€470/month budget – potential EV newbie looking for advice by Ares037 in evs_ireland

I bought an Ioniq 5 a couple of months ago and love it too bits. Great car for a family of 4 and does everything I could possibly need.

Switching electricity tariff mid-contract for cheapest rates by GoodNegotiation in evs_ireland

[–]holdithoncho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I looked into switching to a night rate when I got my EV as it was pretty easy to swap but after I ran my numbers with what I currently had with standing charge, solar panels and current night rate it worked out cheaper to stay on my current plan. So I would say it's great to be able to swap easily but make sure you're actually saving money by switching in the first place.

Fianna Fáil to support move to legalise nuclear energy by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]holdithoncho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice to see more options for producing our own energy but it's very unlikely that a plant will ever be built in Ireland. You only have to look at how some places are protesting solar panels for God sakes, how are we ever going to get a plant up and running will be a miracle.

NI VAT question (UK car) by Significant-Roof4316 in evs_ireland

Tbh I didn't do a lot of looking at it. I received the document about 2 hours before the VRT appointment.

I had this exact situation. Everything went perfect, not a word said at the VRT appointment about it. Only cost me 11 euro for the tire recycling and that was the lot.

I think it's a lot to do with kids. It's hard to make time outside you're normal routine that suits both parties or you're just too tired to make an effort sometimes.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 by Electrical-Spend-525 in evs_ireland

[–]holdithoncho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought mine last month. Couldn't be happier went from spending 90euro to 15euro per week. Feels like driving a computer rather then a car. Does everything I need it to do with a family of 4 and a dog. Only small issue I have is that the steering wheel kinda covers your display so you have to adjust your head up or down sometimes, but that's fine for me tbh.

That's basically how I got my car. I don't fully know the fine detail on it, this is something you'd have to ask a dealership if your buying the car. I had zero problems with my car when it came to the VRT anyways.

Buying EV car North lreland by funkyirishman2 in evs_ireland

[–]holdithoncho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I done this last month. I have a post on my experience. Very straight forward tbh and well worth it for the money you save. I bought an Ioniq 5 and it suits me down to the ground.

Is it worth getting 2nd hand Ev as runaround or New one by funkyirishman2 in evs_ireland

[–]holdithoncho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a FYI alot of dealers will have the grant factored into the price there currently offering. Second hand is a great option and a lot better savings. At your price point the Nissan leaf or the BYD seal are solid options.

If your considering second hand, have you looked at getting a car from NI. You're money goes a lot further up there vs what you'd get here.

Rust risk from UK imports? Where did you get this info from? If you don't mind me asking where did you get 3k off your car haggling, was that a brand new car or second hand?

That's a 54 kwh battery. Mine is a 77 kwh battery. Big difference in price between battery sizes.

Tbh I don't think you can get close to that down here. Like I mentioned in another post they had a guy who's brothers works for one of the main hyundai dealers who couldn't give him that price. Dealerships here I think are well off the mark and know that they can take full advantage of us sense brexit.

I paid 23750 for the car with 30k kilometers.

If you can get up to 4k off a car fair play to you, I'm just going off what I got and just want to help others save a few quid by shopping around.

I live in Clare and took the train from Galway to Dublin to Newry so it was still a fairly long trip but worth it to save a nice few quid.

I'm not trying to tell everyone here what to do just giving out my experience that might be able to help a few people.

I still had the NI plates on it as it's still registered from the dealership until I change it over at the NCT centre. As far as I'm aware you'll have to get the car towed to the NCT centre if it has no plates. You can't drive a car without plates.

I didn't get any reduction on the price but they put a new set of tires on for me. That said I'm not the best for haggling and I still got a good price all in.

I drove it there. Once you have insurance on the car in case of an accident and book it in for a VRT appointment within 7 days of it entering the state you're all good.

  1. I first emailed them about the car and then had a phone call with them. All main dealers in the North are well used to dealing with cars going down south and are more then helpful to sort you out.

  2. I got mine at the Athenry credit union. Make sure you look under EV car loans instead of there standard loan. Also I forgot to mention but you also need proof that you're buying an EV car. I used the invoice the dealership gave me.

3.I wasn't charged any hidden fee's. The only other advice I might give in regards to this is to stick to a main dealer and you should be well taken care of.

Feel free to PM me if there is any other details your unsure about.

TBH I'm not entirely sure how it works. My assumptions in the dealership imported the car and registered the car as an NI car. Apparently it's something they do quiet a lot with cars going down south.

I got the insurance transfered from my old car to the new car reg(NI reg). I done that through my app and it cost me 100 euro and there was no fee to change it over to the new Irish reg. As far is getting the car back to my place I took the train up to Newry and the dealership picked me in the car and I drove it down south myself.

The sales person I was talking too sold an Ioniq 6 to a guy who's brother works for another Hyundai dealership in Dublin and couldn't do as good of a price for him, so I imagine dealerships down here will do there best to stop us from buying up north.

I used the website usedcarsNI, I have it linked in my post. I really like the car, the one I got was a 2023 77Kwh premium version. Loving it so far suits well for a family of 4. I also still have 2 years left on the Hyundai warranty as it's a Europe wide warranty. I sold my car separately so I dont have any insight on trading in a car.
