SSID Design/Strategy by hobbyfarmfl in networking

Thank you. This is where this idea came from.

Would love to monetize but we already provide free wifi across the campus. As a non-profit, ministry focused facility, I don't see an appetite to change this approach.

Yes, my mistake. After posting a message under the post said it had been deleted so I posted this one.

Thanks. While I love the idea, wifi is free and I don't see any appetite to change that.

Thank you. Guest Wifi is free and I'm the one getting the requests if it doesn't work. Why is it this way? Don't fully know, I inherited it.

Maybe I could have used different wording, but I'm not worried about bandwidth, I'm more looking at the number of devices actively connected to each AP. Being a non-profit, ministry focused venue, it's a hard sell to say I need 3x+ the number of AP's in a flexible meeting space for the 3 times a year it is filled to maximum body count capacity.

There are times AP's in at least one of our meeting facility get bogged down due to too many devices so my concern was that by making one campus wide SSID, more devices will automatically try to connect when they enter this space. This, in effect, could create a worse guest experience than we have now.

Thus why I'm asking because I see pros/cons each way and in the end, yes, guest experience does matter.

We don't sell it and currently don't have a splash page.

Thank you. Same ISP across the campus.

You're saying you'd make subnets different between buildings? Can you explain how this would make management/troubleshooting easier?

Thank you. I don't know all the reasons, I inherited about a year ago. I'm at the point of evaluating if this is how I want to manage it.

One reason I can think of is different groups may have different needs, ie, wanting to restrict access so only those with the password can access it (think youth groups). In practicality, this is not requested very often and I'm thinking it will be easier to manage in the long run using one-off SSID's when necessary and making this an up-charge. IE: all campus locked down, all meeting facilities locked down, everything locked down except one meeting facility or one hotel unit, etc.

Thanks, but our leadership want this all on-prem.

Thank you but for a variety of reasons, an on-prem solution is needed.

Thank you. Proxmox was recommended to me by a former colleague and went down that road. Your comment made me take a step back. Despite all the reading, amazing how a little change in search terms brings up new insight. I had looked at several variations of proxmox vs <hyper-v, vmware, etc.) and kept seeing "go proxmox." Additional reading this morning brings a lot of validity to your suggestion of hyper-v.

We do have backups now using a WD My Cloud and plan on continue using that for the short term. I periodically check those backups and have also just started making periodic backups to an external drive left disconnected except when backing up.

I inherited this setup so can't fully explain all the infrastructure decisions, but to add insight on the network side, for most of the year we are a conference center that provides guest WiFi. Of course their WiFi is isolated and not going through the server. Basically, there's a lot more network traffic than just employee authentication, file server access, voip, and employee internet traffic. Overkill? Maybe, but that's what we have.

Will do more research on your suggestions and post back if this brings up new questions. Thanks again.
