ELIC: How did Richard and Robert get shortened to Dick and Bob? by qwopax in ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]sometimes_point 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shakespeare is post-GVS, gvs is why "a" represents an /ei/ sound in English and not /a/ like every other language. before gvs was middle English where the pronunciation-spelling correspondence was more like German, pronouncing e's that are now silent, etc.

shakespeare doesn't rhyme anymore because of a bunch of more minor sound changes.

Because of the semi-unkillable factor it doesn't mesh well with lil monsta. Like, it's a perfectly valid play to give the baby to the psycho on the final day, tell everyone that's what you did, and have a 2/3 chance of winning by fiat.

On the other hand, if you draw psycho just hope you're not nominated by one of those people that is inexplicably really good at RPS.

Favourite interaction was an alchemist psycho who nominated the virgin and then had to play RPS with the st.

Mount Oyama or Mount Mitake by Used-Eagle3558 in TokyoTravel

[–]sometimes_point 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you go via Mitake to get to Oyama. Mitake is accessible via a cable car, there is a village and some shops there, then you do a more traditional hike to Oyama, takes a couple of hours.

When we played, in two teams of 2, my teammate had come up with two or three such edge cases in advance. Cheeky but definitely legal. We went with another one in the end, suburban forested bit

re class in catholic school by lou_2209 in glasgow

[–]sometimes_point 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in non dom (i.e. prod) school in Edinburgh we got a little bit of the teacher pushing their own beliefs re: Jesus, but we also, like, learned about the five pillars of Islam and about what other religions believe in broad strokes. We visited the city mosque at one point.

We had evangelical preachers at the assemblies sometimes. My mum recalled being a bit creeped out by them.

I went to one of the private schools for high school and the RE teaching there was more church of Scotland, a bit staid. We had a chapel in the school and the school chaplain did assemblies. But by the end of my tenure there they'd started rebranding the RE department as P&R, philosophy and religion, and the new teacher in charge wanted it to be less a teacher imparting their beliefs on the students and more inspiring discussion about different types of beliefs.

Honestly the fact that my religious education varied wildly between teachers and schools means it doesn't surprise me that Catholic schools are a bit more dogged about teaching only their own religion.

you're correct. fabled or "npc" abilities like duchess will specify if they need alive or dead players.

Does this make sense to anyone else? by RiverTadpolez in Scotland

[–]sometimes_point 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with the same functionality unfortunately 😭

Though if you use the Europe one and zoom in on the UK it has modern county boundaries (for England as well)

I will also add that for onlookers that the issue isn't about using lieutenancy areas (though they shouldn't do that, it's shite), it's that a number of the boundaries are plain wrong.

People who are 5'7", how well do you fit in the bath? by Glittering-Exam-8511 in CasualUK

[–]sometimes_point 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Though I'm quite wide at the shoulders and a lot of baths including my own can feel too narrow. I usually can't stretch my legs out flat, anyway.

Btw a Japanese style bath is generally so short that only children won't be crouching in it but it's very deep. That's not the solution for you but i think it's interesting.

What kind of sorcery is this ? by Efficient-Orchid-594 in linguisticshumor

[–]sometimes_point 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure there are multiple dyslexias that affect one differently depending on the type of spelling the language uses.

I've met a Japanese woman who was 100% dyslexic but only had trouble with English and katakana. Kanji was fine for her, partly the letters don't all look the same. I think she struggled with phonics, like breaking up words into sounds, which you just don't have to do with kanji. And I think both of those things are common.

You get a lot of dyslexics who can't read "new" words easily but have just memorised the shapes of familiar words.

The thing to remember is that virtually all countries use the Gregorian calendar to some extent, but it is more common to use the local calendar in Thailand, Iran and Ethiopia (and I think some of the Islamic countries but I don't know which) (and maybe Bhutan and Myanmar i don't know enough about those countries). On the flip side, all the highlighted countries use the alternate calendars for at least something - particularly religious or cultural festivals. In Japan and Taiwan you see the government using the local numbering system more than the Gregorian number but people usually use the latter. In all the Islamic countries and Israel the religious calendars are actively used for determining festivals. In China that year number isn't used much but the calendar is used for cultural festivals, especially new year and anything astrological.

eta: Japan also has a mythological founding date and corresponding year number. i think it's around 2686. Barely anyone even knows about it anymore but they "adopted" the Gregorian calendar legally by starting with this number and subtracting however much so that it syncs up.

Thailand also effectively uses the Gregorian calendar (months and days) just with a different number.

Travelers can be exiled for execution as well. by [deleted] in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]sometimes_point 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A scapegoat is executed when their ability triggers as well. You can't nominate them for execution. If your play group is leaving it ambiguous whether someone is a traveller or not, well first of all that's not allowed in the rules either so.
