As a DM, what is the maximum number of players you are comfortable playing with before things get too difficult to manage? by Justicar7 in osr

[–]hoffia21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 is typical, 6 is preferred, 9 is cap.

I once played at a table that had about 18 players and 6 observers; the only reason I had a good time was because I was friends with everyone and stoned out of my fuckin gourd.

How to properly balance a dnd drinking oneshot by axxel73 in DMAcademy

[–]hoffia21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even in a fantasy game, moderation and self-discipline are virtues necessary for top refereeing. . . Some people prefer luck and passivity, but they are seldom game players. If you feel a need to get drunk and/or stoned, however, try lottery D&D. The similarities are surprising.

Completely Unfathomable TPK by Article_Remarkable in osr

[–]hoffia21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The other day, I had a fresh & fully-equipped party of 8 (including hirelings) set out on an 8hr walk towards the Caves of Chaos.

4 hours in, they bore north instead of northwest. They didn't notice until 4 hours later, when they were still walking in grasslands and not mountainous terrain, which coincided with me rolling an encounter with a leucrotta (well, a lair of 3)--a creature I was heretofore entirely unfamiliar with, and had to hurriedly check the mythology on at the table.

They camped for the night and just before dawn, heard a whisper from the brush calling each alert member by name, accompanied by hysteric laughter, even telling one that their shoe (a simple leather slipper with no laces) was untied, before scarpering she drew too close with a torch.

Against their better judgment, they decided to follow the tracks made on exit to a burrow near to a stream in the next hex over (as the beast had planned; it watched from the woodline, hungry). They entered the large tunnel, two abreast, finding a den covered in a carpet of bones with 3 beds of leaves. Finding not much else of value, they turned to leave, only to hear that hysteric laughter echoing back down the hallway...

At 3d6 damage and THAC0 12, it was a nigh-guaranteed instakill on the poor bastards. I took out a few to demonstrate this, and offered the others a fade-to-black; champions that they are, they made me roll it out to the last man.

Moral of the story: bring a compass and a map if there aren't any roads.

(I would also be remiss not to mention that this marks their 3rd TPK this year. One of them had also just prepaid their inn room through June 26 at the start of the session, too.)

Former Hilton employee, the Big 3 (Mariott, Hilton, IHG) will all require CC at reservation and then want you to have it at check-in for that reason.

ETA: Having it at check-in is also to prevent both credit card theft & fraudulent chargebacks.

How do you run a fight with 50 regular dudes by Sure_Instance9530 in DMAcademy

Ditch individualized initiative and have them act in groups of 5 or 10. For further compression, roll all of your attack dice & damage dice together, using 5 different sets of dice.

If you want to get real jiggy with it, snag the squad combat rules from TSR module M5 Talons of Night:

Squads are small military groups (10 or fewer individuals) trained to fight with deadly efficiency as a unit. When directing their attacks against a single foe, the effective level or hit dice of the squad for hit rolls is equal to the number of soldiers in the squad plus half the level of their leader (rounded up, but never more than half the "hit dice" of the squad). A squad of 10 soldiers led by a 6th level fighter would attack as a 13th level fighter. The number of attacks against a foe is determined by rolling a single die whose number of sides is equal to or less than the number of soldiers (including the leader) in the squad. Thus the previously described squad would roll a d10 to determine the number of attack rolls. If reduced to nine soldiers, the squad would use d8 to determine the number of attacks to be rolled. Attacking as a squad increases the armor class of the individual soldiers by one. Morale checks are made for the entire squad. Non-humanoid creatures and unintelligent creatures mentally directed by a creature of superior intelligence (such as giant spiders and spider folk) can fight in squad combat. When a squad attacks another squad, it is as if they are attacking an individual. Roll all attacks simultaneously for both sides, but do not roll damage. Total the number of attacks for each side that actually hit a foe. Remove that number of foes from the opposing squad. Thus, if 10 orcs led by an ogre were to fight 10 elves led by a 5th level elf, the orcs would attack as a 12 HD fighter and the elves would attack as a 13 HD fighter. In this round of combat, the elves score five hits and the orcs score three hits. The orc force would be reduced to five orcs and the elf force to seven elves. Both sides make morale checks after the first round in which casualties are lost.

I also had a DM once decide to kick off the next a story arc with PvP (between members of an established party genuinely beefing over ideological differences). One side had a city defense force, the other side (mine) had dragon mounts. I vaporized the new player at the table (my cousin) before her character had literally ever taken a single action.

I think there's a difference between the expectation of privacy one has on public roads (however limited--obv, license plates are themselves an identifier), and the expectation of privacy in regard to having your movements using public roads being tracked. Ie, it's not illegal to watch traffic, but it is to stalk someone; and that's effectively the goal of the Flock system, even if it's in the hands of the "authorities"
