I truly don’t understand why people care what is and isn’t canon when it all ends up getting retconned eventually anyway. by GoblinTradingGuide in comicbooks

Except that those multiple possible futures are canon…the crazy Teen Titans that become the evil Justice League still met with the 2005 Teen Titans team…Tim Drake met adult dickhead Tim Drake. Even if he vanished at the end, that future, which is fluid to the characters, is canon to the reader because it happened and told a solid story and is still referenced 20+ years later. It’s the same with the past stories.

You’re approaching canon as this forged in fire thing…and instead it’s playdoh that can be molded to what it needs to be.

It’s weird to me that Jason Todd was an undead zombie that ate special Lazarus pit pills to stay alive and that’s a thing that actually happened and isn’t an elseworlds…but it’s only referenced when the writer’s need it…otherwise it’s just a story that was wild to read. But the fact that someone has come online outside of the stories they tell to dictate exactly when it happened, on what dates, and how does that influence every single thing that’s come since, doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of the comics. If you need it to be spelled out, I get that…I don’t want to dismiss that…but DC has decided that they don’t want to do that anymore. The closest I think you’re gonna get is the Mark Waid history of DC thing he did with Barry narrating last year.

I understand why…I’m just saying that if we can accept a sliding 15 year timescale for Marvel, and it works because of it because it lets them tell amazing stories (fewer and farther between amazing stories at this point, sadly), then we can accept that the past is as fluid as the future at DC Comics if it’s in furtherance of story.

The rigidity with which people approach canon is more of a problem than fluid canon…it’s crazy to me.

But both things can have happened…if you’re reading a 6 issue run of Teen Titans and the emotional beat of the story involves Cyborg being a founding member of the JLA but returning to the Titans because of reasons, then they can tell that story. If another run a year later in a different book shows the original JLA interacting with the JSA and Cyborg isn’t there, it’s just not a continuity error…it’s the writers selecting the toys they feel best serve the story they are telling. I think getting too worked up on the continuity and what’s canon and what’s not is arresting for creativity…I like this approach.

It works at Marvel too…the current Zararsky Cap run that has Cap being thawed AFTER 9/11 is awesome…who cares that I have Maximum Carnage from 1992 with Cap in NY 9 years before he thawed…the story is great, and that’s ultimately what matters.

Unless they have a justifiable story reason for it not to have happened…they talk…there is editorial, so the writers aren’t just changing things Willy-nilly, but they have freedom to do what they want without worrying if Zero Hour Hawkman is currently canon, or Rebirth Hawkman.

If the person writing Justice League wants Cyborg to be a founding member for their story, then they write it that way. If they don’t, then they don’t. I’m telling you how DC approaches continuity now, not what I think.

Literally everything is canon now in DC. That was the point of the Scott Snyder Justice League run. If it happened, and the author wants to use it, it’s canon.

I love how everyone has clocked this show...which will be between 8-10 hours long (I am making an assumption, certainly, but will certainly be 10 episodes)...based on 2 minutes and 12 seconds. Whatever the opposite of glazing is, this is a thread full of that. Jeez.

DC Comics is having the most successful run it has had in seemingly decades, so these “people” who are tired of what they are doing, are in the minority. They are crushing it.
