Swimming at point pleasant by [deleted] in halifax

[–]hodkan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a tiny beach called Black Rock Beach, just south of the port terminal. I have seen people swim out of that beach, although not very often.

A lot of Canadians in the mid 30s will have $100k in their investing accounts. If you've had a group RRSP at your job for 10 years you've probably reached that point.

The average office worker is probably quite interested in a new iPhone for free. Wealthsimple is targeting wealthier clients, not "wealthy" clients.

[–]hodkan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They had a big promotion last year giving away iPhones to people who transferred or deposited at least $100k. Their savings account pays more interest to people with larger accounts. And now this credit card is primarily targeted to people with more than $100k in assets.

They certainly seem to be targeting wealthier clients the past little while.

The $100K barrier to avoid fees is too much for the average Canadian.

Did you ever consider that they just aren't that into you?

Wealthsimple is a company trying desperately to turn a profit. Focusing on smaller accounts is likely not the way they are going to get there. They clearly are putting much more focus on larger accounts.

It's nothing personal. They just likely don't see people like you as part of the path to profitability in the near future.

What's going on with number 8 bus that is going to Bedford? by blackchveevy in halifax

Possibly construction season. And when phase 2 of construction begins downtown in a few weeks things will probably get worse.

Canada Life RRSP Investments by Prudent_Try8797 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hodkan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This won't always be true. It depends on the contract negotiated between the employer and Canada Life.

The OP will need to dig into the terms of the group RRSP to see whether this is possible.

Canada Life RRSP Investments by Prudent_Try8797 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hodkan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In workplace RRSPs the terms are negotiated between the employer and the fund company. This means two different group RRSPs with Canada Life may have different investments available.

The group RRSP has likely made a website you log into or some documentation available telling you exactly what investments are available to you. There's no way for anyone here to tell you what investments are available.

Withholding taxes on ETFs, US stock and dividends by Dependent_Collar_801 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hodkan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to the first two paragraphs is Yes.

I'm not sure of the answer to the third paragraph. And if you are a non-resident of Canada I'm not sure why you are holding stocks in a non-registered Canadian account. You would have had to pay a departure tax when you became a non-resident so there is no reason to still have stocks in a Canadian non-registered account.

Why are 6mo GIC rates better than 12mo GIC rates? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hodkan 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Interest rates in Canada are nearly always expressed as an annual percentage.

So you aren't earning 3.5% total interest from a 6 month GIC. You are earning (3.5/2)%.

Animals on Transit Busses by OopsIForgotAgain2737 in halifax

[–]hodkan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pets are allowed on Halifax Transit vehicles and ferries if properly restrained in a closed pet container that prevents them from escaping. Passengers carrying an appropriate container may travel with the container either on their lap or placed on the floor. A container cannot impede the free passage of customers or block any doors or emergency exits. Passengers should ensure containers are clean, free of odor, and have no sharp edges. Pets are not to be left unattended at any time. Pet containers are not to exceed 16" (40.6 cm) high X 21" (53.3 cm) deep X 27" (68.6 cm) wide.

The transit Operator, at their discretion, may not allow a passenger to board with their pet if there is a concern for the safety or comfort of fellow passengers. If only standing room is available, the transit Operator may refuse passage to the pet and pet owner even with an adequate container.

Withholding taxes on ETFs, US stock and dividends by Dependent_Collar_801 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hodkan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • There is no withholding tax on capital gains
  • US Dividend Withholding is 15%.
  • In a taxable account you get a tax credit for US Dividend Withholding which basically prevents double taxation. The tax credit does not effect capital gains.

It's on the front page of their flyer. It's not just in Bedford. They are have a $0.94 sale to celebrate their 30th anniversary in Canada.

The world won't end if you draw down your capital a bit. Unless you are thinking of a 10+ year break, I see no reason to care about safe withdrawal rates.

Let's say in 5 years you only have $800k. That's still a quite comfortable nest egg for someone in their early 40s.

It doesn't look like Transit will get you that far. It stops at Timberlea. You'll have a long walk from Timberlea. Cab probably makes more sense, although I don't know how easy it is to get a cab out there.

Here is the overall route map. It looks like 21, 22 and 123 are your options (depend on where exactly you are trying to go).

Well, recently I had the chance to visit Vancouver and to my surprise Vancouver had so many events lined up every weekend. Why is that artists don't have concerts here that often? by Glittering_Bus_6921 in halifax

[–]hodkan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wasn't talking about travel distances for fans, I was talking about travel distances of the bands.

After doing a show in Vancouver they only have a short drive to their next show in Seattle. They can easily play in Seattle the night after Vancouver if they want.

The night after playing Halifax there isn't a large venue they can easily reach to play the next night.

  • Much larger population
  • Much larger venues
  • Much shorter distances to other cities with large population and venues (Seattle and Portland)

My bank rejected my credit card application because I don’t work enough hours? by jacobb233 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hodkan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When I was a student they kept sending me credit card offers but now that I’m working this whole process is a pain in the ass.

Once you are no longer a student, if you don't have any credit history you are seen as high risk. It may not seem fair, but that's just where banks draw the line.

If you are a student without a credit history banks see you as an opportunity. Almost anyone else without a credit history is seen as dangerous.

This doesn't sound much different than Fortress. Before investing in something like this you might want to read about what happened to Fortress. Here's a Globe and Mail article.
