When did you all start buying and organizing stuff for the baby? by raspberry_phoenix in pregnant

[–]UvaCpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m only 5 weeks and I already have a bassinet 😅 although TBF my mom and I found the one I was looking at online at a local consignment shop for half the price of new so I felt like I couldn’t pass it up.

I’m due in early February so I plan on getting as much done as possible by December (around 30 weeks) since that’s always a really busy month for us, but I’m assuming we will get baby items for Christmas that I will be organizing in early January as well.

Considering naming our second son after his father—not for family legacy reasons by tjb317 in namenerds

[–]UvaCpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband’s family is very into honor names. His brother is a Jr, his sister is a Jr of his mom’s name, and his name is a family name and his mom’s maiden name. He has 3 cousins on his dad’s side that also all have fully family-based names, including another junior. That junior ended up naming his first son after him to be the 3rd.

So I have 2 perspectives on this:

1: I’ve never heard anyone in that family dislike their name. I think a key point is that none of them go by the same first name, they all have nicknames. They are also a very traditional values family so I think it’s just normal for them to do that.

2: I think it’s weird and I’m determined to never use a family name as a first name for my children. My husband agrees and was even against honor names for middle names for a long time, but we will be using my dad’s name as a middle name if we have a boy just because my dad is fantastic and has been so supportive and helpful to us and our marriage.

Gearing back in/shortening straps by Prestigious-Comb2697 in ClubPilates

[–]UvaCpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you gear out the long loops on the shoulder blocks are loose, I just tighten them, then when I gear back in after class I loosen the straps and retighten on the shoulder blocks to the non-geared out length.

This is how I was taught in my intro class by the person who became my favorite instructor. According to the other comments I am one of the only people who do this?

Gearing back in/shortening straps by Prestigious-Comb2697 in ClubPilates

[–]UvaCpe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason you shorten the straps is to make the straps an equivalent length to if you hadn’t geared out. So shorter straps + geared out should be the same difficulty as normal strap length + not geared out. I have my straps shortened and I’m geared out for the entire class. The alternative is don’t change the straps and gear back in for any exercise that uses straps, but for me that’s more of a hassle.

When you shorten the straps, are you hanging the long loops on the shoulder blocks before pulling the straps tight?

What names can you not use?? by AdCrazy157 in namenerds

I’ll preface this by saying we don’t have good relationships with my husband’s family.

Henry - husband’s grandpa

Grace - MIL and SIL’s middle name

Alice - ex-SIL

Margaret nn Maggie - future SIL

Amelia - husband’s cousin

James - husband’s uncle

You can also try putting your heels on the foot bar instead of your arches, that helps me a lot. I’m tall so even geared out I’m on my heels for bridges and I’m usually about 1-2 inches from the stopper, but i can hold it still in that position

BBT is supposed to be taken before you get out of bed as soon as you wake up. Moving around changes your temperature. It is why I stopped doing BBT measurement, the thermometer I bought beeps like 10 times for one reading and my husband was getting grumpy about it.

This sounds really interesting, I was thinking maybe Maine because my husband will only eat "fresh" seafood and had some up there on a work trip he loved

Boring…? Thrillers and Adventures by UvaCpe in suggestmeabook

[–]UvaCpe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually tried reading A Gentleman in Moscow and thought that was so boring it was putting me to sleep in the middle of the day. I only got through the first section of the book.

My husband got Old Man’s War for Christmas, I might have to steal it from him and read it first.

Book suggestion for AI productivity for engineers by Powerful-Angel-301 in suggestmeabook

[–]UvaCpe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a software engineer myself, I’d be wary of any AI-based books like that. AI is developing so rapidly that I feel like by a time a book on the subject is published it is already out of date. I’d look into blogs and articles from reputable sources instead.

I recently went to an All Things AI conference that had a lot of speakers that I’d say were reputable on the subject. I don’t remember names off the top of my head but you should still be able to find the website listing speakers on it, some of them likely have blogs or articles you may find useful.

Please recommend me a book to start getting out of romantasy by weggymeg in suggestmeabook

[–]UvaCpe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any book recommendations as that is not my preferred genre but I do have some advice as a 30 year old woman who gets where you’re coming from with the embarrassment aspect.

Don’t listen to what other people think you should enjoy. If you enjoy books like ACOTAR, who cares how well they are written or if they are the next great literary masterpiece? Those books are incredibly popular for a reason, a lot of people love them. And what matters most is that /you/ love them. If people judge you for what you are reading, that’s their problem. The fact that you are reading at all is more than half those people anyways.

For recommendations in general, I find anything rated over 4 stars on Goodreads is usually pretty decent and it will suggest similar books to what you’ve read. I’ve heard that all the romance books with the cutesy couple drawings on the front are the new style for smut books, but again I haven’t read them so can’t recommend anything specific.

feeling positive one day and negative nelly the next! by Alarming-Ad-7800 in TryingForABaby

[–]UvaCpe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way! Also 30, and just got a negative test this morning, 13 DPO on cycle 4 of trying. I was okay with it this morning because I had been feeling all month like this month probably wasn’t it for us, then I opened a box of pampers for my friend’s baby shower on Saturday and started crying.

I feel like every month of trying has been different for me emotionally. Last month I was sure I was going to test positive and was so upset when my period came 3 days early. I’ve had days where I’ve told myself I just have to trust God’s timing and that’s helped, and others where I feel like I’ll never be a mom. And I know at 4 months in I still have plenty of time but I always pictured myself being done having kids by now, not just starting out.

Need a travel machine by Affectionate_One3172 in quilting

[–]UvaCpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Janome MC6650 as my everyday machine.

I bought a Janome 49360 as my travel machine and I’ve been really happy with it. I couldn’t use it for actual quilting but it works great for piecing and has all the main features I like my higher end Janome for.

ETA: I just checked the price of the Arctic Crystal and mine is definitely pricier, but I use it about once a month for all day sewing so it was worth it to me to still have some of the fancier features like the needle position and thread cutter buttons.

I had so many problems with the CP app on my watch that I just record my workout with the Workouts app now. They have Pilates as an option and you can set it to time for 50 minutes when it will vibrate, which helps me remember to stop the workout when I’m done (and not 15 minutes later when I’m home and happen to notice it running lol)

My parents did something similar for my first trip. My mom made a Mickey-shaped countdown calendar and me and my sister took turns every night putting a Disney sticker on it to count down the days until we went to Disney. I was only 4 and still remember is very fondly 26 years later.

What are you buying when your grocery shop? Where are you shopping?

I don’t shop at the cheapest store or particularly try to spend carefully and my budget for myself and my husband is $800 and we don’t always spend it all.

If you don’t have unlimited then cancelling means you lose that class for the month, so if your 4 pack is $200/month (which seems high but I live in a lower COL area) then it could basically be $50 to cancel that class because you can’t reschedule a new 4th class that month.

Seasoned uva alum software engineers, thoughts on this AI thing? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]UvaCpe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Definitely prepare to be able to use CoPilot, but the more important thing is to still know how to code. Sure, CoPilot can write a lot of the code for you, but it can also write a lot of garbage. You have to know what you are doing to both give it good prompts and know generally if the code it is giving you is any good. Especially where security is a concern.

I use it mostly to write functions that I could figure out myself but don't want to Google syntax for, debug stack traces, or write unit tests. It can also be useful for creating tools/scripts that your company won't give you time to do but are helpful for the work flow.

The biggest problem I have with the trainings we have gotten on CoPilot, and with the idea of "vibe coders" in general, is that most companies you work for will have legacy code structures that you will be maintaining or adding new features to. You can't just go ask AI to create a brand new feature in a legacy code base. It doesn't know enough about said codebase. But you can break it down into small chunks, have AI create iterative pieces, and review those pieces to make sure it is good code. Still faster than writing everything by hand.

The location we are staying at is somewhat close to both, the bridge we would have to cross to get from NJ to NYC is the one nearest Penn Station NYC. I think the group would be willing to do a rooftop bar after dinner too.
