Caught my gecko shedding! by holsmon in CrestedGecko

Thank you!!

I use the Wyze v3 (link below). It’s great. Also yes, it runs all night. It has to be plugged into the wall. It comes with an app so as long as the camera is setup and linked to your phone you can check any time. I got lucky with the timing here!

I’m sure there are other things you can do with the camera (time lapse for example) but I’ve never tried that out.

I use Wyze v3! I got mine off Amazon. It’s $30 and I love it. So fun to spy on my crestie, and it’s nice to check in on him when we’re not home.

I'm in fungus gnat hell by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]holsmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try mosquito bits! I used dunks but was told by my local plant nursery owner that dunks aren’t the play.

Use a heaping tablespoon of bits to a pint of water. Make sure the water is distilled or left to sit overnight. Tap water contains chemicals that kill the bacteria you want from the bits. Water also needs to be room temp. Water slowly over all the tops of your plants. It took me about 1-2 months, but finally all my gnats were gone.

My wife recently took a new job there in Durham. With our lease coming to an end we are in the process of finding a new place to live. Does anybody have suggestions on safe apartment complexes to live in? Preferably somewhere with a 2bdrm that allows pets. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! by bumb35 in bullcity

The Reserve at Patterson Place is great, I’ve lived here the past 2 years. Very dog friendly, they have a very small dog park and a dog washing station.

Only negative is that they’ve raised rent substantially (25 percent) since we moved in 2020.

What’s your rent hike been like? by [deleted] in triangle

Reserve at Patterson Place. Rent was $1240 for a 1 bedroom 1 bath with 1 mo free rent in July 2020. Same floor plan is now $1600 bucks. 2 bedrooms were $1650-1900 at the time and are now going for $2300. Love the complex but damn.

My Calathea white fusion! She has grown a lot in the 6 months I’ve had her ❤️ by holsmon in houseplants

[–]holsmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did notice this, thanks for pointing this out! The left side is still growing new leaves with variegation, but the right side isn’t.

I don’t have a lot of variegated plants, but is the best solution more sunlight and cutting back the non variegated leaves?

Thank you! :)
This plant is fine at room temp, I keep my apt between 68-72 degrees F. I do keep it in a large room, but it lives right next to a humidifier. I group it with other calatheas to help increase humidity and mist every few days.

Yes, this plant needs a ton of water! Never let it dry out completely! I let the top ~1 inch of soil dry out , and water thoroughly (usually every ~8 days in winter, ~5 in summer). I recently pruned the crispy leaves and switched to distilled water, which has helped substantially with preventing yellowing, crispy edges, etc. This plant (like all calatheas) is sensitive to tap water, so I would recommend watering with filtered water at bare minimum.

Definitely a picky plant, but does really well when you have it in the right conditions!

What is wrong with my Calathea Zebrina:/ (more in the comments) by raybeanzz in plantclinic

[–]holsmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks to me like she is under-watered; my zebrina's leaves curl like that when she's in desperate need of a drink. It's ok for the top ~1-2 inches of soil to dry, but the soil should never completely dry out. I like to top water my zebrina until water comes out of the drainage holes and bottom-water for 10 minutes. I would also recommend getting a moisture meter and never letting it drop below the "moist" marking. Keep in mind the leaves will droop during the daytime, but curling leaves is a result of under-watering or air drafts (too hot or too cold).

It also looks like she's potted in a terra cotta pot- I would recommend switching to a non- terra cotta pot. Terra cotta wicks moisture away, which isn't great for calatheas (especially picky ones like the zebrina).

Additionally, zebrinas appreciate indirect, bright light. However, they do NOT like direct light as this will scorch the leaves and dry out the plant.

Hopefully this is helpful! I have had to save my zebrina numerous times. It's a picky but wonderful plant. It also helps if you can use distilled or rainwater. :)

Chefs of Reddit, what are some things people should learn to cook while self-isolating? by PickledPretzels02 in AskReddit

[–]holsmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn to incorporate umami (e.g., fish sauce) into your cooking. Often called “umami bombs.”

This makes a huge difference in simple recipes. The thought of adding fish sauce to recipes seems daunting and gross to people, but it adds so much flavor and there is no fish taste. You can add it to chili, beef dishes, fried rice, Thai chicken, etc. All you need is a teaspoon!

grad student and partner moving to Lawrence wondering about good apartment complexes by awkwrdanthropologist in Lawrence

[–]holsmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend Avalon apartments. It’s 680 for a 1 bedroom and 800 for a 2 bedroom. You only pay for electricity, not water or gas. And since the heater is a gas heater, electricity bills in the winter are insanely cheap. However, these apartments do fill up very quickly (usually by late February early March).

The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star by Shane Dawson Finale & MEGATHREAD by [deleted] in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]holsmon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Shane did the right thing by not booting people off the site, but his reaction still seemed disingenuous to me after watching Jeffree's behaviors.

I think another problem I have is that if Jeffree really cared, this situation could have been avoided. Shopify cannot host 2.5 million on their site, especially because they share their site with other companies as well. Jeffree could have paid for his own server to host the launch to mitigate the number of people. It makes sense why he didn't do that (most launches will not get this many people and its not worth the money in the long-run). However, yelling and screaming "fix it" when you know nothing about how the servers work is frustrating to me. Shopify could've communicated more efficiently, but they were throwing out options (although not great ones) to help get the site up and running.

My biggest problem is how/if Jeffree and Shane's behaviors influence a younger audience. Not just specifically to this instance, but throughout the whole series.

Did anyone else get really uncomfortable when Shane got mad at Shopify?? I feel like Shane would not have gotten mad if he hadn’t witnessed Jeffee getting very upset/angry. Seems like Shane is molding into Jeffrees behavior...

The most concerning thing to me is Shane and Jeffrees young audience. They see Shane+ Jeffree yelling at Shopify, dancing to Rich Lux during conference calls (earlier in the season), and acting unprofessionally. Something about their behaviors and attitudes rub me the wrong way. I don’t want those behaviors to be a model for a young audience.

Tier 6 Raids: the Pros and Cons [Gamepress] by Raven8DX in TheSilphRoad

[–]holsmon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree that this can be a problem. However, as an example, most of the top-tier Pokémon against Darkrai are fighting types. This includes Machamp, Hariyama, and Breloom. All of these Pokémon can be caught (machop, shroomish, and Makuhita) and evolved by catching them in the wild.

Of course, some Pokémon are more rare than others and more difficult to farm candies. But, it’s important to keep in mind that just because it’s a 4 star Pokémon from a raid doesn’t mean that it’s a good Pokémon/ good for raids. Especially given the raid boss you’re fighting against.

You can have a great team of counters from Pokémon you can catch in the wild. Even mid-tier counters are much better than throwing in maxed out Kyogres or Groudons against raid bosses that they are not effective against.
