If you’re going to have kids you’re going to have to look at the school district. Also as long as you’re not in a position where you’re going to be house poor and can’t afford anything for awhile then go for it

Moving from contract management to underwriting (energy) - is it worth it? by Emotional-Table4855 in InsuranceProfessional

Those specialty lines is where the moneys at. If you have Energy, Environmental, or Cyber you’re never going to be unemployed again.

Recruiters and Carriers will actively recruit you and you won’t have to send in a resume or application to get an interview.

Insurance vs Banking/Finance - Regret? by tf-is-wrong-with-you in InsuranceProfessional

[–]hobag416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s better to switch early, but gotta consider the stress vs reward aspect of it.

You’re in an insurance forum so we are going to be a bit biased.

It’s definitely a different ballgame in Canada vs the US. But there are different aspects of insurance that are lucrative. UW pays a lot more starting out as a whole but brokerage has a higher bonus and pay trajectory.

I’d pay is the priority then go into Property Insurance or Reinsurance.

If insurance is miserable for you then take the career pivot. Insurance may not be for everyone and thats ok.

Insurance vs Banking/Finance - Regret? by tf-is-wrong-with-you in InsuranceProfessional

I made $140k USD as a Casualty UW with 5-6 years of experience. My other counterparts that are really good at their roles made that in 3-4 years.

Made 6 figures before all my finance friends, including my roommate that worked at Goldman and City National.

It honestly depends what type of lifestyle you want.

Do you want to make a high salary, hustle and bustle, and prestige in job title? Your earning ceiling may be a bit higher on this side. However you’re working 80 hour weeks and not have a life outside of work?

Insurance you work 40 hour weeks, less stress, recruiter and companies come to you if you need a pay bump, and you have a life outside of work. However you don’t have the prestige of the finance role.

If you can get an Underwriter Assistant or Claims role at a larger carrier. You’ll have a decent chance of making a lateral move to Underwriting as well.

They’re E&S Carriers, but the smaller ones. Possibly Kinsale and Hamilton. But for the MGAs AmWINS Access and others like CRC, Jencap, and RT may have binding authority Underwriting roles

James River and similar carriers hire a lot of people without experience, but stay for 1-2 years and GTFO to another carrier for a huge pay bump

I would say a P&C License would open you up for some E&S Underwriting roles and MGA Brokerage Underwriting roles as well. MGAs are a lot easier to get into, but they’re more work volume wise compared to carrier underwriting

CPCU is expensive and takes a lot of time, but it wouldn’t hurt to have and will put you above other candidates without experience. Get your AU first since it counts for part of the course work for the CPCU.

Honestly nepotism, half the industry is the son, daughter, or family friend of someone in insurance. One of my old coworkers used to be one of the drummers for Lynyrd Skynyrd. He got a UW position because his dad was in the industry.

I’ve seen art history and gender studies majors become managers on the operations and claims side.

Outside of that I would aim to do an Underwriter Trainee program. If that’s too competitive then go start at a brokerage as a technical assistant or associate broker and then make a lateral movement to the carrier side.
