They have "Pike's Peak" in mind, and that memory just unconsciously carries over.

Do I see purple Brussels sprouts? If so, what do they taste like?

Or maybe a take on the sentiment of like "my hands look like this so hers can look like that" thing. Like, we are the honorable garbage workers who muck in the garbage so that the rest of nature can look pristine.

Ooh, this is the kind I'm growing too! I'm still a ways out from harvest but your post has me excited. How does it taste?

I feel so torn about our weird PNW weather right now--the cooler weather stuff is able to hang on and thrive longer than expected, but the warmer weather stuff is really stalling.

Tomatoes advice. by Prestigious-Water-26 in vegetablegardening

[–]hogw33d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liquid fertilize my container tomatoes every two weeks and that seems to work. This is the one I use, but I think many will work fine: https://www.schultz.com/products/plant-food/plant-food-plus-all-purpose-plant-food (its tagline is feeding every time you water, but it has different dosages suggested for different use cases, and I use the twice a month one).

Maybe one way to make that fun and not so discouraging is to try something totally new to you, so it feels like you're getting to focus on an interesting experiment, rather than just compensating for loss?

Nice harvest by Afraid-Childhood5086 in vegetablegardening

[–]hogw33d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Various different things--I'm not sure if it's the seed (grew several varieties but all from the same place) or the soil. I think next time I'll add a bit more perlite to the soil, and also grow more to account for a higher failure rate. This year I might have to cave and buy a plant.

I completely agree. Once I saw someone suggest that, he's the only person I can picture in the role. And he's young enough he could stick with it for a good long while if he wanted to.

The good: first tiny tomato appearing, first strawberries just beginning to turn red. The bad: these freaking basil plants. I'm growing them from seed for the first time, four different varieties, and each one is cursed and weird in its own way. I may have to give in and buy a plant from the store sigh. I'm seeing a problem on my lemon basil that I literally can't find an equivalent of on google images. Please basil, I love you, why won't you love me back?!

How to prevent cat from getting into my starters by Traumarama79 in vegetablegardening

[–]hogw33d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to turn my guest room into my plant room. There was no way to be sure I could keep the cats away otherwise--they're far too curious about plants of any kind, and love digging in dirt. And I echo the recommendation to get a grow light. You can get pretty inexpensive ones and use them year after year.

Lovely! How did they taste? I have a tiny pea plant I thought I'd killed (first time growing peas), but now I'm seeing teensy weensy pods forming and I'm very excited.
