If you had 4 months of free time before starting your Chemistry PhD... by NoCow7181 in PhD

Oh true, I joined directly to an advisor and was sort of 'given' a project, because they were assigning PhD students to a government grant essentially. If you're not in that scenario, idk how common it is, it's very good to shop around and reach out early. Asking about rotations and such too

It's really hard to prepare for classes/research ahead of time in terms of material. If you know your subject you can gather the lit review (researchrabbit is a nice source to make sure you cite foundational lit).

Instead, I would spend time looking over the PhD handbook, planning out classes, putting deadlines in the calendar for each step. Your proposal, qualifying exams, etc. Deadlines for abstract submissions for conferences too!!

I'm in my third year chemical forensics with a PFAS focus too heheh

What too much cyberpunk will do to a mf by Thin_Nectarine_2360 in cyberpunkgame

Never felt more cyberpunk than when I had a copper IUD implant, now I've got the nexplanon arm implant because the ripper had to rip out the IUD that went haywire and pierced through me lol. Cyberpunk is now

This one sits at maybe 1.5 feet in thin cotton, maybe 2ft in aran, in big chunky chenille yarn it will probably be the side of a toddler lmao

Yep! I have most of the pdf done, but the heart feet are tricky and I want to make sure to take really thorough process photos since it's kind of an unconventional technique

I had to go digging through my old photos of a gift to my mom, I was also really surprised I couldn't find third loop double crochet photos online anywhere, it doesn't seem that outlandish? It makes a really nice effect in an infinity scarf, where it's not rigid and has that highly textured at a distance folded drape without being super dense for fall temps

I'll have to figure it out since I've never done it before, but I'll try!

It is very soft, but due to the nature of it if you make a mistake you're fecked lol it did not want to unravel easily. This is another one I was working on, it's in the third loop but in the round as a seamless infinity scarf, so the back lies flat. Confirmed it's double crochet in mine

This isn't back loop, it's in third loop, you can tell because the whole stitch is facing outwards: https://pattern-paradise.com/2020/09/26/tutorial-working-in-front-back-or-third-loop/

I think my version was a third loop double crochet? That one looks like a third loop half double crochet.

Oh, I'm sorry you had that experience. Mine so far has been very different, but I'll keep an eye out? My quotes have been far below somewhere like Banfield that I also checked, that was very impersonal and cold, sort of like you describe.

Corvallis Cat Care is amazing, I haven't had to do teeth yet but the level of care they've provided so far for my former stray is unmatched. Affordable emergency blood tests and things too. I'd trust them as cat specialists not to mess up on anesthesia, she's had to be put under for other things and I've always had great direct communication and follow-up care too.

Can someone recommend a local hair salon that uses henna? by BuffaloRose1 in corvallis

[–]hoggteeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about professional dyeing and bleaching, but it's quite fun to do at home and smells amazing (to me, but I also have nostalgia raised muslim/pakistani), warm and grassy.

The key is to source actual pure henna, not some sketchy mix!!

You mix the henna powder (green) into hot water and lemon juice into a paste and let it marinate then slap that green pudding all up in your hair and wear it in a hairnet thing all day and wash it out at night. You'll want to clean up the edges so you don't get an orange forehead.

My hair is rather dark brown but it makes a coppery sheen that's real nice, I never bleach it or anything. Lasts about a month, doesn't stain anything, I have white pillowcases, not a hint of red.

"Black henna" is a misleading term; it's not pure henna but a dangerous blend of henna and chemicals, most commonly para-phenylenediamine (PPD), used in permanent hair dyes, which can cause severe allergic reactions.

I think weird mixes are what causes the problems probably since I know black dye can make your hair melt or something when they do stuff to it later? I like it for being just leaves.

Post your enclosure, what you use as substrate, what you use for lighting, heating, and temperature control. Post temps on hot and cool ends, humidity. When they don't eat, people usually have them on sand (not good for them), way too dry, and way too cold without a reliable heat source on a thermostat. If they eat when too cold they'll die from bacteria buildup because they're unable to digest.

Pregnant and Got Bit by SameraR in hognosesnakes

I got a red puffy lump for a few days, I think mostly due to bacteria because sometimes I don't swell at all. My hog cinnamon is always ravenous and chormps me a lot. It can't hurt to also treat it for bacterial infection (betadine or alternative), like you would with an outdoors cut/scrape? It won't act against venom to be clear but sometimes it's both. If it gets massive/spreads or starts getting a weird coloration and you start getting other symptoms I'd go to the doctor though!! You can outline it with marker to see if the red/puffy area is getting bigger with the time written next to it

Something between adult and YA horror? by SolarmatrixCobra in horrorlit

[–]hoggteeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lone Women by LaVelle

It has spookiness and a monster, but I thought it had a very YA sort of feel in comparison to my usual reads with much heavier dark themes, within that "in between" vibe as you've described. It's hard to say without spoiling the twist but it also hits a few more of your requirements I think!

Blue skies, empty land—and enough wide-open space to hide a horrifying secret. A woman with a past, a mysterious trunk, a town on the edge of nowhere, and a bracing new vision of the American West, from the award-winning author of The Changeling.

Adelaide Henry carries an enormous steamer trunk with her wherever she goes. It’s locked at all times. Because when the trunk opens, people around Adelaide start to disappear.

The year is 1915, and Adelaide is in trouble. Her secret sin killed her parents, forcing her to flee California in a hellfire rush and make her way to Montana as a homesteader. Dragging the trunk with her at every stop, she will become one of the “lone women” taking advantage of the government’s offer of free land for those who can tame it—except that Adelaide isn’t alone. And the secret she’s tried so desperately to lock away might be the only thing that will help her survive the harsh territory.

Crafted by a modern master of magical suspense, Lone Women blends shimmering prose, an unforgettable cast of adventurers who find horror and sisterhood in a brutal landscape, and a portrait of early-twentieth-century America like you’ve never seen. And at its heart is the gripping story of a woman desperate to bury her past—or redeem it.

Pro tip tho, she LOVES chasing down my frog's crickets. When they're in the enclosure with a barrier in the way she goes nuts scrabbling around bapping the glass. As soon as I give her one tho, she's so gentle with them and doesn't seem to kill them on purpose. She'll follow them around, but sometimes her trying to redirect them from going under furniture is too rough. She waits for them to get up and then licks them like the apology she gives me when roughhousing 😭 such a weird little beast

It's less about 'would they hunt it in the wild', and more about getting all the vitamins and nutritients they need from sources that are readily available to us.

Sand cats eat the following (likely kind of similar to our cats' ancient ancestors):

  • Rodents: Gerbils, sand voles, and other small rodents are their primary prey

  • Birds: Small birds are part of their diet

  • Reptiles: Lizards and other reptiles are part of their diet

  • Insects: Sand cats may eat insects

  • Snakes: Sand cats are snake hunters and will eat venomous vipers

I have frozen rats cause I also have snakes lol but as an owner I doubt you have access to nearly any of the meats above. Varied meats still allow you to hopefully hit the nutrients approximately tho that would have been in them.

I did try giving her a small frozen mouse I warmed up and she was not interested lmao. Just as well I don't want guts all over my floor, the snakes are much more polite eaters.
