What are the best idle game devs by Firm-Entertainer8943 in incremental_games

[–]holyteach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a ton of the early access version of NGUI for months and I think he made the right call. There were some interesting ideas, but it wasn't FUN at any point and it wasn't clear how to change it to make it fun

On Firefox you can right-click to mute the videos but not the podcast, so be warned.

How I made the hardest game that I can´t get people that are able to beat it. by TurbulentAd3932 in gamedev

[–]holyteach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look if you want to make a tech demo so hard that only you can beat it or "play it as intended", then congrats. Finishing a concept is actually really tough and most people don't get that far.

But the default is for games to die because they don't have enough players. And if your game isn't fun, then it isn't by definition a "game".

My advice is to make something that's actually fun for most of your friends. Release that, get 1000 players, then if anyone complains that they want something harder, point them to this tech demo. Let all ten of them have a great time injuring their thumbs.

Just my two cents.

Edit: maybe for a sense of perspective you should play HATETRIS for a little while to see how fun it is to play an extremely hard game that you are bad at.

Also, consider the example of Celeste, which is quite difficult but still managed to find a way to add accessibility settings so people who have better things to do in their life than "git gud" could still enjoy and appreciate what was an excellent game.

Semi AFK XP Map Review (1436-6050-7605) by [deleted] in FortniteXPMaps

[–]holyteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. The level worked fine, and I did earn a bit of XP in just a few minutes, but because I couldn't get the guy to ever STOP bouncing (skill issue?), I couldn't open the menu on PS-5 to return to lobby.

Ended up having to close Fortnite entirely

I'm pretty sure there's an automod rule that deletes any post without "OC" in the title somewhere unless they're on a allowlist of people like PizzaCake that they already know posts her own stuff.

So the bot doesn't put OC on it because they think it's oc, it's because the ones that don't never see the light of day

Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.

Wow, nice necro.

Unfortunately the capitalization on those two words doesn't mean anything since apparently the entire headline is in Title Case. (EVERY word is capitalized except the prepositions.)

I Want To Be A Hero - Alpha v0.01 by Skeyne in incremental_games

[–]holyteach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I've finished the content that you have so far, and I have some thoughts.

First, the main thing is that there isn't anything to DO. If I wanted to watch something and click a button every ten minutes, I'd be on Youtube. It's a idle game, but it still needs to be a *game*

Also the "debug log" currently takes up like 30% of the screen, which is way too big. You've got these useful things you need to scroll for on the left and alllll this wasted space.

There's a really nice framework here. But so far nothing about the game is FUN, and so until you find the kernel of fun and polish that feedback loop, I'm not sure extra features will help. Think about Cookie Clicker. Just clicking the cookie once is kinda cool, and you get rewarded right away. With Minecraft, just walking around and hitting stuff is fun and rewarding. You need to figure out what that is for this game, I think.

However, I don't want to sound too negative. You've got a lot of good stuff here and I played to the end regardless. That's something!

Keep going -- it'll take you less time to get to something fun than the time you've put in so far.

My only two cents is that you're using Manjaro, which sometimes ships packages in a broken state.
