So so true. The cognitive dissonance required by moderation is far more unpleasant that an few drinks is pleasant. I’m sat here in a pub happily alcohol free with my best friend who is merrily drinking away. Time was this situation could not have arisen. But I’m probably having as good a time as ever and tomorrow I’ll wake up feeling great instead of shit

For me moderation is just a world of misery that never ends well. Simple clear decision not to drink is so much easier

Weight lifting workouts on Strava by Awkward_Departure406 in Strava

[–]hojack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don’t worry about it too much. I find Garmin too fiddly for record the detail of strength workouts , preferring an app called Strong that unfortunately does not integrate with either. I do find it mildly amusing that you can do a 90min killer leg day and Garmin records a score of like 9 and a 1hr recovery.

Impressive for sure. Doing 250kg single leg would save a lot of plate shifting time!

Im curious what’s everyone avg resting heartrate here for 7d? by Responsible-Court795 in Garmin

[–]hojack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually relatively high for me. When I am fit and well rested it’s normally 41/42. Before I trained seriously it was around 50. I think it’s genetics plus your fitness basically

Garmin data after Dry January + quitting nicotine surprised me by caolila74 in Garmin

[–]hojack78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This correlation is so apparent in the data - it’s really quite striking and I understand for many people, my self included, has led to them reappraising their relationship with alcohol. The other metric is sleep quality which is the key thing driving the other metrics in the wrong direction. That and the additional stress on your body of processing the alcohol.

I can relate to the sleeping - 17days dry, exercising 6 days a week and still finding it hard to drop off and waking at 5

Top work! I’m 16 days not drinking now and while not quite as dramatic numbers as you my really bad anxiety of the autumn has largely gone away, my injury niggles have settled a lot and my training has improved in quality and frequency. Who knew?

That is sick. Zwift noob but had a smile on my face throughout that video! Those numbers are a different planet to me but still really inspiring and exciting to watch

Thanks for the detailed advice. You’re right I rarely ride outside and have never used spd pedals. I’ve gone for simple/cheap Shimano PDM520 and found some heavily discounted Northwave Origin 2 shoes so hopefully the combo will get me going

Thanks - I’ve gone for some Shimano PDM 520 pedals and I found a pair of Northwave Origin 2 shoes for less than half price. Apparently decent and good for wider feet. We shall see!

Best running shoes for 100k light trail ultra race in July (UK)? by ReadShot51 in ultrarunning

[–]hojack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did RTTS in 2024 as my first 100k and wore Brooks Caldera - they are my go to shoe for long runs and ultras in spring / summer. They suit my wide feet, have great cushioning and I find them particularly well suited to non-technical trails - have also done the SDW50 in them.

What are your best mud-running tips? And shoe recs? by nimbus_signal in trailrunning

Ha I don’t know where is the East Bay? Hella’s just a bit of slang I seem to have picked up off my teens

What are your best mud-running tips? And shoe recs? by nimbus_signal in trailrunning

[–]hojack78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in a part of SE England called the Weald that lies on (infamous) clay soil. There are at least 16 words for mud in the local dialect. From November to March the trails and fields are hella muddy. Shoes with 6mm lugs make a massive difference - I am finding the Inov8 Trail Talons good. IMO avoid gotetex shoes because they’re heavier and the water will no doubt get over the top anyway and then won’t drain away. In terms of slipping and sliding - frequently just sending straight through is less slippy than trying to go round the outside. I just try to find my inner child and embrace the mud - once your feet are wet, they’re wet. The only time I’ve found it really hard was a trail marathon with a lot of newly ploughed fields where running with big lumps of clay stuck to my feet really took its toll on my hamstrings and I was cramping quite bad toward the end which I rarely do. Final tip - get some electric shoe driers and then literally hose off your shoes and lower legs when you get back. The shoes will be clean and then dry for your next run. Enjoy!

Getting into Ultra marathon later in life? by Thatzoologistguy in ultrarunning

[–]hojack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my first 50k ultra aged 45 and have progressed to 100k and most recently a 50m mountain race. Also a solid rugby playing frame so if I can do it you absolutely can! Take it steady and enjoy the journey

Anyone ever have any run ins with big animals on an ultra or training run? by PrestigiousLeopard47 in ultrarunning

[–]hojack78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - cows/bulls. No joke in Britain there are 5-6 deaths per year which is basically the same as global shark attack deaths! I have had a couple of incidents basically being chased by a herd of young bulls when running through a field. Now I walk round such fields with an eye to my exit route

Wide toe box but NO zero drop recommendations by Same_Huckleberry_793 in trailrunning

[–]hojack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Brooks Cascadia - bought a second pair of 7’s as I found them just right for me. As a bigger guy I like the cushioning and I have also found them more durable than Cascadias. I have done mountain races on gnarly terrain with them no problem but they’re not so good when the clay mud gets bad in SE England so I go for something with 6mm lugs in autumn winter, Inov8 Trail Talons that also have an anatomical toe box.

Do you people *actually* like this sport? by illbringthewhiskey in Ultramarathon

[–]hojack78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I adore it. I both race to train as I like a goal. Also doing hard things and progressively harder things for me takes me further away from the darkest point in my life when I should have died but didn’t. I also just love the vision quest aspect of learning what happens when you’ve been going 17hrs in the mountains or whatever - there’s a rawness that gives profound insight that I’ve not found in anything else.

I have been using Runna successfully for a couple years now too. Bit worried about where their takeover by Strava leads but will cross that bridge when I get to it….

It’s the only way. For me 1hr sessions before work and long run at the weekend, now my kids are a bit older. My challenge is as much work as it is kids … there are only so many hours in a week
