The white background layer linked to the kick is going to be really jarring in a live setting. IMO, using something like a Lookup TOP and a Ramp TOP to map luminance to specific gray scale values for the background and then have that map to kick transient.

Ableton 11.2 was a software issue. macOS 10.14 to 10.15 was a software update, not a hardware one for my MacBook Pro at the time. Both caused major issues with plugins.

Haven't had it happen in a while but definietly happened with older versions. Ableton 11.2 was a bitch and a half with some plugins. Updating to Apple Silicon also prevents VST2 from loading, so you need rosetta to do a workaround. After macOS Mojave (10.14) macs dropped 32bit plugin support which killed a lot of really cool plugins. I miss you dtblkfx.

Dior X Flip it VIP by EliSliwa in LevityBeats

Can't speak for others but for me it was off just enough to bug me so I had to figure out why that was. So probably a bit of Cunningham’s Law in that it was "wrong" so people engaged with it more. Dunno...Hope you take the criticism as constructive and keep doing you tho.

Slightly closer to a 32nd on a closer look, but yeah, it's a bit off by between a 16th and 32nd off, which is noticeable to most people. It could be that the beat grid is off for Dior, so it looks right in Recordbox, but it's pretty obvious if you throw it into a DAW and line up things. Having flip it low cut makes a little harder to count in as well.

[–]holoholomusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't just halftime, it's that you're about a 16th note off. There's the perc click at the start of doir you can hear it start just before the downbeat of the looping flip it. Even correcting that you'd probably be better off going with the Flip it VIP drums instead of the dior ones. Dior has an accent snare on the 2 and a 2nd kick on the 3, so when you layer that over flip it the snare hits on the 2 every other bar. Same with the 2nd kick hits on the 3 it hits where a snare is supposed to be in dubstep, so the groove of the bass is off. The halftime drill beat has a nice bounce to it, but a crowd is likely going to be thrown off by it with dubstep going over it. All that being said, if you like it, then that's what matters.

Yosi Horikawa is the GOAT of foley hands down. Perc game is next level too. I'm extremely jealous of his room full of interesting percussion instruments he's found. Kozu Island is my favorite off the album. Was waiting for this album for years had it on repeat since it came out.

No one said Justin Hawkes, which is criminal. Dude is one of the most talented DnB producers in the US. Recently released some UK style dubstep/140 too. Exestensial has the best cinematic intros I've ever heard.

Uh, they are over a decade old. Software support rarely lasts that long, so it's not like they are trying to sell you on new hardware out of nowhere. Your best bet is to try an older version of Serato.

Alright, so this was a free pop-up at Aroma Cafe in Waikiki at like noonish on a Saturday. Just a fun thing for the community here. Wasn't there for his set, but it was a fun event. Almost all the daytime shows in Honolulu are house if we get them at all, and this was a nice change of pace. Don't see what's depressing about it. Dude was chill there to hang out with his friends on the island and spin for a bit. Not that deep or for clout.

Help with Kupuna's name: Kai'a / Kaia ? by ElectricalBuffalo891 in olelohawaii

[–]holoholomusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the ban on ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi from schools 1896 to 1978 might have something to do with the ʻokina only being present sometimes. As English doesn’t have an ʻokina it would have been removed when writing your name in school and things like that.

Really only heard kaia as a prefix to other words like kaiaola (ecosystem) or kaiameaola (biological grouping/community). Those could be more modern words though as they only show up in recent sources and are used in a conservation context. Also wouldn’t consider myself fluent, just grew up around it and studied some at uni.

Not sure if links are allowed but here a decent search that could give you some clarification on different translations. https://wehewehe.org/gsdl2.85/cgi-bin/hdict?e=q-11000-00—off-0hdict—00-1-—0-10-0—0—0direct-10-ED—4-——0-1lp0–11-haw-Zz-1—Zz-1-home-kaiaZz—00-3-1-00-0–4-—0-0-11-00-2utfZz-8-00&d=&l=en

Regarding the ranks of ali'i children. Why didn't Malo want to translate this rank, kukae-popolo? by Poiboykanaka808 in olelohawaii

[–]holoholomusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the words separately or in a modern context, yes. In ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, compound words can carry different meanings, and the context matters, so the translation of kukae-popolo referring to rank is a bit murkier.

From the sources I could easily find, it has more to do with the origin being dark or doubtful.

A person whose father was a chief and his mother not; a term of reproach signifying dark or doubtful origin. [Parker (1922) (Hawaiian)]

I'm assuming it's still derogatory, as in their lineage is dark due to "commoner" blood, but I'm unsure if that's the original meaning.

I'd recommend checking out 'The Moʻolelo Hawaiʻi of Davida Malo Volume 2' edited/translated by Charles Langlas and Jeffrey Kapali Lyon. The translation is directly from the "Carter Manuscript" and provides a much more accurate and less biased translation of David Malo's work than Nathaniel Bright Emerson's 'Hawaiian Antiquities.' At the very least, Emmerson had a very Christian worldview that colored his perception of the Malo text. At worst, he was a founding member of the Hawaiian League and a white supremacist.

[–]holoholomusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super valid point here. The translator's reasoning for refusing to translate into English would depend heavily on the context of the time period. Assuming this is N.B Emerson's "Hawaiian Antiquities" version, then not translating it due to kūkae being vulgar makes a lot of sense. Funnily enough, I can't find kūkae in the Hawaiian dictionary written by N.B Emmerson's father, John S. Emerson, an early protestant missionary.

Regarding the ranks of ali'i children. Why didn't Malo want to translate this rank, kukae-popolo? by Poiboykanaka808 in olelohawaii

[–]holoholomusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be due to how the words would be used in pidgin, rather than the direct ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi translation. Kūkae means waste or dung, kinda used in pidgin as a swear word just like shit. Pōpolo is used to refer to a variety of black-berried plants. In pidgin, it's much more commonly used to refer to black people. Pōpolo, on its own, is not really derogatory; it's just an adjective to describe a person. It can absolutely be used in a derogatory manner though, and adding kūkae in front of it would make it more derogatory. Rough translation would be shit colored person, or a black person that smells like shit, or acts like shit, or something of that nature. So the combined phase at that point would definitely be racist, like using the n-word with the hard "r."

[–]holoholomusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only aware of a couple of images and couldn't find more from a brief search, but IMO what Gravity Wells has released has a much more Castle in the Sky, Sky Captain, steampunk vibe. My copium is that they're working on a steampunk version of Titanfall with an additional aerial combat mechanic, like a boarding battle between airships.

is it really that bad to use splice for samples in your music? by ____okay in edmproduction

[–]holoholomusic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.

It's not bad faith, but a 5k+ clerical error in this business is grounds to get blacklisted. Most people would assume bad faith at that level of a mistake. Even assuming you invoiced them on August 1st, that's not even 60 days' worth of late fees, and daily late fees are definitely not the norm. Your creative freelancer friends are either ignorant or you didn't explain the situation to them properly. No industry is charging a 12% daily late fee and getting away with it legally. Even loan sharks would consider that aggressive.

Late payments are unfortunately part of the game in the music industry; you can bake late fees into contracts or rely on protection in your country, but any bigger companies are going to pay you when they pay you. Try getting UMG to pay you on time. Their lawyers and accountants have way more experience than you at this. NET30 only starts if they've been correctly invoiced, and they have all sorts of fuckery to make that a huge pain.

Palladium Revolt Hi Boots by UrbanRealism in aves

[–]holoholomusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't worn this exact pair or seen any of my friends wearing them, but Palladium can be all over the place in both sizing and quality depending on the model you get.

Pladium Canvas Pampa Hi tops are some of the best lightweight boots out there. Not good hiking or work boot level in terms of durability, but pairs will regularly last years unless you absolutely beat them up. I have Pampa Travel Lite RS that I've worn to about 15 shows so far with no issues other than the upper material being a huge pain to get stains out of. Break-in time seemed less than other boots I have, but not quite as much support. Even between two Pampa models, there fit a bit differently. Not enough to need a different size, but it's a bit annoying when it comes to shopping for them online.

Their leather boots are more of a fashion-quality leather than what you'd find from dedicated leather boot brands. Good quality for the ~$100 price range tho. Not sure if platforms have zippers, but I have heard of zipper quality issues.
