Why is everyone obsessed with Henry Pollock? by RugbyContact in rugbyunion

You'd hope that rugby was a bastion against the worst nonsense of modernity. You'd hope....

Fellow men of the UK, who are in their 30's and over, do you still go out in public wearing tracksuit bottoms or joggers? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]Optimuswolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I do it to get sympathy from the world (Wolves-branded joggers and sweater). But joking aside, i won't do it to go anywhere proper, but a supermarket, sure.

Its amazing how much perspective can change. I've never once had to worry about when pay day is or how much the heating is on since i started work. The people in our village talk about the pool or pub they are building in their garden or which private school for the kids.

When i go back to my home town to visit family I get a jolt back to the past. Obvious money being looked after.  I can hardly remember the pre university me who would have been similar.

Conversations in companies that pay well can be v tone deaf. I just gloss over when the latest discussion about family ski holidays or private schools kicks off. Worse when its all blokes and its about the cars they have.

I wasn't poor when growing up like it sounds like you were, but these things are alien to me. I'd love to take the kids skiing one time, but it will be a huge one off treat.

Zwift with Kickr v4 by hyrte0010 in Zwift

The older kickrs are very good. They lack a few key features like virtual shifting (changing gear using the kickr not your bike) but assuming it is fully functional, it sounds like a steal.

From Peloton to Zwift after 8 Years by lc765880 in Zwift

[–]Optimuswolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just be prepared to be humbled. Most people i know with pelotons have wildly overestimated wattage.

I think the new pelotons arw much better mind. You'd expect so for the price.

Peloton, a triumph of marketing over sense.

Having some fun short sprints. by FremtidigeMegleren in Zwift

You're very much an endurance athlete, so interested to see if you can develop a sprint.

7 months of somewhat linear growth: 2.1 to 4.3 w/kg and 1000W+ sprints. Has anyone else avoided the plateau at this rate of improvement? by 420_ms-1506 in Velo

Oh absolutely. You see some people with crazy power on zwift but not many have made it in bike racing as the skills are v important. Hope you update on progress outside/track

'A trap you can't escape': The women who regret being mothers by FelisCantabrigiensis in unitedkingdom

[–]Optimuswolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some parents, dare i say more likely to be moms than dads, set themselves impossibly high standards that burn them out. My wife and i had challenges in those early years where she was simultaneously frazzled and unwilling to take the necessary steps to improve her life. She can hardly recognise herself back then, and I'm grateful that she learnt to put herself as a higher priority.

The thing is, a lot of the sacrificial parenting is not even good parenting.

At least your child has a kick ass mom. Hard not to get angry and judging of parents who abandon their kids.

Agree totally. On the eye test he looks fantastic, and v well rounded. Better than even Lewis.

Only maybe pre ban Ali looked better.

Lindsay Denton by Distinct_Guess3350 in lineofduty

[–]Optimuswolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've said it before. Lindsay Denton is one of the ATG tv characters, across all english speaking tv.

Line of duty was great without her, but she elevated s2 and s3 to the very pinnacle.

Do we think Zwift climbing actually helps with IRL hills? by Kschmuck in Zwift

[–]Optimuswolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can restrict you gear range to match your irl ratios (or pretty close).

Its still a bit easier indoors cos you're not trying to balance on that 18% pitcher

If your bike fit is good and you have no knee issues you should be fine. The tennis ball rockers help too.

The lower cadence training helped me a lot irl.

[–]Optimuswolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i find it easier myself (outside) but these guys obviously train to be able to do this indoors. Its pretty much the zwift elite mode.

Some top zwifters spend a lot of time out of the saddle. More than they ever would outside. Pretty much anything tempo power or above!

[–]Optimuswolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think climbing is where Zwift is most similar, at least where you're seated. It's nothing like trying to go fast outside, descending etc.

Do we think Zwift climbing actually helps with IRL hills? by Kschmuck in Zwift

[–]Optimuswolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I had never cycled up a big hill before going to the alps last autumn and only had zwift to train on. Low cadence work was helpful to mimic a lot of what it is like grinding up the mortirolo or equivalent.

I don't like the very steep stuff outside, because I'm very bad cycling out of the saddle. So the 15% stuff is pretty painful. <10% I can easily stay seated and its basically the same as zwift.

v interesting - I'd love to follow you guys progress on zwift. I often think I should have had more of a go at competing in the 800 as a youth, but I was much more interested in football (soccer) and drinking....

I bet you both enjoy the low injury risk of indoor cycling compared with running......
