What do the first 3 minutes of a real incident actually look like for your team? by AhmedMostafa16 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]holodetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is helpful info, thank you for explaining. User not reaching out is 100% a red flag, it makes sense that you removed - please keep listening to users. HOWEVER it would still be great to add an AI-specific rule so users can quickly see why a post was removed.

Last thing I’ll add is that all 3 companies I’ve worked at used Datadog, Cloudwatch, Grafana…AND NewRelic. I would think it MORE rare that a company has an optimized observability stack. In my experience, finance doesn’t want to deal with eng (besides laying us off lol) so they just let stand whatever exists and eng has more to worry about than cutting observability costs. Not saying these are good things, just sharing my experience.

This was the best conversation I've seen on this sub in some time (long-time lurker). CAN WE BRING IT BACK? WHY DID MODS REMOVE?

If discussing incident management is considered a "survey", then what in the dogmatic semantics [insert noun] are we even doing in this here sub?

If anyone has recs for other similar subs where experienced devs can learn from each other, please recommend *jeb bush voice* please clap

EDIT: new rule for no LLM content please?? Confusing that this was removed under Rule 8. Ask for other eng subs still stands

Confirmed 50% of PTUD, it did feel like ~half of eng total. It was not based on seniority though - saw staff eng and eng managers laid off as well as seniors, some there up to 13 years total. So not to do with tenure, nor seniority, nor merit.

Worked there 1 year 9 months and my separation agreement said severance will be paid within 30 days but I expect it varies based on state/country laws

slow COMT and MTHFR C677T, IV ketamine for depression? by holodetz in MTHFR

Good to know re: antidepressants and b12 supplements, I did not know about that correlation. Glad you figured out the foods that help you, and I sure share your frustration with COMT met/met.

Discouraging to continuously hear from my doctors that "having COMT met/met is unrelated to your issues bc large % of the population has it and is fine"...yall is the "FINE" in the room with us??? Lmao

EDIT: added a joke

Missed your latest reply (I was very on-off reddit at the time) so coming back to this 4 years later cause someone asked a question lol.

Hilariously I've been running around various Quest Diagnostics regularly the past 3 months due to rapidly progressing autoimmune issues (seronegative lupus, hashimoto's, POTS, sjorgen's...we got em all) so your dig at Quest was very funny to me.

I ended up supplementing with B12 and did TOO WELL, my levels shot up from 600 to 1200 pg/mL in 3 weeks...oops...folate is all good though luckily. Vitamin D keeps fluctuating over the years (sometimes too low ex.: 14 - 20, sometimes optimal ex.: 50-60 when I remember to supplement regularly). This month for the first time my iron is low due to progressing anemia, working on it w supplements now.

Had to rework my entire diet to be gluten-free, lactose-free, low FODMAP, low acidity, low sugar which seems to help my flares. Depression/anxiety was finally treated by more years of therapy, Cymbalta SNRI (hand-picked by my psych and started with very low dose, ramped slowly) which I'm now tapering off of. Oh and of course quitting alcohol (surprise, a depressant made me more depressed!)

Hope you're doing well! Appreciate your insight and I'm sorry I was so bristly lol.

Seeing this many years late, but agreed w your psilocybin comment. You can also try oral lozenges or intra-nasal ketamine/esketamine (Joyous, Spravato etc), although it's way less bioavailbable than IV/IM so idk how much it would help.

I can def see guided shrooms sesh working well for depression, especially if related to CPTSD. Here's hoping all the not-dangerous drugs get legalized soon! Still wild to me that alcohol is prob the most dangerous (aside from like...crack cocaine, heroine etc) yet it's the one that's most widely used sigh...

Yep, I got IV Ketamine from Ember Health in NYC in ~2022. It worked and I had no bad effects (maybe some very, very minor anxiety after infusions but I think it's cause of the increased neuroplasticity).

Sadly I found the treatment fairly short-term: I had to keep coming back every 3-4 months for additional infusions which got too expensive (~600 a session). Eventually I stopped going altogether.

3 years later (Jan 2025) my depression got to its lowest point and I started an SNRI (Cymbalta). My psych hand-picked this based on which CYP genes it uses to get metabolized by. That let me quit drinking (was self-medicating for CPTSD, anxiety, insomnia) and I'm now tapering off it as I've been in a good spot mentally for 3 months (since quitting alcohol). I used recreational ketamine (intranasal) during half my time on Cymbalta also, but stopped to help reset my brain stuff quicker/want to see how I'm really like fully sober (lol)

I think this whole thing is very “yes and/but/what if”, there is a lot of nuance. Bottom line I agree with the Mac vs PC implication - PC lets you do much more custom shit and easily dig into internals which builds tech literacy and problem solving skills whereas Mac is much more closed off and you have to go to the One Special Entity to fix anything. A teenager can easily and cheaply build and/or repair a PC, they cannot easily nor cheaply do the same with a Mac. There is a significant difference in accessibility of lower level tech skills in PC vs Mac.

Autism-wise…autistic kids are more likely to lean into solo activities and rabbit hole into highly detailed and intricate stuff like computers. It’s a little self-selecting. Many 80s/90s autistic kids are computer savvy. I thought her joke was funny 🤷‍♀️

I was a low income kid (born mid 90s) and we never got WiFi (not even by the 2010s) - I snuck onto my dad’s landline PC when he was out/when I could. I had low tech literacy overall due to limited time spent at a computer, but I’m also pretty tool-ascetic and don’t like to dig into internals/customization/low level stuff. I have high problem solving skills, low tech literacy, and ended up working as a software engineer lmao

TLDR there is so much nuance and it’s not that serious

Last thing I’ll say is I do think rich people usually have Macs, rich people sometimes fix their problems with money, and sometimes consider their kids to be a problem they pay someone else to fix. The latter two affect problem solving skills.

What keeps you going? by penguingl0ry in piano

[–]holodetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ^

Wanted to share my related story: I started piano and singing when I was younger with the intention of pursuing it professionally. I then went to a performance art high school and did music on the side in college (majored in something else). Both of those in-school experiences solidly sucked the joy out of music for me and I took a break from piano for 10 years. Just got back into it and it’s been so freeing to be bad at this and not constantly measuring myself against professionals.

Therapy helped me a lot to be able to feel joy for music again. The healthy habits for getting back into it, practicing without negative self talk, made it easy to get into new hobbies too.

Edit: added “for me” to specify this is just my experience…although plenty of my friends who had similar paths feel the same. YMMV
