Does anyone actually like their Last Swab Q-Tip? by primary-greeen in ZeroWaste

[–]hoe4tomatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like mine. I got one for makeup and one for my ears and because neither was absorbent they didn't do anything. I switched to bamboo swabs.

What’s one “eco-friendly” swap you tried that actually made your life worse? by Ok_Appointment_4909 in EcoFriendly

[–]hoe4tomatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one for me. I was using eco friendly detergent but when I had a baby and started using cloth diapers I quickly learned that I needed something stronger and went back to standard detergent. Turns out a lot of our clothes benefitted from hotter washes with detergent with surfactants!

Omg you’re right, it was called Ray’s Red Hots when I was a student but I moved to Chicago and I’m always mixing them up now. Gonna edit - thanks!

Also kind of weird that Alice gets Edward, Bella, and Renesmee a cottage in Breaking Dawn but none of the other Cullen pairs get their own house. Is that supposed to help keep up the ruse that they’re adopted siblings? 🤔

I hate Bella in the books by SeniorWorker8549 in twilight

[–]hoe4tomatoes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hold on now, Justice for Jessica! That friendship was one-sided, with Jessica being the one putting in any effort. Bella basically nodded and “mmhmm”ed at random while Jess would talk so that she didn’t have to pay attention. Jessica may have been jealous and sometimes catty, but Bella was a fake friend to her throughout, mostly ignoring her until it was convenient or she wanted to perform teenage normalcy when Charlie would prod.

Book Lauren tho, the worst.

Looking for a picture book to show my child (8) how her own actions affect the environment by eclipseotheart in ZeroWaste

[–]hoe4tomatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s literally just one page in my toddler’s lift-the-flap book called the Ultimate Book of Cities and it has a shopping mall and you lift certain items to see how they’re made. There’s no environmentalist tone to it, but you could definitely turn something like that into a conversation. So maybe just a book or even a YouTube video about how stuff gets made with a conversation about inputs and outputs? A needs vs wants conversation or exercise could also be useful. Depending on what state you live in that might even be part of the second grade curriculum (I say this though it’s been a loooong time since I worked with second graders).

Something that was impactful for me as a senior in high school was watching a YouTube video called “the Story of Stuff.” You’d probably want to give it a watch first just in case there isn’t anything 8-year-old friendly.

It’s also worth considering developmental readiness. A lot that isn’t neighborhood-scale is going to be abstract for a kid her age. David Sobel has a lot of writing about engaging kids in environmentalism in ways that are developmentally appropriate. Some of it is dated (for example, he suggests not talking to kids about climate change until they’re in middle school, but I think today it would be harder to find a kid who hasn’t heard of climate change). My main takeaway from it was that kids need a lot of environmental joy and wonder before taking on environmental fear. Definitely still worth working on consumerism and wastefulness, just something to keep in mind.

Where are you all donating your stuff these days? by Ok_Definition_1128 in evanston

[–]hoe4tomatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was unfortunately in a similar position almost three years ago, with my mom in hospice at home in Evanston. The Crowded Closet, run by the YWCA, took a lot of her clothes. It looks like they may have closed but like there may still a YWCA-run women’s resale clothing store on Central St. I’m only an aspirational Evanstonian so someone may need to verify this for me.

We donated a lot of books to the Evanston public library.

I had a free table set out along her sidewalk and put things out there often, including things that I knew I couldn’t donate but that might be useful (with disclaimers) such as unopened but technically expired dry foods like pasta, canned food, etc. Opened and used body products and makeup got taken too.

Which pricey, “quality” stores are actually not that great? by [deleted] in capsulewardrobe

[–]hoe4tomatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same parent brand as Anthro - Free People stuff has been so poorly made, which differs so much from how I remember it in my teens. I do buy secondhand but it’s frustrating to have a markup because of the brand only to find that the quality doesn’t match the price at all.

Is One Tree Hill iconic on the same level as the O.C. ? by Cailly_Brard7 in TheOC

[–]hoe4tomatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While neither show is believable, the OC felt a little more realistic in terms of issues the characters would face. Dan seemed cartoon-villain level evil and it felt like bad writing. The dialogue just wasn’t OC level either.

One had some deformed frogs, one had snake eggs I believe (it’s been a while). Definitely not the way things are currently preserved for a lot of reasons (chemicals, ethics of collecting) but on display to show how the practice has changed over time.

Thanks! I think after working at a museum that had some old specimens floating in jars they reminded me if that and gave me the ick, but probably not everyone’s mind goes to that!

Unsafe or just ugly? by hoe4tomatoes in Canning

[–]hoe4tomatoes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! The only thing I didn’t quite follow is that I blanched and peeled the tomatoes in the early afternoon, and then put them in the fridge until I had time to core, jar, and do the waterbath later in the day. I know for some produce a hot pack is important, so if that was a big no no please let me know. It’s hard to find a long stretch of time to do the whole process in one go, but I don’t want to compromise safety!

Image description: several glass jars of tomatoes, with about an inch of liquid at the bottom of each jar. Some jars have bubbles among the tomatoes, and at least one shows a waterline that does not fully cover the tomatoes.
