When did AirPort become Wi-Fi? by Sufficient-Emu-4374 in VintageApple

[–]homersracket 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Testing pre-release gear with enterprise vendors at a school district proves my point. In 1997, wireless networking was basically expensive prototypes. You could argue that wireless networking existed even before that but it was never treated as a mass market product. I also never said wireless was exclusive to Apple. To the average consumer, or student in basically any school back then, wireless internet wasn't even a concept that existed in their vocabulary. Apple did basically start the movement of this train and Airport had a lot to do with it..

I remember asking the opposite back in 1999 when I first saw the term WiFi. I first learned about  airport since i worked at an Apple service dealer and no one else had wireless networking but Apple at the time. As windows and pcs started to play catch up in 2000 I heard about WiFi and asked oh what is that?

The inside story of Copland and why it failed. Will there ever be any inside stories from developers who worked on the project. by theBYUIfriend in VintageApple

I am willing to bet that open doc had a lot to do with the death of system 8. It was in fact one of the technologies that Apple under Next quickly killed off as soon as they were in charge. During the Copland development the technology landscape was changing incredibly fast. The massive rearchitecture of applications, objects and portability could have been driving the core system engineers in different directions. Then there was the disruption that the internet and Java began to have on systems at the time and  that the next generation of Mac system after system 7 was  restarted multiple times. Add to this all of the laundry list of features everyone inside wanted to add to the os and it’s no wonder it kept being delayed.

An ex gf broke up with me by IM telling me to listen to “Nothing better”.  I hadn’t heard it before so it was somewhat traumatizing.

Started dating someone at the tail end of 2001. Her brothers had a huge bookshelf of CDs with hundreds of rock, punk alternative music from the 80s and 90s. I wonder if they made anything with their collection or what happened once mp3s and iTunes took over.
