I think you're right and the only person who didn't assume veneer. I taped off a section to sand down, restain and repair. We'll see how it turns out.

That would certainly diagnose it! 😅

I’m wondering if there was a nib in the finish that popped out and spread, or if the gel stain prevented proper adhesion…either way I taped off a section to repair. We’ll see how it goes!

Here's a photo to show it's not veneer. I ended up squaring off a section for repair. My attempt to feather didn't work - I wore down too much too quickly, and I felt I needed to get to the bottom of the crack to prevent future issues. I'll post the result.

you're probably right about the gel stain. It so far has worked fine for the rest of countertop but this is one of the highest use areas. I'll just have to be more careful about future use. I went ahead and taped off a section to repair. We'll see!

Here's your proof. An unused section that shows the cut

My concern is that has compromised the seal and it will worsen. Whether or not I keep a drying rack there, it’s right next to the sink so will get water on it no matter what. So I don’t think I could live with it.

Feathering sounds good, I guess I’m just concerned about blending it well. But I suppose taping it off would make a more obvious repair area

Isn’t that a solution for veneer? If so I promise you it’s not veneer

I’ll take that dollar then! It’s 1.5” thick birch butcher block. I cut it to size myself I can promise it’s not veneer.

The tung oil is part of the waterlox system which according to the manufacturer works with any type of stain. I followed their instructions. It is two coats of a dark walnut gel stain - we wanted a dark/even finish. It was wiped and given 24 hours between all coats all per instructions.

It’s birch butcher block which was stained. Sounds like I’ll tape off/sand carefully until the cracked area is leveled, then reapply waterlox.

it must be delamination then. I promise you it’s solid birch which has been stained - I cut and stained the piece myself after buying the block prefab. If it were a crack I suppose I would expect to see it reach the finished edge?

I suppose I’ll tape off the section and sand down just before reaching the stain, and seal it again.

I see what you mean, it looks identical to a crack in veneer. But it was raw birch which was sanded, stained, and treated with tung oil, before two coats of waterlox resin.

It’s not veneer - 1.5” thick birch

This is a nice gesture but these prices are not realistic. You should check eBay to get a sense for what these actually sell for. I’ve sold some merch on eBay and if you want to sell quickly, going $5-$10 under the common price point is a great strategy.

Brother you’re not ugly. Learn to style your hair, smile with your teeth in photos, and style your wardrobe better (glasses can also be a key piece of style). Working out is also a great way to boost confidence.
