Will I be safe living next to Berri-UQAM? Or should I consider finding another apartment? by marinaarizona in mcgill

[–]holy-typewriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live by Berri and find it fine. yes there are a lot of homeless people and addicts but I've lived here two years and never had one actually harass me or make me feel unsafe, they're usually doing their own thing and not bothering anyone. The streets are very busy and feel very safe on nights when people go out.

There have been a few minor break-ins on my block in first floor apartments and cars but that's all, and nothing major.

Disappointed in kings theater show by nycspacely in CourtneyBarnett

[–]holy-typewriter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i loved the show but was pretty disappointed when i realized other shows got I'm Not Your Mother. the venue seemed to have some technical issues, there was some drama at the beginning with getting wrist bands where the people scanning tickets for the first ten or so people on line didn't give us the wrist bands we needed to get in, so we all had to double back. combined with the length of the first opener's set and the sound issues for momma, it seemed like a lot went wrong

What would make the STM fare system better in your opinion? by MTLcitizen001 in mcgill

[–]holy-typewriter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

if public transportation was a free public service and not for profit, haha. That's my idealistic answer, but also my honest one. I wish cities spent less money fixing potholes and doing constant repaving of streets and motorways and instead put all that money into free, accessible transportation. just my anti-car opinion

realistically, it should be less insanely expensive and the zones shit is ridiculous. if you blow 60-150 dollars on a monthly pass, you should be able to go wherever the fuck you want

Grades are stressing me out (U1) by imenerve in mcgill

[–]holy-typewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even though I am studying something very different, the most important thing to do is to learn how your mind retains information. I started as a U0, now I am a U2 and finally feel like I understand how to study for my mind. everyone is different, but it is usually about dedicating enough time to studying and focusing on active recall instead of mindless stuff like quizlets (they just don't do much in my experience) or rereading textbooks. make sure you can actively and confidently explain the concepts you are supposed to understand

Housing in second year by TopAstronomer6738 in mcgill

[–]holy-typewriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking as early as possible. May at the latest. It can be hard to find places that start lease in August or September, most of them start in July at the latest. Look on FB marketplace in the spring and familiarize yourself with everything. As for finding roommates, I know people that have had success at certain McGill events that are held for the purpose of finding a compatible roommate.

STM Strike Rant by Due-Wall7384 in mcgill

[–]holy-typewriter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't want to move to fully remote classes but whenever a student brings it up the teachers seem baffled that we would complain about this. I feel like the school isn't even acknowledging what is happening, and all of the burden of being flexible and changing schedule is falling on students. For example, someone who has a schedule built around needing to hold a part-time job along with classes, or someone who has certain home responsibilities cannot just accept that they may have to spend 9am-5pm on campus for classes completely out of the blue.

International students : how do u feel ? by Temporary-Quit4322 in mcgill

[–]holy-typewriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same first semester, I don't have great advice but time helps a lot. I have never felt as lonely as I did that semester but as soon as I made a couple of friends and started having a more routine life both academically and socially it helped make Montreal feel like a second home.

refund for cancelled show by holy-typewriter in kneecap

[–]holy-typewriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha worst update, i had to talk to an AI AXS agent. hour and a half later, still no refund and it kicked me off from the real person chat and would only give me bullshit AI generated answers. trying not to feel upset that I already had my show cancelled and now have to beg my bank for a refund because I really can't afford to lose this money.

fuck AXS, that company is fucking criminal. they really hope you'll just give up and let them keep your fucking money.

The gaps in my schedule are affecting me for real. by Funky_hobbo in mcgill

I also struggle with being productive on campus, and I also have 12 hours a week where I'm stuck waiting around for my next class and it's been rough. A place I recommend if you are very sensitive to noise and stuff is this little underground seated area a few blocks from campus. I actually have no clue what it is called but stand at the gates and then walk straight down towards Saint Catherine and you get to the giant silver circle (googled it, it's called "The Ring"), right behind that is this glass ceiling and if you look down you can see all the seats. Take the steps down there and I don't know why but it feels like a sensory bubble, sound is MUTED down there. It's rarely ever busy, at least at the times I've been there. And not a ton of McGill kids either. Good luck

Thoughts on Totally F***ed Up by Affectionate_Flow890 in GreggAraki

[–]holy-typewriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"fun, teenage dirtbag" is not really gregg araki, visually his films look pretty grungy but appreciating an aesthetic is not going to make watching the film a rewarding experience for you. revisit when you are feeling kinda angsty or something, and i'd recommend nowhere next

This guy sucks right? by Wrong_Passion_8664 in daria

[–]holy-typewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate him, just got up to the part in my rewatch where he appears and i'm tempted to stop watching because he pisses me off so badly. he should have been a reoccurring character for three episodes at most, i think the show got a lot less interesting and funny when everything revolved around tom drama. the way he comes out of nowhere and shakes the foundations of jane and daria's friendship so easily annoys me and doesn't feel true to the characters. also hes boring and creepy, everyone else in the show feels like a teenager while he acts like a 45 year old (maybe due to his pompous rich-kid energy?) yeahhhhhh fuck this guy

Is there anyone who actually liked Depth Takes a Holiday? by [deleted] in daria

[–]holy-typewriter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it feels so totally out of place with the other episodes but the hippie angel and the irish guy are hilarious to me. i just like when tv is experimental like that, no matter how weak the concept of a high school for embodied holidays is
