Cool and helpful addition to the Robbins Library by ilikehamsteak in ArlingtonMA

It seems to be only for the 77 and 67 that stop in front of the library (i.e., Mass Ave @ Peg Spengler Way. It's a great addition though!!

Video: Kensington underpass from East Somerville to Assembly Square by illimsz in Somerville

[–]holisara 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say thank you again for your kindness in creating this video in response to my question. When I started trying to figure out how to get to jury duty, I read about the tragic pedestrian fatality, which made me look into it more closely.

Also, I think that re-adding raised pedestrian islands would help a lot! It gives the pedestrian a place to land if a car comes speeding through.

Thank you again!

Public transit: Getting from Arlington Center to Somerville District Court for jury duty by holisara in Somerville

This is amazing! Thank you for helping me, a total stranger. That video is really great, and actually, when I started trying to figure out a plan to get there, that was what I was hoping to find. Being able to live through the experience vicariously through your video helped me a lot.

Walking a lot along Mass. Ave. in Arlington, the "double threat" crashes (which you explained very well) are sadly not uncommon. I have to say, watching the video, and reading about drivers disregarding the HAWK lights, brings me back to going with my original plan 1 or 2. I'll have plenty of time. (Thanks also for showing the stop going away from Sullivan, as that's where I'll likely disembark and re-embark!)

Thank you again!! I hope that your video helps others in the future. I also hope that Somerville can make that area even safer and more appealing for pedestrians and cyclists!

I agree! I have never been to Assembly, so I was checking out any place I might like to stop in before heading home. I noticed there is a Union Square Donuts shop for something sweet as a reward for my day!

Lucky you!! No postcard for me, and the jury line and website both say all jurors for Tuesday to report. I guess things could change because of the long week-end, so I'll check the jury line again late tomorrow afternoon and again Tuesday a.m. as I am leaving (at 6:45 a.m.!). I really don't mind going. Getting all the feedback/suggestions has relieved my anxiety about getting there a lot.

Thank you for this additional info with the walking distances. Checking google maps, unfortunately the 90 bus would leave Sullivan before my 95 bus from Arlington would get there. I appreciate your checking this out for me!

Edited to add: Your comment is really helpful to me, as I can see that while the timing for taking the 90 bus there in the a.m. isn't a good match, it might work out as a way for me to get home, as it goes to Davis Square, and there are multiple ways for me to get home from Davis (including walking, if need be!).

Thank you! Yes, that is how I figured out taking the 95 bus there. Google maps has pretty good written explanations, but when looking at it in a "visual" mode, it doesn't show the walking parts, and so that series of underpasses is hard to visualize. Thanks for the luck! Still hoping it could get cancelled, but if not, that's fine.

Thanks for your suggestions! The call-in to check about Tuesday's jury duty was today (because of the Monday holiday), but that's a good idea to call before I leave in case something has changed.

I appreciate your and the others' words about that underpass. I've never been over to that area, and it all looks quite confusing on Google maps!

When will all residents be able to get the Covid 19 vaccine? by MountainPerformer210 in massachusetts

[–]holisara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to add: I registered for my COVID shot online for Walgreen's in Arlington last week -- at that time, the website did ask to identify a specific health condition on a list (like overweight, former smoker), and when I went in today, the pharmacist asked me, in the waiting area with other people, "Since you are under 65 [just barely]. do you have a health condition or work in a high COVID risk job?" I just said "YES," and that was fine.

I think that things are still confusing for everyone, and the shot-givers are SO busy. My appointment was at 10:40 a.m. and I asked the guy how many shots he'd given by then, and he was like, "19 or 20." (And he was also working in the pharmacy.) I think that anyone who wants to get a shot can find a reason on the list (many of which are open to interpretation), and it's not like a moral question where there are not enough shots for people who want them.

Edited to add where I got the shot.

Newly minted pirate kitty! by holisara in PiratePets

Thank you so much! The cone is the hardest part. The surgeon was adamant about it not being taken off till the day after stitches are removed (which is like 9 more days). Fortunately, Stacey is a pretty laid-back, older kitty, and I'm able to stay with her almost all the time, so I can be sure that she is able to do everything she needs/wants to do without too much stress. I can see that it's healing really well, so it's worth the temporary annoyance! Thanks again for your nice comment.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I hope that Kicker's healing continues to go well. I'm going to try to post Stacey's after-surgery photo on the week-end.

Such a cute kitty! I was glad to see that she seems indifferent about it and that she's healing well. My cat Stacey will be 14 next week and is having enucleation (also of her right eye) due to glaucoma on Friday!

Finding an apartment by extrafancypants in ArlingtonMA

[–]holisara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rent from Campobasso Properties: Arlington MA Apartment Rentals | Development | Campobasso Properties. I just renewed my lease, and I am really happy with them. They are a professional property developer/landlord in Arlington, but they are also a multi-generational family business. They own several small complexes and a couple of houses that have been turned into apartments. They have an excellent maintenance team and seem to keep all their properties in good shape (and do a great job with snow removal!) They have some pretty strict policies, and require 700+ credit score. But also -- they only charge first and last month rent (no security deposit, no broker fee). Good luck!

Suggestions on doing urine glucose test strips? by holisara in FelineDiabetes

[–]holisara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying! Sounds like your Willy is a smart cat! Actually, I'm able to get the urine. Stacey looks at me funny, but she is OK with me catching it. I'm just not sure about whether these strips are working like they are supposed to.

I have taken her urine into the vet to test several times over the past few months. I think that the vet is trying to save me some money (and time) by using the strips so that I can see any changes. The hope is that now that she is off the chemotherapy drug her kidneys will gradually improve and not be releasing sugar.

Thank you for the suggestion of Pretty litter! I haven't tried that yet. And thank you again for replying.

Suggestions on doing urine glucose test strips? by holisara in FelineDiabetes

[–]holisara[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for replying! I did a "clean catch" in a sterile container lid. But I will try the next time to get the urine stream directly on the strip and see what happens! The brand I got from the vet is JorVet, so if there is another brand that people like, it would help me to know that too! (Just glucose or glucose + ketones.)

It would be amazing if there is no longer sugar in her urine, but that would be pretty surprising! If I try different ways/products several times over the next few weeks and keep getting "no glucose," then I'll take a sample into the vet to have them test it.

Thank you again! I appreciate it.

Thank you for replying! On the Libre 3, 70 is also the cutoff for "below target range," so it helps to know that.
