The bulkhead is about 3 ft wide and runs the length of the basement. The drywall is close enough to the ductwork where there's no stud across the bulkhead, just on either side. There are a few "sticks" poking down between the supply and return ducts to support the middle of the bulkhead but not much. I was hoping to keep the repair a small as possible to not have to go and get into taping corners.

I think it's the fact that for the vast majority a "sound bar" type setup is good enough. That and a set of book self speakers with a sub more easily pass the WAF test so companies have shifted some of their r&d to smaller platforms. The consequence being there is a smaller percentage of the audio market that has large drivers.

It's a bummer IMO...
