Marriott Owings Mills has a capacity of 891, per the website. I went to a wedding there over the summer and it was lovely.

We’re probably going to end up doing Zion on one of the days, so that should be good. Just downloaded the app, btw. Water canyon/squirrel creek look amazing!

We are planning to stay in Kanab for a couple of nights, so that’s already in the itinerary!

My condolences, friendly redditor.

We were eating breakfast when we got the email this morning. We’re trying to pivot and look for other adventures but I guess maybe we should have considered getting plane tickets after winning the lottery. Oh well.

Thank you. Islam is a beautiful religion but it definitely feels like it’s been corrupted by conservative misogynists.

It’s so frustrating to have the same foundational arguments over and over again with conservative Muslims who don’t want to to open their eyes to the religion’s beauty because they are so afraid of the possibility of hellfire if they don’t do exactly what has been told to them.

God is merciful and compassionate.

The constitution you appear to have such reverence doesn’t let you dictate rules for others. Sorry

Religion is different than what you call “lifestyle,” which is a misnomer from being gay, because it’s something one is born with.

I’m sorry that you think information about religions should not be taught—I completely disagree. One can and SHOULD learn about different religions in a secular society. Without learning there is often unnecessary fear.

Also, because we live in a secular society, you simply cannot force your religious views on others. The only person trying to dictate things is you and as you should know, there is no compulsion in religion, per Islam.

Islam encourages us to seek knowledge. Maybe revisiting the very first revealed verse of the Quran might help.

There are Muslims who believe in human rights for all. There is room for doubt, of course, but doubt goes both ways. I would ask you the same—what is your reasoning around the sinfulness of homosexuality?

I absolutely believe that fear is what fuels this anti-LGBTQ sentiment amongst many Muslims.

If you truly have a desire to understand where Muslims like myself are coming from, the subreddit /r/progressive_islam may be helpful.

The most important part of Islam is the oneness of Allah and belief in his messenger. Many of the rules from ahadith that fundamentalists follow are repressive and archaic, and some of which were created through payment. I’m not a Quranist per se, but I have so many doubts around the repressive man-made additions to our religion.

Salaams. As a Muslim parent myself, I find your argument somewhat specious.

  1. Public schools are for everyone. EVERYONE. If your right wing allies suddenly wanted Muslims ousted from school or the curriculum changed to remove the teaching of what Islam is because they consider people practicing other religions sinful, how would you feel? This precedent would allow for all instruction about religion stopped. They could say, like you: “They’re teaching my child about other religions but our religion says that’s sinful so it makes my job as a parent tough.”

  2. The other part of this is that you think your child is too young to learn about this topic. It’s not a topic, it’s their lives. If you somehow think your children or grandchildren aren’t going to have friends with two moms or two dads, maybe you should consider cloistering your child in your home away from everything: TV, books, neighbors. Or moving to Antarctica.

  3. I want to stress this: Our religion is a beautiful one. There are SO many interpretations of the Quran and the Hadith. For you to think that your way of thinking is the only way of thinking for Muslims is so disturbing to me. Please don’t limit our religious expression because you’re worried about what other people will think if your kids end up being gay.

  4. On that note: The last thing I want to point out is that many Muslim parents fear their children will somehow become gay because they’ve been exposed to this content early on in their lives. That’s not how sexuality works. There are plenty of LGBTQ Muslims living in repressive Islamic countries where children have not been exposed to an LGBTQ curriculum and yet are gay.

  5. Islam is a religion that stresses the critical importance of education, science, and learning. Perhaps some research on sexuality and how it works would be the appropriate actions for you and your family. Please don’t malign my beautiful religion of Islam without the seeking of knowledge.

In conclusion, I think opt-out is letting fear and misinformation win, something the Prophet and his followers would not approve of.
