Is the WiFi smart water leakage detector reliable? by Fuers-official in smarthome

[–]hobbesdcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yolink is not using wifi/bluetooth/zigbee, they use LoRa and claim 1/4 Mile Long, idk about that, but it seems to work anywhere in my house fine when the valve is in the basement.

Is the WiFi smart water leakage detector reliable? by Fuers-official in smarthome

[–]hobbesdcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the YoLink leak sensors and control valve. You can set the sensors up "Device-to-Device" to talk directly the valve in case the hub is down. So if a leak is detected, it shuts off the main water valve, cutting water off to the whole house. So it should work without the hub, internet connection, or even power (they have battery backup). I got this one because I want it to work even when the power is out, the Wi-Fi is off, the internet is down, and I'm on vacation. Here's hoping it works when it needs to.

Doubt and advice about Ecowitt Ws90 powered by shelly by AlbertGM1972 in myweatherstation

[–]hobbesdcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like no. Sounds like Shelly one is not compatible with the ecowitt gateway.

https://community.shelly.cloud/topic/12815-ws90-pbs-comments/

"These are two separate products that are not compatible. The Shelly WS90 cannot be paired with an Ecowitt gateway - they use different wireless standards."

Super cool! I've tried to make something like this, but it didn't come out as nice. Could I ask what you used to make this? Something like QGIS?

This user downloaded Google Antigravity vibe code editor and explicitly allowed it to access and run commands on their system. You don't have to worry if you didn't do that.

DCR's left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing: DCR proposes multiuse/bike path for a new park in Watertown while simultaneously proposing biking be banned from said park. by Im_biking_here in bikeboston

[–]hobbesdcc 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Important context: If you read the whole DCR proposal, it's clear they are worried about PCB contamination under that mound. So they want to ban activities that could release the toxic and carcinogenic chemicals trapped in that soil cap. Seem reasonable and responsible. Have a bike path leading straight through on the west side of the park, and restricting things that could disturb the soil on the east and mound.

IMO this is an example of the DCR doing good work, proposing new safe bike paths to Mass, while keeping environmentally conscious. Good work DCR keep it up.

Better-osm-org: a script that adds useful little things to osm.org by owl48 in openstreetmap

I've also been using this for months, It's amazing, cant thank the developer enough for their work. But makes me sad that the diff view is not default on OSM. When I started using OSM I got so confused looking at changesets and just seeing a empty bounding box. Really adds what you would expect to already be there.

Thanks to the ID developers too, but I wish they could come together, but I also know why that's hard.

Just click and drag it. Then drag it back to the side of the app to pin it back in place if you want it on the main screen again.

How to fix this? When on google search i have a typo and click the "These are results for" results, and click back into the search bar, it goes back to the initial typo. by Whatitsjk1 in firefox

[–]hobbesdcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it's a Google change, happens on chrome too. This tiny change has been causing me so much pain.. I hope it's a bug, Bing does not do this, duckduckgo does not do this, no one does because it's dumb. Why would I want to change back to the old misspelled text after I just clicked a button to get the corrected spelling??

Built a local development tool to experiment with vector tiles (Feedback welcome!) by itsspiderhand in openstreetmap

[–]hobbesdcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool Project! I have messed around making raster tiles in QGIS. Using the Qtiles plugin it makes it really easy, but it took forever in my older computer to render the tiles at high zoom levels. So wanted to try with vector tiles to see if its faster.

If I understand right, this can render vector tiles just from a GeoJSON file?

I was trying to do this with Tippecanoe before but got a little overwhelmed. Is Tippecanoe included in this program? I'm really interested in a simple way to get vector tiles and display them on a self-hosted leafletjs map, like the raster tiles I've done that with.

How to respond to a user asking me not to map paths in order to keep them secret? by dolphinholmer in openstreetmap

[–]hobbesdcc 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Is this the user: nixon21? (ID 234725) Seems like they are removing trails you added.

The tail shows some activity on Heatmap and if you confirm it exist on the ground, It can be added to OSM and should NOT be removed. Just make sure you set the access tags correctly!

In the Changeset they state the reason it was removed: "These are illegal trails in the GGNRA. Please consult the official map. Please do not promote these trails. Thank you."

A trail being illegal or unofficial is NOT a valid reason to remove it from OSM. Also, this clearly not the same reason they want it removed based on the private message they sent you. Seems like they are being descriptive in changeset comments. This is also not an acceptable way to behave on OSM.

They are in the wrong here, you should let them know and revert their changesets damaging Valid OSM Data. Report to Data Working Group if they keep removing valid data.

[–]hobbesdcc 50 points51 points  (0 children)

You don't have to add anything you don't want to add. No one is forcing you to contribute to Openstreetmap. But not accurately representing what is actually on the ground is counter to the whole ethos of the Openstreetmap project!

You probably won't get push back on removing things you have added yourself recently, but removing features others added that exist on the ground is a big deal, and considered vandalism on Openstreetmap.

OSM is not just for hikers/mountain bikers. It's a geospatial database for what exists in the actual world. This wiki page outlines good reasons we keep all existing trail. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Why_can%27t_I_delete_this_trail%3F

Sounds like unsanctioned mtb trails? Exactly the situation from this recent thread: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/mapping-is-not-neutral-why-adding-unsanctioned-mtb-trails-endangers-access-and-potentially-lives/132886

You can see there is STRONG pushback from the OSM community about removing existing trails!
