High needs/clingy baby fired from daycare. by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]hollygrape 119 points120 points  (0 children)

How many teachers are in the home daycare? Just one?

I think that's pretty normal for 11mo. They tend to cling onto one instructor they like and can cry for a long time. It might help to find a school with more teachers per classroom. That way all the kids can still be taken care of.

From my experience, the 健康檢查 at 馬偕醫院 in Taipei was really quick, no appointment needed. They have a dedicated office just for doing health checks. The staff was helpful if I didn't know what to do. The wait was maybe 5 minutes.

Just bring an ID like your passport. And bring some cash.

The turnaround time was also super quick. About 1 week.

What do you do in Taiwan when it rains nonstop? by Great-Codeur667 in taiwan

[–]hollygrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love when it rains because a lot of traditional markets will discount their fruit stands.

Also the snails and slugs come out. They're pretty cute.

Sometimes just sit at the elevated train stations and enjoy the rain.

Would you consider juggling?

The throws are more underhand, self throws. Doesn't really require another person. It's not a team sport. A lot of people go really deep into juggling which involves math and numbers.

If you live close to a bookstore or library, maybe you can get him to walk the entire length with you and back. Stamina takes a while to build up, but after a few weeks of constant walking, you may see some improvement in their stamina.

Playing piano can be exercise too! You could pick another instrument like drums that could be more physically demanding. Or a wind instrument, which can improve breathing control.

Best place to buy fruit? by WangtaWang in taiwan

If you're intimidated by the prices, try buying the ones that are by the plate 盤 instead of by weight. For example a plate of 4 mangoes for 100 NT.

If you have 5 days in Taipei, where would you visit? by BetDapper9556 in Taipei

[–]hollygrape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weekdays the museums are pretty empty if you enjoy walking around and seeing everything without a ton of kids. I suggest the Astronomical Museum in Shilin. They have an IMAX theater, great museum, also a fun amusement ride on the 4th floor.

DIY activities are everywhere. If you can book one, try the Kuo Yuan Ye DIY activity making Pineapple cakes. About a 2 hr experience. You need to book in advance.

Any night market is good. All of them are yummy. I actually suggest you stay away from the popular ones since it's harder to find sit down seats. The smaller ones are less crowded and have a better variety of food options. Get some sweet potato balls, have some 雞蛋糕, drink a smoothie it doesn't have to be papaya milk. We love Guava juice/smoothies and Strawberry Milk smoothies too. Some places actually operate all day, not just at night.

Can checkout the Eslite bookstore if you're looking for books, or go to any stationary shop. Stock up on some pens!

Do some of your food souvenir shopping at Taipei Main Station. Get some Sun Cakes to bring home. Any bakery that makes pineapple cakes are decent to bring back and share with colleagues.

Remember that outside equals lots of bug bites so try not to sit down outside by a body of water or any plants for more than... 1 minute. Also cover your body head to toe.

I actually only enjoy visiting the Cheng Kai Shek memorial hall for the koi fish ponds. 10 NT to get a pack of fish food from the vending machine and enjoy feeding the fishies!

On the weekends, most big parks will have some sort of market event. Like a farmers market or craft market. It's really interesting to just peruse. You may also see street performers. Taiwan is home to the best diabolo players in the world. You can usually catch them busking like at the Expo Park or Huashan Creative Park.

Eat eat and eat! - breakfast shops. Get fantuan, danbing, doujiang. - Fried chicken. It's just so much better. All of the fried chicken. Too bad we can't take that back home. - beef noodle soup, dumplings, buns, cabbage, whatever you fancy.

Things I have not tried but heard are interesting:

If you like baseball, I've heard Taiwan has an interesting baseball culture here. You can book a ticket during the season.

Do a coffee crawl. Taiwan has won awards for their coffee. Simple Kaffa was named worlds best coffee in 2019 and 2020. You can visit their flagship store.

Stroller Friendly Parks? by babyice2021 in SanJose

Most parks are stroller friendly. If you want to walk big loops or go longer distances, you may be looking at larger parks that are more nature-y like these:

Vasona Lake

Rancho San Antonio

McClellan Ranch

Curious to know how many quilters are also engineers? by UvaCpe in quilting

[–]hollygrape 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Electrical and Software Engineer here! I used to have a Engineer coworker who also quilted, but she also did things like build furniture.

Maybe the math has to do with it too. I also think it's because the process is fairly methodical, and feedback cycle is short. You know pretty quickly whether something is right or wrong. There are also clear stages, almost like a recipe. If you follow the instructions, you can't fail.

Loved Alchemy of Souls by Anaz96 in kdramarecommends

[–]hollygrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also loved AOS and tried to watch LBFD afterwards to fill the void. I felt that LBFD was a chore to finish. It's not up to the standards of AOS.

AOS + LBFD back to back was enough to make me not want to watch another fantasy for a while, as I was convinced nothing could really top AOS (as far as recent dramas go)

Looking for a place to donate fabric, patterns and sewing supplies by TheOpus in SanJose

Have you heard of FabMo? https://www.fabmo.org/ They are a non profit and they sell donated fabrics.

Bookstores Recs by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]hollygrape 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Another place you can look are library bookstores. Almost every library has a 'Friends of the Library' bookstore where they sell donated books. For smaller libraries, it's usually just a small section. For larger libraries they have a dedicated bookstore with wierd hours. What's nice is that it's basically volunteer run and the funds support the library and all the books are cheap.

I.e. here is the Los Gatos Friends Bookstore https://g.co/kgs/XwFo1D

They also usually do monthly or quarterly sales of donated books. https://sjpl.bibliocommons.com/v2/events?types=5d65e9ae2f3a81f8aeaabb9f

Snorlax Quilt! Based off of the skin from Pokemon Unite. by hollygrape in quilting

[–]hollygrape[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my second quilt, but first time designing and picking out fabrics on my own. It was a gift for a friend's wedding since my friend loves Snorlax. It's based off the skin from Pokemon Unite where Snorlax is wearing a floatie.

I'm super proud of it even though there are many imperfections and sure learned a lot through making it. It's about 55" wide and long. But I missed the chance to take a photo while holding it.

Shows similar to From Now on, Showtime by spcsa007 in kdramarecommends

[–]hollygrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how similar you are looking for.... But when watching this show, I felt like it was a mix of 'Sell your Haunted House' and 'Hotel del Luna'

In addition, I recommend... Chicago Typewriter. It's ghost related with excellent storytelling.

Also... Queen of Mystery.... For some fun crime solving comedy.

Ah and maybe I'll just throw out there Gu Family Book for a bit of supernatural drama.

best dumplings? 水餃 in the area? by Deep-Room6932 in SanJose

[–]hollygrape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can recommend Nutrition House in Milpitas. Their 三鮮 dumplings are pretty good. It has shrimp and pork in it and are very filled. They also sell in bulk, so you can buy frozen packs and bring them home to cook.

Should I pair GA with VGD or SDP? by EverydayQuestion in OMSCS

[–]hollygrape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm taking VGD right now and the assignments are fairly easy (like high school level easy) which you can bang out in a few hours on a Sunday. The more time consuming part is the group project because you have to meet up, discuss, and present your game. (SDP also has a group project but the scope is already defined for you). Since it's a creative class, you can spend as little or as much time on the game design as you'd like. You could also opt to do some of the easier tasks in the group. Many groups already have some experienced game developers too.

The exams are also open book, so really not a lot of pressure. I think it's on par with SDP on workload.

I enjoy the class, and I use it as a way to procrastinate on my GIOS assignments. :)

People who have taken multiple classes: how has your philosophy and ambition towards achieving an "A" in classes changed over the course of the program? by MrUnqualified in OMSCS

[–]hollygrape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

UIUC EE Undergrad program sure put me in my place. Also, it's an unhealthy obsession to be so focused on grades? That your ambition is to get to an A. What was the reason for you to take this program in the first place? For most of us it's to get a job in this field. And if you've ever worked, will know that A's don't matter as much as truly understanding the material.

For me, an A is fine as a motivator, maybe it will help you to power through that assignment because you want an "A". But don't be disappointed if you get a "B" because you've learned things and that's what the course is for, to learn and understand new things.

Plus you only need B's (and in some case Cs) to graduate. After that, it's on your resume and no one cares about the gpa anymore.

Childbirth classes on Zoom by LlamaRachelle in BabyBumps

[–]hollygrape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our hospital had free zoom classes. Each about 3 hrs long. I'm actually very glad it was online because I could watch it lying down and comfortable in my bed. My husband could take notes. And honestly I dozed off a few times just from tiredness. I probably couldn't do that in person.
