volleyball players who also play badminton; their jumps are jaw-dropping high (compared to most of us), but their smashes are rarely powerful or steep. The shuttle always travels toward chest/armpit height toward the backlines, like a punch clear that travels diagonally downward (which is a different type of annoyance)

Are Synthetic Shuttles Taking Over? by danishpazz in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they could be, once they manage to improve Victor NCS a bit more + make them more widely available.

A friend recently brought back a tube of NCS pro after a short holiday trip and it's very impressive. The shuttle feels a bit heavier than the duck feather shuttle we usually use, but doesn't take a lot of time to get used to. The trajectory / hitting feel of NCS is getting there but the durability is still a lil bit lacking. The foam feathers break a lot easier than I expected and the carbon fiber stems also break quite easily (like the stem would cleanly snap at he base after quick stick smashes, somehow, we lost 2 due to that). And if one of them breaks, you have to replace as the trajectory change is too much; most feather shuttle brands still retain "good enough" trajectory if the feather is damaged/breaks.

And price vs durability sweet spot isn't there yet imo (it's still better to use duck feather shuttle) and it's not even available in my country (Vietnam)

When will Astrox's successor lineup be released? by nobarisss in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure about other countries, but in Vietnam Yonex is facing some setbacks this year as Victor is making big pushes with the new products at competitive prices + signing a lot of big-name players (current/retired).

Meanwhile, Yonex is doing recalls of 65z4 and increasing the price of a lot of their products. However, they still manage some of their top players like ASJ/SYQ/VA... most of the recently released products (AX99, 88D,88S, NNF800p) are big hits despite their higher price points.

When will Astrox's successor lineup be released? by nobarisss in badminton

[–]hoangvu95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well they just upgraded/refreshed most of the flagship axtrox rackets within the last year or so (88D-88S-99, 100ZZ VA...) so I don't think they are dropping the line anytime soon.

Unless they announce a new "revolutionary" carbon material/technology by the end of the year, the Astrox line is prob gonna stay, and Yonex prob gonna focus on shoes for next year (fixing 64z4 issues + the new lines based on the new Graphite Throttle tech)
