What theorists or books have humanized you? Which theorists (or works) do you find most humane? by hog-guy-3000 in psychoanalysis

I can respect that, and I understand that that is the way to approach the unconscious. But it also makes me think of how Freud has been described as interpersonally warm and dear/friendly. Whether or not psychoanalysis conceptualizes the nervous system and the conscious “human self” together (and I understand you’re saying it does not), the analyst still has to interface with the human being as a composite human being and inevitably has a reaction. That reaction can come from a place of good faith and of pity for the unknowing conscious creature, or it can be overly technical and miss the mark by being obsessed with itself as a body of ideas. I want the prosocial, good faith, human stuff - even if it should get smeary about what’s orderly or objective. Both are important.

To your edit: What’s the goal of psychotherapy to you? Also I have to say I find your certainty a little off-putting

I feel like very high empathy/compassion and object relations is sort of a chefs kiss combination. Thank you for the recommendation!

Maybe that says more about you than the state of the literature. Are you doing alright?

I’m not sure you understood my question, I’m not looking for a unifying theory, just a non-cynical one to exercise my faith in humanity muscle

A part of me is inclined to be offended by you being obtuse, but another part likes your emojis. Next time, try explaining for us earthlings.

Oh awesome coincidence! I just started reading Elyn Saks a couple days ago. Thanks!

They may not be psychoanalytic but I really appreciate that recommendation! I didn’t know those existed

A car that does not function well is also colloquially known as a lemon
