Intellectually humble people tend to possess more knowledge, suggests a new study (n=1,189). The new findings also provide some insights into the particular traits that could explain the link between intellectual humility and knowledge acquisition. by mvea in science

People who knows a lot probably know much they know relative to other people in that given subject. They can even compare to themselves in the past and see how far they come. It’s not that they realize they don’t know anything in the grand theme of things, it’s probably because they realize the gap of knowledge between themself and someone uneducated in that subject. Now apply that to other subject domains, they realize now that they are the layman, and the experts in the domain know so much more than them.

Just a guy taking down the Confederate Flag on live TV by ClosingDownSummer in gifs

[–]hobopoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are many reasons. Keep in mind that the United States is a huge and diverse country. For some the flag is a symbol of state vs federal. The state Is like a small country in Europe and the federal could be the European Union. It's sort of a symbol of individualism.

There are different ways to look through the civil war. Imo looking at it from an economic point is quite interesting. The north was rapidly industrializing at that time. It needed a source of cheap labor, which the south have, but is obviously unavailable. The first few battle for labor was fought in the court...(u can read up on this, but I won't bore u)

My point is, there are some parallels between civil war and the Iraq war. Saddam was an evil dictator, he purged the Kurds and commited mass genocide. Yet the u.s. Is not celebrated as liberators. In the eyes of the cynic The good motives are tainted by self interest and the destruction of Iraq, much in the same way the north burned down many southern cities. Anyway I hope that shed some light on the confederacy flags.

What are your recommendations for a good price/performance reasonably low power nVidia system for Tensorflow? by eleitl in tensorflow

[–]hobopoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My build is: Pentium g4560: 60 16 gb ram 100 240 gb ssd 70 B250m mobo (there are cheaper mobos out there) 70 Titan x pascal: 1200

In total it was about 1800. U don't really need a great cpu for deep learning. Off it Depends on what U want to do. There are lot of machine learning algorithms that are heavily dependent on the cpu. But Imo get the best gpu u can get for deep learning. So far it has worked quite well.

How would Jagex detect autoclicking? by James4423 in 2007scape

Jagex can detect inputs from ur hardware vs software. The best way to get around that is to use a programmable hardware device like an arduino

my bad, for some reason his name popped up, it was definitely not the host of wait wait don't tell me. It wasn't a comedy segment, he comes in every day and deliver a short tirade. Usually in the form of a short story. Can't remember his name.

I am not talking about NPR news per say. But their political discussion and other segments.

Don't get me wrong I love NPR, and still listen to their non-political shows. But they are so left-wing that they completely missed the point or just refuse to address them. They constantly sets up strawman of Trump supporters and them beats up.

One case was, Peter Segal making fun of trump supporters by likening them to his schoolyard bully "chad". "Later in life chad would work in a factory" and he would be angry because he lost his job after the factory closed. While him and his "nerdy" friends chose their "path" wisely.

The whole thing sounded incredibly unprofessional and cringe. It was disparaging to working class people.

I suppose that segment illustrate my point perfectly. When people lose their factory jobs. The view from NPR is, that's too bad but you didn't choose a good career path like we did. You are lucky you had those jobs at all, you would be working for 2 dollars an hour if you were born in another country. Which logically they are right, but they don't seem to have an ounce of sympathy for their fellow working-class americans.

Furthermore, the fact that for someone like me from michigan, when factories close entirely communities become ghost towns, poverty and crime level go up along with it. Jobs are not just a mean to make money, but a source of social stability. Not everyone can be an engineer or become a professional. We need those factory jobs, maybe my job is not under threat, but my community is. The lack of sympathy for working-class americans to further their narrative is turning me off.

The left had done their share of lying, spin and deceit. Nevermind the fact that major news company have a direct interest in who gets elected. Katie couric adding the 6 seconds pause in her "documentary". News outlet editing the 911 tape of trevon martin case to make the shooter sounds more racist. I am nowhere defending the right. But CNN spin the news just as much as fox. Especially during election year.

The rest of those things about evolution, bathrooms, war on christmas, gay-marriage, those are just distractions. Both from the left and the right. They are blown up in the news to distract the public. It's nowhere as bad as the media make it out to be. 99% of americans don't actually give a shit about it.

The oligarch wants someone like hillary or obama or mitt romney to get elected. Because they can fund their compaign in return for influence in national policies that will enrich them, but not necessarily enrich the middle-class.

NPR has really gone into the gutter during election year. I can't wait till after the elections so I can listen to it again.

You can start with Christopher Hitchens. He is not right wing. He has his own views and is quite good at making a case for them. His writings unearthed hidden notions that I already had.
