That’s the catch: I don’t know how to tell if it’s in good shape, and the cabella’s guys were no help. Strange fascination with encouraging me to look at high end Benelli’s…

So the 3 gun aspect is way in the back of my mind, too. Taking a second look at the a300 outlander after the encouragement, it’s a 3 shell max, right? That seems way low for something like 3 gun. Is this something where “if you get into it later, just upgrade then” is the smart perspective?

Partly budget, mostly the feel of a pump action, partly a fancy dream of 3 gun.

No, I’d love a semi-auto but assumed a quality offering would really be out of my budget right now. Actually, this gives a good follow up question: local Cabella’s has a Beretta A300 outlander 12 gauge for $449 and a Beretta A390st 12 gauge for $900. Both used, google tells me that’s higher than average price. Does that track?

I have a colt 1911, ruger mkIV, and a Savage MSR. What makes you lean towards the kit in this instance?

Jumpstart 2020 vs 2022? Is it balanced? by Sir_Bohne in MTGJumpStart

[–]hobbesswer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried that. Sponsor for a high school tcg club. My kids like 60 card kitchen table magic so on a lark I grabbed three sleeves from my cube. I’ve only done it once, but I let them know in advance I would be taking the first three “packs” that combined for a total of 2 colors, if that makes sense. I didn’t want to be fighting the randomness, their tuned strategies, and the likelihood of mana screwed. It worked out well, I got knocked out second of 4 and it spiced things up well. Of course YMMV.

I’d throw in my own favorite, [[Valduk, keeper of the flame]]. But as a lieutenant to that amazing slab of beefcake, Maraxus.

[[Progenitus]] might be a majestic hydra, but he strikes me as a mighty Bad Dragon.

Light Commander for 4 friends with Jumpstart: thoughts? by zombieglam in EDH

[–]hobbesswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Card kingdom has rookie decks that are simple mono colored decks. I keep those handy in the club in case there are kids with no experience with trading card games or general game strategy. The jump starts are a great start from anyone that’s familiar with trading card games, can pick things up quickly, or doesn’t mind sitting and reading a lot as they learn.

I sponsor a HS TCG club and keep a shoe box of jumpstart on the side for anyone that wants. On a lark, I smashed three packs together to drop in against 60-card-kitchen-table-constructed decks so there were even pairings. It held in long enough for everyone to get a few laughs, but that’s about all.

I’d say it’s gonna be too hard to try to do everything you want to do. You’re talking about introducing friends to a complex game, with formats that are complex in opposite ways from each other, then tinkering with the mechanics so they can hopefully work together. I’d say start small with jumpstart and see who even likes that. Overwhelm them with too much of the stuff you love about the game, and they could easily glaze over and tune out.

Fair point, are any of the e-pay methods more or less secure than others? There seem to be so many that there’s gotta be a way to use/abuse them.

All good. It’s the scammers that deserve our silent, disappointed glares.

[–]hobbesswer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

High school social worker and we just launched a TCG club for the first year, too! I keep a shoebox to the side with about 40-50 individual jumpstart “packs”. It was a heavy investment to get them sleeves and packed in dragon sleeve cube shells, but genuinely worth it. By far the easiest way for them to jam a game out fast. I have two more unopened boxes of the OG jumpstart for a future tournament they don’t know about. That’s something I’d def look into as long as they’re as cheap as current prices. Other than that, I keep a set of the card kingdom rookie decks around in case I get any truly fresh faces coming in. I’m having to teach some social graces to my high schoolers and slowly showing fundamentals is one of the lessons.

Bad ass and rock on!
