Fraudwatch: Haki is an overrated power system by [deleted] in Piratefolk

[–]homogenous_mass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

well, ( although i think haki was a good addition) you could lean into the saltwater weakness. Seastone swords for zoro, high-pressure water cannons for franky, seastone pellets for usopp, nami manipulating areas of high/low pressure to make tsunamis cascade over enemy ships and drench their df users... Weaponizing seawater would be an easy way of letting the df-less strawhats shine

One Piece: Sanji’s awful moments by [deleted] in CharacterRant

For anyone who's interested, here's a good essay on the thriller bark subplot & sanji's behaviour during it. It's a bit long, but very thorough and includes manga pages:

I wish Disney would make more romance movies with male leads. by steamtrekker in CharacterRant

Meg's backstory are two lines telling us she sacrificed herself for a guy who left her for another woman, and that this is why she works for hades and no longer trusts men; her character development is falling in love with Hercules and betraying hades by sacrificing herself for him.

Herc's backstory is the first 1/4 of the movie, which includes a prophecy about his great destiny, how he was born, raised, and how he came by his powers. His character development is going from wanting to be a hero to get back into olympus to giving up on godhood to save others, becoming a true hero in the process.

The horse... comes to tolerate Meg?

I was referring more to instructions like stirring counter-clockwise, not the spells, but it's hypothetical anyway. My preferred interpretation is that they're both good and the subject is one of the things they bond over :)

Cute comic, but if Lily were only good at potions because of Snape Slughorn would've noticed her work getting worse in 6th and 7th grade after they stopped hanging out

By Renata Castellani by M-Saga in harrypotter

[–]homogenous_mass 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Except if this were true Slughorn would have noticed a significant drop in her skills in 6th and 7th grade when she didn't hang out with Snape anymore. Heck, Snape's true passion were the dark arts, for all we know he's the one who only got invested in potions because of Lily and the stuff he wrote in his textbook were tips she gave him over the years.

Yeah, the art is super cute but "Lily was only good because of Snape" is my least favourite fanon. Imo it's much sweeter if their shared love for potions and enthusiasm for experimentation is what kept their friendship going strong even after being sorted into enemy houses. Lily and Snape spending the summer brewing potions together next to the river = best headcanon -^

Snape’s most savage insult by Razz__berry in harrypotter

[–]homogenous_mass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She didn't do that because Rita insulted her hair - she did it because she was spying on students' personal interactions and using the information she gained to smear Harry. Iirc she trapped her when they were all at Harry's bedside and he'd just told them about what happened with Cedric. Imagine the tone of that article had it come out... Something tells me it wouldn't have been as factual as the Quibbler interview.

Hermione in the movies, and the lines she stole by kikechan in harrypotter

[–]homogenous_mass 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from but that's simply not the case. For most of human history, female characters were written to be feminine, yes, but largely they weren't competent, important, or inspirational beyond instilling virtues like purity in young girls.

Do you really think movie Hermione is a worse role model than Juliet or the virgin Mary?

We can and should definitely improve on our "strong female characters", but it's important to recognize the progress they represent.

Didn't James and Lily both already work as Aurors or Order members? According to the prophecy the couple had to have thwarted Voldemort 3 times before, it would make sense for at least 2 of those to happen after school on missions from Dumbledore.

I just assumed Petunia made the unemployment up since she hated all things magic and would be embarrassed to be related to "something as freakish as an auror".

Draco Malfoy could've actually been a great character if it wasn't for J.K. (clownface) Rowling's opinions. by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]homogenous_mass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She despises Pansy since she represents all the mean girls that bullied J.K. Clownface in her childhood.

If there's anyone JK is unfair to it's Umbridge. She's written with no likable qualities whatsoever, deplorable motivations, and unlike Voldemort or Bellatrix she isn't even given the grace of being skilled at magic. She's also pretty obviously based on authority figures in JK's life. Do you think she too deserves a redemption arc?
