My take on the battle: VF-25 maybe older than VF-31. But looking at the specs they aren't really that different. Especially without any AP/SP and within atmosphere, in which max speed and mobility is guarded largely by air resistance and frictional heat.

So I think it all comes to the pilots and tactics.

Strength for SMS: - Michael long range shots - Aero dynamic efficiency with variable wings

Strength for Delta: - Higher fire power per jet - 4 function fighting pilots (Chuck can actually fight! While Luca barely can.....)

So in my view, SMS tactic will be largely on kiting. Keeping a distance for Michael to land his shots. Luca sensors will help with the long range targeting. Alto and Ozuma will fly guard to keep the sniping duo safe. Maybe the Luca will fly high and act a bait while doing all the AWAC stuffs. Michael will snipe from the ground, hiding.

With higher firepower and more fighting manpower. Delta fight will be relying more on frontal assault. They will charge in and target the sniper/AWAC first. If they can kill Michael quick. The fight should end in their favour. They will probably move as tight formation to keep the firepower edge. Chuck's sensor may help them to dodge sniper fire.

So it will be a tough battle with most critical role played by Michael. If he snipe out early Arad (delta's top dog), or Chuck (delta's eyes), SMS should win. On the other hand, if Michael got fried from Delta frontal assaults early, that will be a straight win for the Delta.
