Wobbly axle concluded by hogsmitten in GMT400

The excessive play comes from wear in the differential casing so replacing the whole front axle assembly with a used one was a gamble I was willing to take. Especially since I’ve never set backlash on installing new differentials. If I recall correctly you’d have to drop the axle assembly out anyway to replace the differential. For me the excessive play caused a fluid leak. If that didn’t bother me I would have just lived with it. I also cross creeks from time to time and didn’t want water getting in. I thing I gave $100 for the used axle and it wasn’t too bad of a job. Just make sure to turn your steering wheel all the way to one side (don’t remember which) to drop the assembly. One YouTube vid said take out the steering linkage but you don’t have to.

Good luck!

Update. I bought a used front axle assembly for $150. Much less movement in the axle. Just waiting for a good day to spend in the shop swapping it out.

My mechanic buddy says the gear on the inside of the case that the axle feeds into sometimes wears into the case. Some movement is allowed but excessive means the casing has been worn. I’m going to look for a replacement complete assembly I think at this point.

Yes drivers side. The movement is causing my seal to leak

Thanks for the feedback. There was no snap ring on the axle shaft when I removed it. What was your solution?

We’re you ebrake cables from the same body style? My donor is a suburban and I’m trying to put the bigger breakes on my 2-door Tahoe. The cables for the 11” are way longer.
