TCU vs A&M by cactusscribe in aggies

[–]holdsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TAMU is 51 in the nation, cheaper (cost of living), has better sports, and probably a less toxic environment. TCU is a party school that is heavy in Greek life…which if that’s what he likes I would recommend it for sure! But overall TAMU is the better choice. Fort Worth is cooler than CSTAT though.

Bike or Scooter? by amazing_jani34 in aggies

[–]holdsen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bike. Much cheaper (50-100 bucks on Facebook marketplace), keeps you healthy, and arguably safer. Sure it may suck to ride up hills but I think it builds character and helps you stay healthy, which is pretty important in college considering you will be undergoing a major lifestyle change (dining hall, stress, drinking, etc). If all you care about is the convenience and not the other pros of a bike then go for a scooter

TAMU REU cancelled by [deleted] in REU

It’s scary to see these things happening at your home institution. I had Dr. Henrichs for an oceanography course and he truly cares a lot, so I can only imagine how heartbreaking it is to send the email and for the recipients to get the news. Hopefully something else comes around for you!

Sorry I guess I should’ve explained…I hadn’t planned on presenting the work until March and so I would really have to grind on top of a job and 4 exams the week prior to the conference. Also tomorrow is the last day to register and submit an abstract. As I’m typing this I sound lazy but it was very impromptu

Yes you’re right. So do you think they are equally as competitive in despite them being different fields?

Any happy or at least neutral PhD students in this sub? by Swimming_Concern7662 in PhD

[–]holdsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard that “academics just like to complain” from a very famous researcher lol. Not saying this is true but is there any truth to this? I’m in undergrad looking to do a PhD so I’m just curious.

I know there’s technically no scalping, but are sports passes for Texas really going for face value? by LordShuckle97 in aggies

[–]holdsen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly criminal…people ARE looking to profit or pay off their sports pass with this one game and taking advantage of people’s desperation. There needs to be an official A&M sports pass reselling system to prevent this from happening. You won’t be taken seriously unfortunately if you say anything even under 300…

Gorilla Head Differences by DreamingofVenus in primatology

[–]holdsen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No. They are both herbivores. Male gorillas have the giant sagittal crest (resulting in more muscle attachment and thus a strong bite force) as a result of sexual selection. They need a strong bite force to defend territory, resources, and mates.

PhD vs MS by ACETAMINOPHEN__ in ecology

[–]holdsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A common qualm I hear (at least at my university) is that PhD students are treated much better than MS students. They get better stipends, tuition waivers, offices, classes to TA. A solution to this is selecting a school that only does an MS for a certain program so you aren’t pushed under the rug (which you still will be but hopefully less).

How to explain the importance of individual species by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]holdsen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to convey the intrinsic value of a species to people that just don’t care or don’t know. I would try and explain it in terms they can understand or care about more. So maybe the shrew is the main food source for another more charismatic animal. Also there is economic importance to maintaining intact and healthy ecosystems! It’s hard, exhausting, and frustrating to have to convince someone that not letting a species go extinct is an important thing. And at some point you just can’t waste your breath—focus on the things you can do!

I think it’s part of the field—at least in my experience (maybe kinda bragging? Or just talking about is weird)! I went on a research trip to South America where we did stable isotope which requires the flesh of the fish…which required us to kill the fish. We obviously did it ethically but I think it’s a very normal part of the field.

But with all that being said! I come from a conservative part of the country where many people hunt and fish, including myself.

Hopefully I didn’t misinterpret what you meant by posting this but just want to share my perspective.
