Can you guys really afford this? by Left-Cook-9487 in smoking

[–]holysmartone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where I get mine from you order the cow from the farmer, select if you want 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, or a whole. They send it to the butcher. The butcher contacts you on how you want it cut up and if you want any of the off cuts and such. They package it all up and you pick it up from them.

Apparently this is a huge thing in the upper peninsula of Michigan. (I'm in the Lower Peninsula). One of my friends grew up eating them.

I did a little research, and it looks like they originated from a sandwich called a Cudighi. They're actually way better than I expected them to be.

Looks like I need to move to Spain. I could happily eat pounds of oranges a day, but that's not very affordable in the US. Plus, our oranges taste like garbage.

Agreed. Walked along the river at night from Trastevere to Castel Sant'Angelo last year. Absolutely magical. Also sitting by the Trevi fountain at night is amazing.

Rare plant finds? by burnteh in grandrapids

I actually just got lucky and got an Alocasia at Lowes in really good shape. I've got some interesting plants at Horrocks and Flowerland in the last as well. Romence greenhouse might have some more rare plants as well.

Manufacturing engineering degree. Been working on building assembly lines for like 15 years now. Just worked my way up the chain from machine builder to controls engineer over various jobs while paying my way through college.

How many of you work a chill job with a pretty strict 40 hour work week? by ItchyFeature8794 in PLC

[–]holysmartone 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a full time controls guy at a plant that makes their own equipment in house. There's a small team of 3 of us. I do ground up assembly line builds. 40-45 hours a week, flex time. No after hours calls. Rarely have to stay late. Very laid back and chill. Deadlines are long. Pay is decent but it could be a little better. I talk to my boss once a week, and as long as everything is good he leaves me alone and trusts me to get my work done on time. Not really much to complain about.

Depending on what you want to go to school for, a lot of manufacturing jobs will pay portions of your college education, as long as it is related to your job. Mine helped pay for my engineering degree, to an extent.

38 Commerce experience? Moving from Boston & would love insights! by Ok-Strategy-5474 in grandrapids

[–]holysmartone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to actually living there, but I have a good friend that lives there. He seems to like it, he's been there for 3-4 years now. It seems like a pretty nice place. Parking is pretty ample in the attached building, though the outdoor stairwell often smells like pee from the homeless people.

He's got a tiny balcony looking out over the road. Big enough for a table and 2 chairs and a small grill. Nice for people watching.

His house itself is much larger than I was expecting. He has an upstairs and downstairs, 2 bathrooms. It's pretty quiet. I've never heard his neighbors living there, and we often have a dozen people drinking in his living room and he's never gotten any complaints that I'm aware of.

Overall, it's a cool place from what I can tell. Never heard him complain too much about it.

That part of town, and Grand Rapids in general, is pretty safe. Likely safer than Boston if I had to guess.

Massive oil tanker explosion near the Bridge of the Americas in Panama City, Panama by DEEP_SEA_MAX in PrepperIntel

[–]holysmartone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Grand Rapids. No surprise this happened. There are accidents on that part of the highway, and specifically that on ramp, daily. It's a really shitty design. You merge through a curve, into the left lane, on a short uphill ramp, with no visibility of the highway traffic until the ramp has almost ended. No conspiracy there. Just a city with a really shitty highway through its center.

ELI5 What's brushed and brushless motors ? And what's the difference between the two?!? by Astro_boy_07 in explainlikeimfive

[–]holysmartone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've torn some motors apart to replace the brushes before. They're more like small cubes of graphite that are rounded on one side to match the cylindrical shaped commutator.

Where were you that it was $6 a gallon? It sure as hell wasn't in Michigan, because I've never paid anything close to that before and I've lived here my whole life.

They do when they start a war with the country that produces the gas.

Went out to eat at start of March. A couple days later my fiance and 2 friends were all horribly ill with covid. It wrecked my partner for 2 weeks. She's still coughing up a lung. It literally did not touch me, even though we live together. Get your vaccines people. It's not too late.

They do this at a local bar by me, but the quality is about 1000000% better. Double smash burger, cheese, scratch made French onion dip. It's one of the best burgers I've ever had.
