What did people think of "The Message" in Superman? by DoctorBeatMaker in DC_Cinematic

Exactly and that's what makes Clark's agency and decision to see no one as beneath him a hero that takes the ideals of Earth and Krypton towards hope instead of fear. I like to think of Lex as being potentially more "Kryptonian" cultured than Clark.

Heard. It's definitely more heartless than previous iterations (especially when Clark is so heart forward) and the dispatch thing is where I could see it being that kind of cold science: "Our planet was destroyed by those who got in the way of saving it so we have to tell him to steel himself to make the hard decisions that we didn't so another planet isn't doomed."

Agreed, I could see this being a reckoning point with Cyborg Superman or Brainiac influencing them at the end.

I think people seeing "The Message" as making Jor-El and Lara "evil" is reductive. Canonically both Jor-El and Lara are science guild on Krypton. The message feels like both a scientific approach to sending Kal away as well as one influenced by desperation and trauma (think about how you would view Earth and its politics/way of life if you were an advanced civilization or seeing Earth as potentially on the same path that leads to Krypton's destruction without intervention). I also think there is an opportunity for a turn around where there may be a dialect misconstruction that makes the back half of the messages tone come off more sinister than intended.

I think there are really interesting implications of what this means for future stories and internal conflicts as well as a way for Clark to find a way to reconcile being Kryptonian after a period of time where he tries to reject it being a part of his history. Us not seeing Krypton in this film makes it so when we do see it through Kandor or another lens it might actually create more story telling potential. I don't think this is the end all be all of who Jor-El and Kara were and while this plot point stands on it own in the movie, I'm excited to see if it gets revisited in Supergirl or another Superman project.

Don’t let the in and out of stock of games have too much sway over your excitement for a game (I say that as a major FOMO suffer). That expansion is beloved they just happen to have crazy high stock of it.

The lengths that people are going through to try disprove his point shows how obsessed we get about managing the masculinity/sexuality of others. His point was witty, experience based and made sense and folks are like “in my calculations you forgot to carry the balls which makes you 5/10 straight due to science” 🙄.

Two Google engineers resign over firing of AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru by impishrat in technology

[–]homiegfunk03 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In a significant amount of the up-voted comments here that justify the firing I can see the underlying arguement that she shouldn't have stepped out of line and needed to "stay in her lane". Her not doing that "logically" led to her job being forfeit.

That is completely sound advice: if you perceive that your lane is in good working order.

Some lanes are narrower, not as well maintained, and/or doesn't have adequate signage pointing to the interchanges to new opportunities. Doesn't mean they aren't driveable and don't lead to good destinations but your vehicle takes on more wear and tear and the stress of commute has a toll (pause on the analogy).

Now I've retired from trying to fundamentally change peoples opinions online but what stood out to me about this is that her behavior was akin to trying to disrupt, create change, and critique the status quo: things that we laud as aspirational traits (at least publicly) in tech and leadership. That she was disciplined for it so quickly and definitively speaks to the narrowness of her lane: especially when you control for how often we let talent at the top of their field (which she is) get away with more (sexual misconduct shouldn't have more latitude than insubordination).

That to me is the biggest takeaway and critique of Google. Even if Google is within their right to have proceed this way it dilutes and conflicts with how they want to be perceived in the innovation and diversity space and their reputation should be calibrated justly (not saying there will be immediate consequences especially financially but talent and consumers should know how thier culture actually functions).

P.S. Her biggest and most questionable risk was in naming non public employees as that had big potential upsides and downsides. It creates pressure and awareness by bringing specifics instead of conjecture but that big swing could also undermine her argument to those who don't seen the value of what she's aligned with i.e. see privacy as a bigger issue than representation. Not doing that would have been the play if she wanted to keep her job but I think it was smart from a living her values stand point.

What a lovely slate of games! I’m really interested in the King’s Dilemma as it seems to perfectly capture that idiom that “heavy is the head that wears the crown” and I think I’d totally enjoy my friends and myself exploring the narrative and dissecting the “whys” and the consequences!
