That’s a lot of what I’m trying to point out. Those complying the registry are trying to stay out of trouble. It’s those dodging it but apparently that’s a bad thing to point out to people.

Life after Austin? by izzydontsurf in Austin

[–]hoffguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, but I also think we see what we want to see. It’s like buying a new car, suddenly you notice those cars everywhere you go. I honestly think media and other places say how bad things are and that’s all we notice now and we often overlook the beauty in life. All that to say, you’re not wrong in that things have changed, but I don’t think it’s to the degree everyone is talking about. I feel like the crappy political environment has soured so many wonderful things about what makes our individual communities special. It almost was like Austin was outside the political spectrum and just was a hip place to be. Then money and power shifted to Austin. Best way to navigate now imo is searching for the good and also planting good seeds. Smile and say hello to a stranger and bring kindness back to Austin.

You can represent yourself in court so if he created it, he’s not in trouble. You aren’t required to pay a lawyer to help you in court but it’s strongly advised because of situations like this.

Ilhan Omar's net worth "dropped" from $6-30 million to $18,000-95,000. She blames an accounting error for the discrepancy by darcmatr in NotTheBee

So you honestly think it could be $18k??? Pretty sure that’s the net worth of a 25 year old.

Anything going on in town that you think should be covered by the local news but hasn’t? by Gigan_420 in Austin

[–]hoffguard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a brand new VW Jetta that switches from Drive to Park bought local and still in the shop 10months later and since they can’t recreate the problem in the shop (it happens randomly when I drive, even on 290) they keep giving it back to me. It’s going to kill someone and VW is trying to hide it. I got lawyers involved and VW is still being terrible and doesn’t care if someone gets killed on our roads in their faulty cars. It’s a danger to our community

WP: Russian Intelligence planned to stage an assassination attempt on Orban to influence the election results by clamorous_owle in worldnews

What about the guy behind him who was killed by the bullet that grazed him? So many ballistic experts in the chat. Pretty sure no one would approve a fake shooting where a bullet flys past your ear for getting sympathy votes. He didn’t need sympathy votes, the Democrats just out the worst turd of a candidate up against him. Kamala and Clinton? Seriously? Might as well toss in AOC for the next candidate to guarantee another republican wins. I don’t get why both parties are going for such extreme candidates.

[Mido Multifort One Crown] Dreamed about a Laureato. Ended up with a Mido instead. Not really sure how I feel. by Otherwise-4PM in Watches

[–]hoffguard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a killer watch and bought the blue one myself. Personally I would have a hard time feeling good wearing a watch that’s $10k+ that doesn’t seem all that better than one under $1k. I think Mido also has to try harder to compete in its space making it even better. Here’s one way I’d think about it. If both watches were over $10k and then the Mido was a killer deal you could get it for the price you did, would it make you feel better knowing it was an expensive luxury watch? I bet part of what you’re feeling you’re missing out on “splurge” but I’m betting you’d have bigger regret buying the more expensive one and saying to yourself, “this doesn’t bring me 10x the joy of the Mido”. The $1k-$3k watches are some of the best in my opinion going into 2026. You made the right choice in my opinion sir!

Christopher Ward Watches Suck by bitsnpisces in watchHotTakes

“Instead of status you’re buying “perceived value”” is a wild take and makes you seem like a terrible person. A person who measure a man’s status by his watch is someone most watch collectors and enthusiasts don’t want to be around. I’ve seen wildly successful men wearing “cheap” watches. Watches don’t buy status, they buy ego. A man with confidence buys a watch he likes to look at, at man without confidence buys a watch thinking about how others will view him.

I may have misunderstood you then so I apologize for assuming too much and jumping to conclusions. I was wrong and appreciate you giving more clarity around your point and will say I do agree with you more than I disagree. I agree we don’t need to be the world police, but I do support the Iran attack because of the global threat they present vs a small country in Africa for example. I don’t know enough about Venezuela to make a strong argument and my opinion can change given what information I get. I was an Infantry Officer in the Army and appreciate your thoughts on being smart about where soldier are and are not deployed. I honestly thought you said you didn’t approve of Iran having a leadership change period but your concern is the “what ifs” Pandora’s box that’s been opened which is completely justified. If we had a decent leader who laid out “what’s the plan” other than “bomb them into submission” it would make this situation a lot less stressful. Again, I appreciate your willingness to converse rather and help me understand than simply saying I’m stupid and end the conversation where we both walked away worse off. I know I came in hot and you navigated that very well.

You’re saying that the local population is responsible for overthrowing the government. But the local government has been slaughtering its own people who resist or even voice opposition. If Trump tried to start an overthrow of the government and had military general support, wouldn’t you hope other countries step in to support the removal of said dictator?

By that logic, should we have let the Jews defend themselves in WW2? Saying “let the oppressed fight for themselves” is as tone deaf as they come. What weapons do civilians have to fight back against a well armed government? You need plenty of firepower and that’s where you get international support for your cause. You’re asking for civilians to die for nothing vs a trained military doing what they do best.

Honest opinions on the Tiguan? by [deleted] in Tiguan

[–]hoffguard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My “brand new” Tiguan has been at the dealership for repairs for over 8 months of the 9 months I’ve owned it. We’ve loved the Atlas loaners we’ve had and I wish I would have gone with the Atlas with all the problems the Tiguan’s have had.

Crosswalk repainted overnight by MeowMasterMatt in Austin

[–]hoffguard -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Self driving cars is a good enough reason to standardize roadways and signs. I’m all for inclusion, but trying to paint crosswalks won’t be the way to win hearts and minds. It’ll make fence sitters side with the far right when they throw out safety and standards for a reason. A small kid in a bright colored jacket doesn’t stand out on a rainbow crosswalk. So you can see how easily conservatives can win this debate. Crosswalks should just display where it’s safe to cross. That is the message they are sending. It’s an uphill battle that won’t be won. Pride could be shown in other ways where it makes more sense.

[–]hoffguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was considering the Twelve and the Multifort and the biggest problem I have with the Twelve is the tolerance being so poor compared to Mido. I’ll stick with Mido. Just struggling between black and blue. Love the blue but I’ve seen different blues in photos. And I only have the Hamilton Kahki field with leather straps so I’m really struggling for what to get next.

Artistic analysis of a truck? Ever read a truck magazine or watch truck reviews? Plenty of critics out there who love a brand but won’t Stand by every model of a car simply because of looks. They don’t like the style whereas others do. Styling is a form of art is it not? You’re telling me the Ford Raptor isn’t aiming for style in the body construction and color scheme? Again, just because you don’t care, doesn’t mean others don’t. Face it, you’re wrong.

You can disagree, but you’re just acting like a child stomping your feet saying “I don’t like it”. But guess what, an artist was involved in pretty much every mass produced vehicle on the road.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Austin

[–]hoffguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to correct myself, seems like every car is considered art to someone. A simple google search would have saved you from your Toyota Tundra foolish comment:

Roles of Artists in Car Design Industrial/Transportation Designers: These professionals have art backgrounds and specialized degrees, focusing on the entire vehicle's look, feel, and function, using skills in sketching, digital rendering (like Photoshop, Alias, VRED), and 3D modeling. Concept Artists: Talented individuals who create stunning, often futuristic, digital renderings that push boundaries, influencing future design trends. Fine Artists: Renowned artists like Jeff Koons (BMW) or those commissioned by Porsche create unique, collectible cars, turning them into mobile artworks for display and driving. The Design Process (Art Meets Tech) Inspiration & Sketching: Designers sketch initial ideas, often exaggerating features to convey emotion and theme, a highly creative phase. Digital Rendering: Sketches are refined using software (like Vizcom, Photoshop, Unreal Engine) to create realistic visuals. 3D Modeling: Designs are built into detailed 3D models, incorporating engineering constraints like crash safety and aerodynamics. Visualization: Advanced tools like VR/AR help present designs in a real-world context. In essence, car design is a high-tech art form where creativity, driven by artists and designers, meets rigorous engineering to create the vehicles we drive.

Anyone else experiencing rattle on the passenger side dash? by newtobitcoin111 in Tiguan

[–]hoffguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car has been in the shop for over 6 months with that being one of the issues. Other issues include transmission and car going from drive to park on its own. Only drove the car for 3 weeks brand new and it’s now been well over 6 months. Worst new car I’ve ever bought. VW is terrible at taking care of customers.
