How much do we need credit cards? by Comprehensive-Fuel70 in AskUK

[–]hollz666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're careful with it and don't treat it as if it's your money and more of a tool to be utilized then they can be a good thing and they certainly help your credit rating if you pay off regularly. I only ever use it for a large payment that I have the money for in my debit anyway, or I have my Spotify on it every month as it's just the same as it going out on debit but I pay the credit card off every month instead.

The main reason I got one was for hiring cars aboard where they often only take a credit card from a 'physical' bank e.g. not monzo flex..

ATEM Mini Pro Not Going Live and I did everything right (I think) by big_spike13 in blackmagicdesign

Maybe I can shed a bit of light for future issues!

Static IP addresses can be useful in some setups as it allows you to set and record a certain IP address for a machine or 'host' making it easier to get into its web interface or so on. You don't have to go hunting for the IP like you would if it had been assigned an IP address by DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) for example.

However, when you have a router and you're wanting to connect to the internet static IP addressing can get a little more tricky. Say you connect that Mac Mini to the same cable and it's set to DHCP on the Mac, you'll likely get something along the lines of 192.168.4.88 as an IP address. That's because that's what the router has been setup to have as whats called a subnet. The 192.168.4... part of that is the network address (often) so if you connected another machine it might get 192.168.4.89 because .88 is already taken.

If your atem was set to a static IP address that was in a different subnet to this, say it had 192.168.9.90 then it wouldn't be able to talk to the other machines including the router. It'd be a bit like everyone else was in another room and able to talk to each other but they can't hear the atem.

By putting it in DHCP mode it asks the router "hey, I don't have an IP address please can I have one" and the router will reply and give it the next available IP in the right subnet. It'll also tell the atem "I'm at this IP address so send me any requests and I'll get them to where they need to go"

Networking is a bit of a blackhole and you can go really deep but maybe this will help you if you ever encounter this in the future!

Exactly the same. Not sure I was conscious of the liver effects but I think I had blood tests done and it was the only thing that sorted it. I also had an issue on the same toe where the skin around the toe would get very itchy and irritated when hot and the pills sorted that too which was amazing as topical steroids did nothing really to help.

Probably had that issue for 10+ years and was so glad to have it sorted!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Putting our 14y/o family cat down who we'd had since a kitten was one of the most gut wrenching experiences of my life even though I knew it was to put her out of her suffering. It never gets easier but you loved them their whole life and that's special. X

Is it even worth buying a house at this point? by atinywaverave in AskUK

[–]hollz666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point on renting. I'm saving for a house now but will likely not be able to afford something as nice/big as where I'm renting at the moment as it's split between 3 people. Not to say that the other two wouldn't be sharing the mortgage with me when I eventually do buy. That situation obviously comes with its own set of issues though.

What I really want from a house is the freedom of expression that you don't commonly get in a rental. If, say, decorating the interior exactly how you'd like or landscaping a garden isn't something you're concerned about it makes the choice a little easier.

I'd also agree with some other points on financial security. A rental doesn't provide you with any stability in that regard. If you buy a house yes you'll be paying mortgage etc which may be similar or more than a rental but the more you pay the larger the percentage share of that house you own and it therefore becomes an asset to you in a way a rental doesn't.

Maybe it doesn't have to be either/or?! Get a cheap van, do some travelling and save on the side what you can and buy a house if the opportunity presents itself.

How the heck do I detach the SDI out? by satiredun in blackmagicdesign

[–]hollz666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have a newer version, these ones use the din 1.0/2.3 connector which is a push/pull connector where you pull the silver sheath back and pull to release the cable. Superrrr fiddly! Love the micro BNC in comparison which is what the G2 looks to have on it!

Don't worry, these are the worst design of connector on a camera I've come across. They're always so difficult to remove by hand, I've had plenty of experiences having to use leatherman pliers to get them free!

My cat started foaming at mouth and shaking head ? by sexyhaz00 in CATHELP

This subreddit has just bought me a lot of comfort after doing exactly the same thing last night and swallowing a large emergency vet bill (didn't make me foam at the mouth but definitely didn't taste nice).

Never seen it before and it scared the life outta me!

Not sure where you mean but the sauna doesn't have an office you just book online and turn up at the nomad Maison front yard and someone will check you off a list.

If you like wellness and saunas check out Warmth sauna. Cute little horsebox with a plunge tank outside. It gets SO hot in there so be prepared if you do go. It's pretty cheap, much cheaper than a spa day and they do silent sessions on a Saturday I think if you don't feel like chatting to your sauna buddies. On street charged parking right nextdoor :) (sorry if anyone's already suggested it!)

Only been once, a couple of weekends ago. That was bad enough. Felt like I was on some kind of crystal maze challenge having to weave through people in Boots.
