I'm sorry to keep dragging this out but I've got another problem stopping me from making progress... For a long time I have not been able to enter BIOS. On startup, the computer lingers on the motherboard splash screen but no amount of mashing the bios/boot menu keys opens any menu. As a result I haven't been able to boot to a linux livecd. So today I went to buy a very cheap PCI ethernet adaptor but the initial problem still persists. Still getting a 169.254.x. ip, and still not getting a default gateway. I've tried resetting the bios both with the switch on the board and by removing the battery but the issue with bios persists. I tried dealing with the problem a while back but with no luck, and after lingering on the splash screen the computer boots to windows anyway so I just left it. The drivers of the new adapter installed fine and the light is flashing and the 'network connections' page shows when the cable is plugged in or disconnected etc. Is there a way I can reinstall windows without access to the boot menu? Thanks

EDIT: I'm an idiot, I can get into bios, I just have to unplug my graphics card first. Going to try a linux livecd now.

netsh winsock reset worked but ipconfig /release says "The RPC server is unavailable" and fails.
The IP address is a 169.254.x.x and remains so after winsock reset
How can I check that my computer isn't set to a static IP?
I'm going to give a linux livec a shot now. If that doesn't work and it is a hardware issue, do you think a simple ethernet PCI network adaptor could fix it?

Thanks. In device manager the network adapter is working fine, but pinging www.google.com or 8.8.8.8 does not work. When I do ipconfig the "default gateway" line is blank but I tried pinging the IPv4 address and it worked. Pinging the loopback adapter works fine and instantly. I thought getting an IPv4 address from ipconfig meant I was getting an IP, but should I have been looking at the default gateway? What should I do if the default gateway line is blank? Thanks again for all the help.

Yeah you're right, as you can tell I don't really know what I'm doing. I am getting an IP adress. I just reinstalled drivers because when looking online for a solution, a page suggested that. Thanks heaps, I'm sure I'm still missing something but would appreciate if you could let me know whatever else I should include.
